Relationship between visual display terminal working hours and headache/eyestrain in Korean wage workers during the COVID-19 pandemic: the sixth Korean Working Conditions Survey

  • Background: Prolonged use of visual display terminal (VDT) can cause eyestrain, dry eyes, blurred vision, double vision, headache and musculoskeletal symptoms (neck, shoulder, and wrist pain). VDT working hours among workers have greatly increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between VDT working hours and headache/eyestrain in wage workers using data from the sixth Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) (2020-2021) conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We analyzed the sixth KWCS data of 28,442 wage workers aged 15 years or older. The headache/eyestrain that occurred in the last year was assessed. The VDT work group included workers who use VDT always, almost always, and three-fourth of the working hours, while the non-VDT work group included workers who use VDT half of the working hours, one-fourth of the working hours, almost never, and never. To analyze the relationship between VDT working hours and headache/eyestrain, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using logistic regression analysis. Results: Among the non-VDT work group, 14.4% workers experienced headache/eyestrain, whereas 27.5% workers of the VDT work group experienced these symptoms. For headache/eyestrain, the VDT work group showed adjusted OR of 1.94 (95% CI: 1.80-2.09), compared with the non-VDT work group, and the group that always used VDT showed adjusted OR of 2.54 (95% CI: 2.26-2.86), compared with the group that never used VDT. Conclusions: This study suggests that during the COVID-19 pandemic, as VDT working hours increased, the risk of headache/eyestrain increased for Korean wage workers.

  • This study aims at determining what affects lighting environment of a kitchen in a Japanese restaurant in a hotel and at analyzing. cooks' perception during cooking and appropriate lighting they consider to be important in each working area. For this purpose, 196 cooks working in Japanese restaurants in first-class hotels participated in a survey. After analyzing the results, cooks attach importance to illumination during cooking, and the more inappropriate luminosity is in each working area, the lower appropriateness of luminosity recognized by cooks is. And there is strong correlation between lighting environment items and illumination in each working area. The results suggest that cooks working in a Japanese restaurant in a hotel should be provided with good lighting environment appropriate for each working area. On this ground, it is expected that cooks will see their health and productivity improving.

취업주부가계와 전업주부가계간 소비지출패턴 비교 (A Comparison of Consumption Expenditure Patterns between working-wife families and nonworking-wife families)

  • This study examines difference in expenditure patterns between working-wife families and nonworking-wife families. The data used in the study is 4,506 husband-wife families take National Survey of family Income and Expenditure in 1996. Of the sample, 42.3% are working-wife families. Consumption expenditure patterns are analyzed in two ways. One is the budget share of each given expenditure and the other is elasticity of those expenditure. The main results of this study are as follows: First, there are the differences between working-wife families and nonworking-wife families in the budget share of each given expenditure. In the budget shares of each given expenditure, nonworking-wife families share more than working wife families for food and medicine. And working-wife families allocated more on public transportation than their counterparts. Second, there are also differences between working-wife families and nonworking-wife families in income elasticities.

  • The purpose of this study was to present the thermal characteristics of the working uniform exposed to the radiation heat. The effect of exposure time and exposure distance on the changes and the relationship between physical properties were investigated experimentally. Regardless of the kind of working uniform, the surface temperature of the working uniform with exposed time sharply increases as exposed distance is more close and the reaching time of steady state is shorter. The surface temperature of working uniform exponentially decreases as exposed distance become more distant. For the safety of the working man, it is necessary that he work far away at a fixed standard distance from the radiant heat source.

근로시간 단축이 여성근로자의 피로도에 미치는 영향 (A Study on the Effects of the Reduction of Working Hours on Female Workers' Fatigue)

  • Purpose: This present study has been conducted on female workers' shorter working hours in order to look into their fatigue level and the correlation between fatigue and working hours. Method: We surveyed 237 respondents using a questionnaire from June 1st to June 20th, 2005. Results: The means of total fatigue complaint was 3.45. The fatigue level was significantly higher in the lower age group, unmarried group, manager group and shorter working duration group. And the fatigue level was significantly correlated to working hours and work intensity. In the results of stepwise multiple regression, factors affecting the fatigue level were the change of work intensity, age, regular diet habit, working hours and the type of occupation. Conclusion: It is necessary to prepare the health promotion programs, which can reduce female workers' fatigue level and relieve the intensity of their works.

  • Office interior design is based on the understanding of diversity information about working program, organization and networking system of the company. To build a good working environment, flexibility of space and communication between employees and employer in the office are very important. Due to the business growth, the "N" company requires more working space and this project is basically initiated to relocate in new working environment. This work pursues the clients can enhance more creativity and productivity in their working area. In order to promote the efficiency and comfort of the working environment, diverse employee's working characteristic, individual and collective requirements have been observed. The basic concept of the design can be summarized in the following : youth, simplicity, modern and nature.

  • The organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) uses a kind of refrigerant as a working fluid that evaporates at relatively low temperature, as the Rankine Cycle uses superheated steam as the working fluid. A small scale ORC test bench was installed, and two different working fluids (R245fa and R134a) were injected into the test bench. The test bench was in operation with the two different working fluids under the same conditions. The effects against the system performance from the different working fluids were analysed, and root causes were identified. Other factors reflecting the power generation efficiency were also found. A conclusion was drawn, that R245fa makes the system perform better, than R134a.

취업주부의 역할갈등과 취업중단의사 관련 변수에 대한 연구 (An Analysis of the Factors Related to the Degree of the Role Conflict and the Likelihood of Exits of the Labor Force of Working Wives)

  • The purposes of this study are to identify the factors associated with the degree of role conflict and the likelihood of exits of the labor force of working wives and to investigate the relationship between the role conflict and job quitting behavior of working wives. The major results of this study are as follows. First, the ratio of reservation wage relative to wife's earnings, wife's earnings, husband's behavioral support, the presence of child under age of 6, the type of occupation, and job satisfaction are associated with the role conflict of working wives. Second, there is a significant difference in the job quitting behavior of working wives according to the degree of role conflict of working wives. Third, the level of role conflict, educational level, the ratio of resonation wage relative to wife's earnings, husband's behavioral support, the presence of child under age of 6, the type of occupation, and job satisfaction are associated with the likelihood of job quitting of working wives.

전문직과 비전문직 취업모의 역할긴장에 대한 대처행동 비교 연구 (Role Strain Coping Behaviors of Professional and non-professional Working Mothers)

  • The differences of coping behaviors of professional and non-professional working mothers were assessed using data(n=704) from the working mothers with children under age 18. Professional working mothers' individual characters family and occupational conditions are more suitable than non-professionals for the coping behaviors. And such individual and situational aspects may relate to the differences of coping behaviors of he two groups. In general professional working mothers use coping behaviors more except the 'role reducation' and 'taking the support of fiends & neighbor' On the other hand the conservativeness and passive attitude in role strain coping is the same aspect of the two groups. Finally the relation of individual character family and occupational condition of working mothers to their coping behavios are slightly different in this two working mothers groups.

저온용(低溫用) 히이트파이프의 작동유체(作動流體)에 관한 연구(硏究) (A Study of various Working Fluid in the Low Temperature Heat Pipe)

  • The study on the characteristics of heat transfer by various working fluid and wick structure is an important subject in order to design low temperature heat pipe. The purpose of this research was to study the heat transfer characteristics of heat pipe according to various working fluid and wick thickness by ADI method and experimental results. As the results the heat transfer by various working fluid could improve by good heat conductivity of fluid and small ratio t/k. The working fluid could be selected in close vicinity to boiling temperature among fluid properties the value of ratio little influenced heat transfer of heat pipe. In case of distilled water, the response of the effect in heat recovery was more rapidly showed than response of other working fluid. The maximum heat flux increased in proportion to the characteristics of working fluid but the pore and wick permeability among wick characteristic was little effect in the wetting state.
