The Effect of Indoor Wood Environment on Depression and Anxiety (실내 목재환경이 우울 및 불안에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : Creating a psychologically stable indoor environment is a significant factor in modern life. This study was conducted to confirm which type of wood interior decorating environment was beneficial for improving depression and anxiety. Methods : A total of 59 participants will randomly assign to each accommodation by dividing the rest of the three setting with the same structure with 0% wood interior decorating environment, 45% wood environment, and 90% wood environment. The Psychological evaluation measured at three time points, was before exposure to the wood environment (T1), 45 minutes after exposure to the wood environment (T2), and 20 hours after exposure to the wood environment (T3). Results : As a result of examining the effect of the wood interior use ratio on psychological variables, After about 20 hours (T3), there were significant differences in mood state_vigor-activity(𝛘2=7.253, p<0.05), mood state_tension-anxiety (𝛘2=7.041, p<0.05), mood state_anger-hostility(𝛘2=8.318, p<0.05), and state anxiety (𝛘2=7.680, p<0.05). State anxiety also showed a significant difference in T2 (𝛘2=8.811, p<.05). As a result of analyzing the effect on satisfaction and subjective impression, there was a significant difference in satisfaction (𝛘2=6.300, p<0.05) and 'pleasant (𝛘2=6.930, p<0.05), airy (𝛘2=6.628, p<0.05), masculine (𝛘2=6.906, p<0.05), ordinary(𝛘2=6.662, p<0.05), natural (𝛘2=13.924, p<0.001), calm (𝛘2=13.106, p<0.001), safe (𝛘2=7.755, p<0.05)'. Conclusion : The wood interior decorating environment had a positive effect on anxiety and mood, such as lowering depressive and anxious mood and increasing positive changes and as the ratio of wood decoration increased, it had a greater positive effect on emotions.

  • Wood carving has been extremely widely practiced, but survives much less well than the other main materials, being vulnerable to decay, insect damage, and fire. It therefore forms an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. Even though wood is less durable than either steel or stone, it has been used for a long time due to its usefulness. Wood has a lot of benefits. So people have used wood for materials in houses, trains, cars, bridges, and simple utilities in their ways according to their own religions, climates, and environment they are living in. Nowadays, there are wood products that are made up for its weaknesses and this has made wood be used in variety fields. Moreover, wood has been widely selected materials for sculptures, interior, and also for architecture thanks to its colors and textures. Wood has helped our life more abundant and beautiful.

  • This study was carried out to manufacture wooden vessels by small diameter wood and wasted wood of Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc, which has been largely planted in southern area. We made spice set, tea box set, cookie vessel set, bowl set and accessory set. With the development of edged tools, the human species has been able to fashion wood to change and enhance its environment - one only has to look at the history of all cultures to see examples of wooden artifacts and structures. Even with the development of synthetic materials and the progress of automated, mechanized production of wood and wood products, the raw material is still processed by traditional methods to meet a never-ending demand for products made from this most desirable natural material. Chestnut wood has high added value and natural color grain and is very useful for wooden vessel. Thinned low grade trees can be used to produce wooden vessel. Therefore this result can promote thinning and produce good forestation.

  • Improving public awareness of wood is crucial for expanding the use of wood and establishing a wood culture. In this study, the environment and trends of the public's wood utilization were analyzed using a questionnaire survey and online text mining at a time when eco-friendly practices are gaining popularity. As a result of reducing climatic and environmental concerns and its positive physical and psychological effects, the use of wood is predicted to rise in areas intimately connected to everyday living, such as wood furniture, wooden structures, and interior materials. Nonetheless, there was a negative awareness that wood was expensive, difficult to maintain, and associated with deforestation. The correlations between wood-related search terms on major Korean portal sites were analyzed and categorized into five groups: Wooden architecture, cultural education, woodworking, wood industry, and wood policy. As a building material, wood was seen as more traditional and friendly than reinforced concrete and stone. Eighty-six percent of respondents expected to utilize wood as a building material in the future, regardless of whether the wood is domestically produced or imported. Sixty-five percent responded favorably about the effects of wood on the health of wooden home inhabitants. It is believed that both active publicity and quantifiable value analysis of human and environmental friendliness are required to increase pro-environment awareness of wood utilization.

Analysis of Hygrothermal Performance of Wood Frame Walls according to Position of Insulation and Climate Conditions

  • The insulation of a building envelope influences the hygrothermal performance as well as the thermal performance of the building. While most of Korean wood frame houses have an interior insulation system, the exterior insulation system with high thermal performance has recently been applied. While it can be effective in energy savings for better insulation performance, without consideration of the moisture, condensation and mould growth can occur. Therefore, in this study, hygrothermal behaviour, water content, and mould growth were analyzed using hygrothermal simulation of an exterior wall of a wood frame house with which the interior insulation and exterior insulation systems were applied. The wall layer included Wall A (Interior insulation) and Wall B (Exterior insulation). The U-values were identified as 0.173 and $0.157W/m^2K$, respectively. The total water content and OSB absolute water content of Wall A were confirmed to be higher than those of Wall B, but the absolute water content did not exceed the reference value of 20%. The moisture content of the two walls was determined to be stable in the selected areas. However, mould growth risk analysis confirmed that both Wall A and Wall B were at risk of mould growth. It was confirmed that as the indoor setting temperature decreased, the mould index and growth rate in the same area increased. Therefore, the mould growth risk was affected more by indoor and outdoor climate conditions than by the position of the insulation. Consequently, the thermal performance of Wall B was superior to that of Wall A but the hygrothermal performances were confirmed to be similar.

Consumer Preferences for Wood-Framed Housing

  • The purpose of this study was; 1) to describe consumer preferences for wood~framed housing; 2) to determine factors which affect the preferences for housing environments in wood-framed housing by demographic, current housing, and wood-framed housing-related characteristics; and 3) to identify differences in preferred wood-framed housing related characteristics by demographic and current housing characteristics. From the visitors to a model wood-framed house in Seoul, Korea, 296 persons willing to live in a wood-framed house were selected as the sample for the study. Data were collected using a self-administered survey and analyzed by frequency distribution, factor analysis, chi-square test, t-test, and one-way analysis of variance procedures. The results of the study Indicated that among seven factors based on 32 housing characteristics, Factor 2 - "floor plan and Interior environment" was the major variable which showed significant difference by selected demographic characteristics. Regarding the differences in wood-framed housing related characteristics by demographic characteristics, age, gender, education, and family life cycle showed group differences. Also, housing type was the major current housing characteristic to provide significant group difference in preferred wood-framed housing characteristics.

Current Interior Design and User Preference for Child Care Facilities - Focused on Interior Atmosphere, Finishing Materials and Colors - (보육시설 실내디자인 현황과 사용자 선호성향 - 실내분위기, 마감재, 색채를 중심으로 -)

  • As Korea has undergone rapid modernization, urbanization and industrialization, women's social participation has increased. Accordingly, child care facilities have shown continuous growth in numbers. However, according to research, child care facilities in Korea lag behind those in other nations in terms of quality. Given that, it seem urgent to enhance the quality of child care facilities and improve their indoor environment. Above all, overall atmosphere, colors and finishing materials are connected directly with educational effects as well as feelings and health of facility users. This study assesses the current state of child care facilities and preferences by focusing primarily on interior atmosphere, materials and colors. For This Study, 7 facilities were surveyed, and 46 subjects were participated for this study. The findings suggest that "pretty" style is preferred to "natural" style. As regards flooring material, wood floor is preferred. It is recommended to lay pastel colored carpet or PVC flooring material to the wood floor. As for wall, it is desirable to divide the wall spaces by adding wood and painting to simple wallpapers. In case of the ceiling noise absorptive material is recommended to use instead of wallpapers. For the doors, it is desirable to use contrasting materials and colors given accessibility for children. In the meantime, rather than strong primary colors, soft color or pastel colors are desirable for furniture. This study has limitations because of insufficiency of case study samples. However, it is significant in that the study results may be used as primary source of information to improve the environment of child care facilities.

  • Double skin façade is known that several features affected the building energy and daylighting performance. That is why the envelope is able to consist of all architectural materials such as glass, aluminum, wood and insulation for vision of residents and workers in buildings. Its specifications is very diverse according to the building designers and building owners. In recent times, visual environment became a major focus and resulted in the development of cutting edge engineering of diverse glazing systems and shading devices by growing interests of friendly environment. Thus this research has evaluated the fluctuations of interior lighting and atmospheric conditions based on double skin facade systems. Especially in terms of daylighting environment as dependent on solar variations, this research provides quantitative analysis of interior lighting conditions and how it affects the living conditions as well as improve the design of interior spaces.

  • The increasing interest in the environment and climate change around the globe, while the importance of building energy saving is increasing. The building energy simulation program is used for evaluating of energy performance of buildings. However, an input value of wood thermal conductivity in the programs is different from each other. Therefore, in this study, wood thermal conductivity was measured according to species. Through construction database by species of wood, the error of simulation program are able be decreased. In addition, if used as a structural and interior of buildings, the thermal conductivity and moisture of the wood is difficult to apply to the program because they were changed according to the occupant's lifestyle. In this paper, thermal conductivity and moisture content.of wood confirmed changes in the constant temperature and relative humidity ($25^{\circ}C$, 50% R.H.) condition.

  • Qualitative enhancement of dwelling life has changing the recognition for the environment friendly wood which is being highlighted for its usage as an interior materials. This trend may prove the excellent performance of wood whose inherent characteristics has its comfortable, mild feeling of material, sound resistance and stabilities and the market of interior woods including floor, moulding and wooden panel as finishing interior materials is growing sustainably. However, since this materials is vulnerable to humidity and flame, waterproofing and flame retarding stability, an essential condition for interior materials, together with maintenance, are the main topics to be resolved. From the above-mentioned results, as a result of waterdrop contact angle, wood absorption volume and water content percentage test and the performance test of the processed materials after flame retardant, though there was some submerging time changes among types of woods for ensuring waterproofing performance improvement but as time passes, similar tendency was noticed to be formulated. As the submerging time is increased, so does the absorption volume and accordingly optimal level of range is judged to be drawn in order to ensure excellent performance, taking optimal economy into consideration. Therefore, it is considered that above-mentioned woods could be utilized for waterproof and flame retardant processed interior materials using uniform microwave and in order to put this technology into practical application, a research by way of diversified performance proving is required to be carried out.
