  • Smart work is an alternative form to enable seamless business collaboration without time and space limitations using ICT. However, smart work implementation has not produced tangible achievements and sometimes has resulted in failure. This study examined users' resistance against smart work, which is regarded as one of the most important elements for the successful implementation of smart work. The study classified elements which cause users' resistance into the work's innovative characteristics and the user characteristics based on the model of innovation resistance. It also set the degree of freedom in spatial and temporal dimension as moderating factors. This empirical research results showed that low work efficiency, unfavorable evaluation methods, and high degree of satisfaction in the way of working affected smart work users' resistance. In addition, temporal freedom had a moderating effect on the relationship between users' characteristics and their resistance. On the contrary, spatial freedom affected the relationship between their works' innovative characteristics and their resistance. The study results suggest that organizations need to set up business processes and evaluation methods first to adopt Smart work successfully.

  • This study aims to empirically analyze the effects of the learning organization characteristics in public libraries on the innovative work behavior of librarians. In this analysis, 113 librarians from 15 public libraries in the Seoul Metropolitan Area of South Korea were surveyed to investigate the learning organization characteristics of libraries and innovative work behavior. Through a multiple regression analysis of learning organization characteristics and innovative work behavior, it was found that, among the sub-factors of learning organization characteristics, creating continuous learning opportunities and creating systems to capture and share learning had a positive effect on idea realization among the sub-factors of innovative work behavior. From this, it was interpreted that public libraries should increase financial and non-financial support for librarians to learn and also that libraries should create various systems such as electronic bulletin boards and meetings in which librarians can share their learning. Moreover, the sub-factors of learning organization characteristics were found to have no effect on idea generation and idea promotion among the sub-factors of innovative work behavior, which indicated that it will be necessary to identify the organization characteristics that affect idea generation and idea promotion. This study is significant in that it identified the sub-factors of learning organization characteristics that promote the innovative work behavior of public library librarians.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify moderating effects of work-family conflict in the relationship between job, organizational, career characteristics and turnover intention among nurses working in small and medium-sized hospitals. Methods: A self report questionnaire survey was completed by 286 nurses working in five small or medium-sized hospitals in P city. Data were gathered during October, 2014 and analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: Work-family conflict had significant moderating effects between job, organizational, career characteristics and turnover intention of nurses working in small or medium-sized hospitals. Career commitment was the biggest factor in reducing turnover intention. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that work-family conflict and career commitment are important factors in turnover intention among nurses working in small and medium-sized hospitals. Therefore, to understand job and organizational career characteristics of nurses in small and medium hospitals, consideration must be given to the role of conflict in the nurses' workplace and homes. Support from the organization focusing on career development, and provision of an innovative system for the environment of small hospitals are needed.

  • Work-related low back pain is one of the major factors that cause the loss of working power especially in actively working age, therefore controlling the work-related low back pain is one of the major issues in the field of industrial safety and health. This study was performed for detecting the risk factors and proposing the efficient control program of the work-related low back pain. The subjects were male workers employed at the manufacturing industry in Pusan with longer than 6 months' working duration. The data was collected by self-reported questionnaire and interview from May 1 to October 31,1992. The contents of questionnaire were as follows:. the experience of low back pain within the recent one month, general characteristics(age, marital status, education level, religion, regular exercise), physical characteristics(height, weight), employment status(working duration, daily working hours, rest during work, satis(action fur the job), type of work and working environments(posture, forward bending, lifting and movement, satisfaction for table and chair). The result was analyzed for 608 entire respondents by case-control comparative method. The number of cases was 152 with a history of work-related low back pain, so the relative frequency of self-reported work-related low back pain was 25.0%, and the number of controls was 344 without any history of low back pain. As a result, two characteristics of the employment status(working duration, satisfaction fur the job) and all characteristics of type of work and working environments showed a statistical significance between the case and control groups(p<0.01). The Oddb ratios of these variables for Work-related low back pain were calculated. They were 7.88 for the satisfaction fur chair, 7.86 for lifting and movement,3.31 for satisfaction for table, and 2.22 fur bending forward(p<0.01). And for the multivariate logistic regression analysis confirmed that unsatisfaction for table was independent risk factor for Work-related low back pain. In summary, though this study was based upon the self-reported questionnaire and the subjective complaints, the satisfaction for chair, lifting and movement, satisfaction for table, and bending forward concerned with the type of work and working environments were considered as the main factors causing the work-related low back pain, and the work-related low back pain may be preventable by the ergonomic control of these factors.

  • Although many research efforts have been conducted to address the effect of crew members' work skills (e.g., technical and planning skills) on work performance (e.g., work duration and quality) in construction projects, the relationship between skill and performance has generated a great deal of controversy in the field of management (Inkpen and Crossan 1995). This controversy can lead to under- or over-estimations of the overall project schedule, and can make it difficult for project managers to implement appropriate managerial policies for enhancing project performance. To address this issue, the following aspects need to be considered: (a) work performances are determined not only by individual-level work skill but also by the group-level work skill affected by work team members, each member's role, and any working behavior pattern; (b) work planning has significant effects on to what extent work skill enhances performance; and (c) different types of activities in construction require different types of work, skill, and team composition. This research, therefore, develops a system dynamics (SD) model to analyze the effects of both individual-and group-level (i.e., multi-level) skill on performances by utilizing the advantages of SD in capturing a feedback process and state changes, especially in human factors (e.g., attitude, ability, and behavior). The model incorporates: (a) a multi-level skill evolution and relevant behavior development mechanism within a work group; (b) the interaction among work planning, a crew's skill-learning, skill manifestation, and performances; and (c) the different work characteristics of each activity. This model can be utilized to implement appropriate work planning (e.g., work scope and work schedule) and crew management policies (e.g., work team composition and decision of each worker's role) with an awareness of crew's skill and work performance. Understanding the different characteristics of each activity can also support project managers in applying strategic work planning and crew management for a corresponding activity, which may enhance each activity's performance, as well as the overall project performance.

  • This study evaluated the characteristics and sensibility of work clothes materials developed that took into account the work environment of major industrial settings, for which a selection was made according to spring/autumn use and winter use. The physical properties of the existing and test weaving of the work clothes materials were compared after the test weaving of work clothes materials through material design, which altered the yarn count, composition, weave and density of material. To evaluate sensibility of work clothes materials subjectively, seven ranks' semantic differential scale questions were developed with polar adjective pairs. The test weaving of work clothes materials showed improved performance (such as tensile strength, dimensional change, water vapor permeability, and color fastness) compared to the existing materials. The common factor analysis indicated that the explanatory power of the cumulative variance for the spring/autumn use and winter use was 71.19% and 69.53%, respectively.
