  • A Word is the smallest unit for text analysis, and the premise behind most text-mining algorithms is that the words in given documents can be perfectly recognized. However, the newly coined words, spelling and spacing errors, and domain adaptation problems make it difficult to recognize words correctly. To make matters worse, obtaining a sufficient amount of training data that can be used in any situation is not only unrealistic but also inefficient. Therefore, an automatical word extraction method which does not require a training process is desperately needed. WordRank, the most widely used unsupervised word extraction algorithm for Chinese and Japanese, shows a poor word extraction performance in Korean due to different language structures. In this paper, we first discuss why WordRank has a poor performance in Korean, and propose a customized WordRank algorithm for Korean, named KR-WordRank, by considering its linguistic characteristics and by improving the robustness to noise in text documents. Experiment results show that the performance of KR-WordRank is significantly better than that of the original WordRank in Korean. In addition, it is found that not only can our proposed algorithm extract proper words but also identify candidate keywords for an effective document summarization.

  • This study designed and implemented a system to extract of vowel from a word. The system is comprised of a voice feature extraction module and a neutral network module. The voice feature extraction module use a LPC(Linear Prediction Coefficient) model to extract a voice feature from a word. The neutral network module is comprised of a learning module and voice recognition module. The learning module sets up a learning pattern and builds up a neutral network to learn. Using the information of a learned neutral network, a voice recognition module extracts a vowel from a word. A neutral network was made to learn selected vowels(a, eo, o, e, i) to test the performance of a implemented vowel extraction recognition machine. Through this experiment, could confirm that speech recognition module extract of vowel from 4 words.

  • Web-scale open information extraction (Open IE) plays an important role in NLP tasks like acquiring common-sense knowledge, learning selectional preferences and automatic text understanding. A large number of Open IE approaches have been proposed in the last decade, and the majority of these approaches are based on supervised learning or dependency parsing. In this paper, we present a novel method for web scale open information extraction, which employs cosine distance based on Google word vector as the confidence score of the extraction. The proposed method is a purely unsupervised learning algorithm without requiring any hand-labeled training data or dependency parse features. We also present the mathematically rigorous proof for the new method with Bayes Inference and Artificial Neural Network theory. It turns out that the proposed algorithm is equivalent to Maximum Likelihood Estimation of the joint probability distribution over the elements of the candidate extraction. The proof itself also theoretically suggests a typical usage of word vector for other NLP tasks. Experiments show that the distance-based method leads to further improvements over the newly presented Open IE systems on three benchmark datasets, in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Given a document, keyphrase extraction is to automatically extract words or phrases which topically represent the content of the document. In unsupervised keyphrase extraction approaches, candidate words or phrases are first extracted from the input document, and scores are calculated for keyphrase candidates, and final keyphrases are selected based on the scores. Regarding the computation of the scores of candidates in unsupervised keyphrase extraction, this study proposes a method of adjusting the scores of keyphrase candidates according to the types of keyphrase candidates: word-type or phrase-type. For this, type-token ratios of word-type and phrase-type candidates as well as information content of high-frequency word-type and phrase-type candidates are collected from the input document, and those values are employed in adjusting the scores of keyphrase candidates. In experiments using four keyphrase extraction evaluation datasets which were constructed for full-text articles in English, the proposed method performed better than a baseline method and comparison methods in three datasets.

  • The previous studies to extract features for document through word association have the problems of updating profiles periodically, dealing with noun phrases, and calculating the probability for indices. We propose more effective feature extraction method which is using association word mining. The association word mining method, by using Apriori algorithm, represents a feature for document as not single words but association-word-vectors. Association words extracted from document by Apriori algorithm depend on confidence, support, and the number of composed words. This paper proposes an effective method to determine confidence, support, and the number of words composing association words. Since the feature extraction method using association word mining does not use the profile, it need not update the profile, and automatically generates noun phrase by using confidence and support at Apriori algorithm without calculating the probability for index. We apply the proposed method to document classification using Naive Bayes classifier, and compare it with methods of information gain and TFㆍIDF. Besides, we compare the method proposed in this paper with document classification methods using index association and word association based on the model of probability, respectively.

  • Objectives : We aim to assist in choosing an appropriate method for word extraction when analyzing East Asian Traditional Medical texts based on unsupervised learning. Methods : In order to assign ranks to substrings, we conducted a test using one method(BE:Branching Entropy) for exterior boundary value, three methods(CS:cohesion score, TS:t-score, SL:simple-ll) for interior boundary value, and six methods(BExSL, BExTS, BExCS, CSxTS, CSxSL, TSxSL) from combining them. Results : When Miss Rate(MR) was used as the criterion, the error was minimal when the TS and SL were used together, while the error was maximum when CS was used alone. When number of segmented texts was applied as weight value, the results were the best in the case of SL, and the worst in the case of BE alone. Conclusions : Unsupervised-Learning-Based Word Extraction is a method that can be used to analyze texts without a prepared set of vocabulary data. When using this method, SL or the combination of SL and TS could be considered primarily.

  • Most of online bookstores are providing a user with the bibliographic book information rather than the concrete information such as thematic words and atmosphere. Especially, thematic words help a user to understand books and cast a wide net. In this paper, we propose an efficient extraction method of thematic words from book text by applying the compound noun and noun phrase synthetic method. The compound nouns represent the characteristics of a book in more detail than single nouns. The proposed method extracts the thematic word from book text by recognizing two types of noun phrases, such as a single noun and a compound noun combined with single nouns. The recognized single nouns, compound nouns, and noun phrases are calculated through TF-IDF weights and extracted as main words. In addition, this paper suggests a method to calculate the frequency of subject, object, and other roles separately, not just the sum of the frequencies of all nouns in the TF-IDF calculation method. Experiments is carried out in the field of economic management, and thematic word extraction verification is conducted through survey and book search. Thus, 9 out of the 10 experimental results used in this study indicate that the thematic word extracted by the proposed method is more effective in understanding the content. Also, it is confirmed that the thematic word extracted by the proposed method has a better book search result.

  • In this paper, we describe an algorithm for transliterated foreign word extraction in Korean language. In the proposed method we reformulate the transliterated foreign word extraction problem as a syllable-tagging problem such that each syllable is tagged with a transliterated foreign syllable tag or a pure Korean syllable tag. Syllable sequences of Korean strings ale modeled by Hidden Markov Model whose state represents a character with binary marking to indicate whether the character forms a Korean word or not. The proposed method extracts a transliterated foreign word with high recall rate and precision rate. Moreover, our method shows good performance even with small-sized training corpora.

  • The study of literary texts is one of the earliest disciplines practiced around the globe. Poetry is artistic writing in which words are carefully chosen and arranged for their meaning, sound, and rhythm. Poetry usually has a broad and profound sense that makes it difficult to be interpreted even by humans. The essence of poetry is Rasa, which signifies mood or emotion. In this paper, we propose a poetry classification-based approach to automatically extract similar poems from a repository. Specifically, we perform a novel Rasa-based classification of Hindi poetry. For the task, we primarily used lexical features in a bag-of-words model trained using the support vector machine classifier. In the model, we employed Hindi WordNet, Latent Semantic Indexing, and Word2Vec-based neural word embedding. To extract the rich feature vectors, we prepared a repository containing 37 717 poems collected from various sources. We evaluated the performance of the system on a manually constructed dataset containing 945 Hindi poems. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed model attained satisfactory performance.
