  • As the use of information technology continues to bring a dramatic increase in the amount of data available to managers, researchers have noted that having too much data can be as much of a problem as having too little. It becomes very important to understand the effects of "information explosion" on the way managers perform their work. This study examines the effect of the amount of available data on the process and outcome of thinking within a context where managers are equipped with computing tools. The purpose of this study is to better understand how managers respond cognitively to increased information availability. In this experiment with 104 MBAs three groups of subjects were asked to identify high and low potential market categories for effective direct mail sales based on three different amount of computer-based socioeconomic data designed based on existing research on cognition and information overload. Analyses of the outcomes showed that the group with medium amount of data used data and computer-based analysis tools most effectively and efficiently. We expect that the study will provide us a base to relate future MIS research to theories on cognition in such related fields as psychology and organizational behavior.

  • A 50kW-4000rpm interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) applied to the high-performance electric vehicle (EV) is introduced in this paper. The main work of this paper is that a 2-D T-type lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) model is presented for IPMSM temperature rise calculation. Thermal conductance matrix equation is generated based on calculated thermal resistance and loss. Thus the temperature of each node is obtained by solving thermal conductance matrix. Then a 3-D liquid-solid coupling model is built to compare with the 2-D T-type LPTN model. Finally, an experimental platform is established to verify the above-mentioned methods, which obtains the measured efficiency map and current wave at rated load case and overload case. Thermocouple PTC100 is used to measure the temperature of the stator winding and iron core, and the FLUKE infrared-thermal-imager is applied to measure the surface temperature of IPMSM and controller. Test results show that the 2-D T-type LPTN model have a high accuracy to predict each part temperature.

  • This study was undertaken in order to examine the effect of hardiness on stress-causing factors, defined in this study as burnout in nursing. The subjects were 248 nurses working in three general hospitals in Taejon. The instruments used for this study were a survey of general characteristics, modified Health-Related Hardiness Scale(HRHS) (25 items), job stress scale (63 items), and burnout scale (20 items). Analysis of data was done through the mean, percentage, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression done with a SAS program. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The average item score for the job stress was high at 4.44. In the subcategories, the highest degree of stress was night duty(5.11), and work overload(4.70), responsibility for extra affairs(4.70), conflict in nurse-doctor relationships(4.69), and low reward(4.63) in that order. 2) In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, hardiness(11.55%) was a significant determinant of burnout along with job stress(17.24%) and job duration(12.94%). The results of this study show that hardiness has an effect on psychological distress caused by stress.

  • The aim of this survey is to investigate the occupational musculoskeletal disease and stress levels of restaurant cooks and to provide a basic data of programs in order to prevent occupational diseases. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 220 subjects in Gangwon province. The results show that there was no significant difference in the degree of occupational musculoskeletal disease between male cooks and female cooks. However, western cuisine cooks were more likely to have a higher degree of occupational musculoskeletal disease than other cuisine cooks and showed a higher degree of occupational stress from work overload as well as irregular meal stresses. Cooks aged from 30 to 40 years showed a higher level of occupational musculoskeletal disease in the neck, shoulder, and hand/wrist compared to those in other age groups. The job tenure was related to the degree of musculoskeletal disease in knee. Additionally, the hours of working per day were statistically significantly related to musculoskeletal disease in the knee and to the occupational stress levels in irregular meals stress. The findings of this study suggest that it is essential to design customized education for cooks to lessen their occupational musculoskeletal diseases and stresses in order to ensure the health and safety of the culinary workers.

  • In this paper, we propose a new monitor for collecting job information from Hadoop clusters in real time. This monitor is made of two programs called Collector and Agent. Agent collects Hadoop cluster's node information and job information, and Collector analyzes the collected information and saves it in a database. Also, Collector was placed in a new node outside the Hadoop cluster so that it does not affect Hadoop's work and will not cause overload. When the proposed monitor was implemented and applied, the testbed cluster was able to detect the occurrence of dead nodes immediately. In addition, we were able to find Hadoop jobs which were inefficient and when we modified such jobs to further enhance the performance of Hadoop.

  • Purpose: To investigate the perception and barriers of Kangaroo-Mother Care (KMC) among nurses in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Methods: Participants were 131 nurses working in NICU who completed self-report questionnaires which included information regarding perception, barriers, and practice of KMC. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: Of the participants, 33.6% reported the practice of KMC in their NICU, with 75.6% wanting to receive training in KMC and 31.3% having received KMC education. Most of the participants agreed that KMC enhances attachment, parental confidence, and effective breast feeding but they reported a negative perception in providing KMC for premature infants weighing less than 1000 grams or intubated premature infants. Major barriers to practicing KMC were safety of infants, possible work overload for nurses, as well as absence of consistent guidelines. Barriers to KMC among nurses who received the KMC training were lower than nurses who did not receive the KMC training (t=-2.11, p=.037). Conclusion: Education program and standardized clinical practice protocol should be developed to foster the positive perception and to reduce nurse barriers to KMC.

  • The sympathico-adrenergic system and the hypophyseal-adrenocortical system mediates the regulation of the internal milieu. And the kidneys regulate both water and electrolyte balance of the body fluid. The kidneys are the sites of production of renin which participate indirectly in maintaining renin. angiotensin-aldosterone system. These system de-serve special attention in the context of adjustment the effects on the body function. And so, maximal exercise and work load are associated with home-osthetic function. The nurses working in the hospital have been complained of fatigue and stress by frequent duty changes and overload. In order to define this, the possible changes of hormonal excretion during three-shift nursing practice were investigated. Urine samples were collected at pre-duty and post-duty, and were measured with chemical assay and radioimmunoassay in 30 nursing students, in nursing practice and 43 nursing students, in studying. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In nursing practice, urinary norepinephrine concentration showed a marked increase during day duty, urinary cortisol concentration showed a marked increase during evening duty, and urinary renin concentration was increased in night duty, 2. Corrected ratio of urinary sodium excreted by the urinary excretion of creatinin (UNa/UCr) and UCl/UCr showed a marked decrease during night duty. Nursing practice did not affect on the UK/UCr and urinary concentrating ability. From these results, it is suggested that further studies the define the effects on some physiological function of the three-shift nursing practice against circadian rhythm are needed for better working condition of nurses.
