A Review of Men's Body Image Literature: What We Know, and Need to Know

  • In the contemporary world, fashionable bodies are socially constructed in light of current idealized images. Media portrayal of such images can have negative health implications. This issue has long been problematic for women. Nowadays, men are subject to more scrutiny regarding their bodies, although male body image has been studied far less than female body image. In this position paper based on a review of the major studies that have been conducted on men and body image, we summarize the findings from these state-of-the-art studies that have been recently published in academic journals. Three themes related to male body image were extracted: socio-cultural ideals, masculinity, and minority men. This study adds to the literature I that it demonstrates that men experience and view their bodies differently from women, though some behaviors, such as disordered eating, are similar. Other behaviors, such as the drive for muscularity, are couched in the context of the social construction of gender and power. Most of the studies were done on white, heterosexual populations of young men, and nearly all used quantitative research methods. Little research has been conducted on ethnic and sexual minorities. We conclude with a discussion of what we need to know, and to that end, we suggest future avenues of research.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the personal experiences of businesswomen regarding appearance management and their body image. To achieve this, diverse perspectives were employed, including critical, practical, and positive body image perspectives. Interviews were conducted with 17 Korean businesswomen with more than 10 years of work experience. The data were analyzed using a phenomenological approach to understand their lived experiences of appearance management and body image. The participants acknowledged that appearance is important in the workplace - more so for women than for men. They commented that appearance may play an important role in displyaing social attractiveness to strangers, but other elements of social attractiveness such as liveliness or social skills take prominence in established relationships. Businesswomen, particularly those whose professions involve the display of appearance, are more likely to engage in aesthetic labor or the unpaid labor of managing their physical appearance in order to meet expectations at work. In general, however, these women considered appearance management to be a practice of self-care which seems to demonstrate their positive body image. This study has significance in that it strived to understand the subjective, lived experiences of businesswomen, including their thoughts and emotions related to appearance management and body image.

패션에 표현된 사이보그 페미니즘 시각 (Cyborg Feminism Expressed in Fashion Design)

  • The recent innovations in technoscience have changed the patterns of everyday lives for women and their politics of identity. Among the various debates on a women's relationship to technoscience, Donna J. Haraway's theory of the cyborg has been one of the most influential, as it provides new modes of conceiving subjectivity as well as new notions of women's shared experiences. For Haraway, the cyborg is an image of a female subject that will lead the future of science and technology as an amalgamation of non-hierarchical differences. This study examines the characteristics and meanings for the distortion, anti-aesthetic body, and clothing in fashion design through the cyborg feminism theory. Characteristics and meanings of the cyborg in fashion designs find their expression through mechanical images, distorted physical transformations, reconstruction of a destructed body, expression of an anatomical and heterogeneous body, and the persona image. Such expressions are not simply an act of distorting and destroying a body image but extending the category of a body, but of going beyond the limit of a real body and create a new body.

밀리터리 패션에 나타난 성적 이미지 연구 - 1990년대 여성복을 중심으로 - (A Study on Gender Images Expressed in Military Fashion - Basis on a Women's wear in the 1990's -)

  • The purpose of this study is understanding modern woman's various aesthetic values and aesthetic sense through observing expression aspects of gender images in the 1990s military fashion and analyzing their aesthetic characteristics and formative factors. Gender images in military fashion have expressed the masculine image of authoritative image and offensive image and offensive image, and the feminine image of conservative image and ostentatious image, sensual image. The authoritative image showed authority and dignity of military uniform by using the classic military uniform's image. This spoke for desire of women to rise their position. Heroism and androcentrism affected as its formation factor. The offensive image destroyed original dignified image of military uniform by that resistance to authoritative image and existing gender identity appeared as way-out form and deconstructive expression. Anti-establishment spirit, resistance to gender identity, and deconstructionism affected as its formation factor. The conservative image expressed military fashion only with slim and soft silhouette, curved line, color, and simple details by magnifying feminity. Fallen man's authority affected as its formation factor. The ostentatious image expressed military fashion with magnifying accessories such as gold button and belt by women who wanted to display ostentatiously their social position and charm. The aspiration for class of elite affected as its formation factor. The sensual image intended to show erotic voluptuous beauty of woman's body by indirect and direct body exposure. Narcissism, desire to show, and sexual amusement affected as its formation factor.

미국내 청소년기 여학생과 어머니의 신체이미지 개념에 대한 연구 (Body Image Perceptions of Adolescent Daughters and Their Mothers in U.S.)

  • 미국내 9살과 14살 사이의 여학생과 어머니와의 관계가 여학생의 신체이미지와 육체만족도(Body Satisfaction)에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구이다. 총 41쌍의 여학생과 어머니가 미국의 노스 캐로라이나에 위치한 $[TC^2]$에 의뢰하여 리쿠르트 되었다. 참가자들은 우선 미국 질병관리 및 방지국(CDC)의 자료를 바탕으로 그들의 BMI 점수를 바탕으로 보통체중과 과체중으로 나누어졌다. Stunkard, Sorenson, and Schulsinger (1983)의 9개의 신체이미지 그림을 사용하여 어머니와 딸의 각자의 이상화된 신체이미지(Ideal Body Image), 상대방의 이상화된 신체이미지, 각자의 신체에 대한 만족도, 그리고 서로의 신체에 대한 만족도를 연구하였다. 논의 및 결론부분으로 과체중 여학생과 그들의 어머니의 서로간의 신체이미지 만족도가 보통체중의 여학생과 그들의 어머니의 신체이미지 만족도에 비해 현저히 낮았고, 상대방에 대한 신체이미지 만족도 또한 현저히 낮았다.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 성격과 신체 만족도에 따라 선호하는 패션 제품의 이미지에 관해 알아보고자 한다. 연구 방법은 선행 문헌 자료를 분석한 후 이를 토대로 설문지를 작성, 배포, 회수한 후 통계처리 하였다. 연구 대상은 만 35$\sim$59세의 우리나라 중년 여성 352명이다. 자료 분석은 SAS와 SPSS를 사용하여 인자분석, 군집분석, ANOVA, Duncan's Multiple Range Test를 실시하였다. 연구 결과 자신의 신체에 대한 만족도가 높을수록 정서적 안정성과 자신감이 높았으며, 보다 대담하고 여성스러운 이미지의 패션 제품을 선호하였다. 성격 특성과 선호하는 패션 제품 이미지와의 관계를 살펴본 결과 지배성이 높은 사람일수록 대담한 이미지의 패션 제품을 선호하였으며, 책임성이 높은 사람일수록 패션 제품에서 실용성을 추구하였으나 대담성에 관해서는 선호도가 낮았다. 정서적 안정성이 높은 사람일수록 품위 있고 실용적인 패션 제품을 선호하였으나 대담스러운 이미지에 관해서는 선호도가 낮았다. 한편 사교성이 높은 사람일수록 품위있고 남성스러운 이미지를 선호하였다. 그리고 자신감이 높은 사람일수록 대담하고 남성스러운 이미지의 패션 제품을 선호하였다.

30대 한국 여성의 체위 분석과 도식화 연구 (A Research of Body Size Analysis and Graphing in 30yrs Korean Women)

  • Purpose: Obesity is already a major clinical problem in Korea, so obesity prevention and treatment practices are gradually interested in Korean Medicine doctors. Moreover subjective body shape image entered as a important medical topic recently. To make a graph system for clinical tool which based on the Korean national standard physical scale in 30yrs Korean women. Methods: Physical data of the girth of upper arm, abdomen, hip, buttock, flank, calf, and body weight were statistically analyzed, which collected through the fifth national standard physical scale research. And then reviewed those statistical validation. Results: Relationship of the each body scale data and those graphs were fit and right statistically. Conclusion: These new achieved graph system of Korean standard body scales could be adopt as a useful clinical tool for body image related patients such as obesity, PCOD and postpartum patient in 30yrs Korean women.

한국 성인의 체질량 지수에 따른 비만도와 주관적 체형인식 간의 차이가 영양소 섭취와 체중조절 및 정신건강에 미치는 영향 : 제 5기 국민건강영양조사 자료를 이용하여 (Effects of the difference between actual body condition and body image perception on nutrient intake, weight control and mental health in Korean adults: Based on the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey)

  • 본 연구는 제5기 국민건강영양조사를 이용하여 만 19~64세 성인 10,608명을 대상으로 BMI를 기준으로 분류한 체형과 주관적 체형인식의 차이를 기준으로 실제 체형보다 마르게 인식하는 RL군, 실제 체형을 올바르게 인식하는 RA군과 실제체형보다 비만하다고 인식하는 RH군으로 분류하여 각 그룹의 영양소 섭취, 체중조절 여부, 정신건강 상태를 비교하였다. 1) RH군의 비율은 19~29세, 30~49세, 50~64세에서 남자는 12.1%, 9.5%, 10.0%였고, 여자는 31.2%, 29.0%, 20.3%로 여자에서 RH군의 더 비율이 높았고, RL군의 비율은 남자 19~29세, 30~49세, 50~64세에서 26.0%, 24.2%, 28.8%였고, 여자는 3.9%, 5.7%, 14.6%로 남자에서 RL군의 비율이 더 높았다. 2) 남녀 연령대별 BMI에서 남자 19~29세, 30~49세의 평균 BMI는 RA군이 가장 높고 RH군, RL군 순위였으며 50~64세에선 RL군이 가장 낮았다. 여자 19~29세에서는 RL군이 가장 낮았으며, 30~49세, 50~64세에선 RA군이 가장 높고 RH군, RL군 순이었다. 3) 남자의 경우 19~29세에서 탄수화물 섭취량은 RH군이 가장 낮게 섭취하였다. 여자는 30~49세에서 총에너지 섭취량은 실제체형보다 비만하게 인식하는 RH군이 에너지 섭취가 가장 낮았으며 RL군이 가장 많이 섭취했다. 여자 30~49세와 50~64세에서 탄수화물 섭취량이 RH군에서 가장 낮았고 총에너지 섭취량에 따른 탄수화물 섭취비율 또한 30~49세에서 실제체형보다 비만하게 인식하는 RH군에서 가장 낮아 실제체형보다 비만하게 인식하였을 때 탄수화물 섭취량이 적었으며 이로 인해 에너지 섭취량이 적었다. 4) 남자 50~64세를 제외한 남녀 모든 연령대에서 실제체형보다 비만하게 인식하는 RH군이 체중 감량 시도를 가장 많이 한 것을 알 수 있고, 남자 19~29세, 30~49세, 전 연령대의 여자에서 실제체형보다 비만하게 인식하는 RH군에서 체중이 증가한 경우가 가장 적었지만, 주별 중등도 운동 일수에는 차이가 없어서 체형인식과 운동량은 관련이 없었다. 5) 남자 19~29세에서 실제체형보다 비만하게 인식하는 RH군이 우울감을 느낀 비율이 높았지만, 남자 50~64세에서는 실제체형보다 마르게 인식하는 RL군이 우울감 경험 비율과 스트레스가 높아 체형인식에 따른 우울감은 남성에서 연령별로 차이를 보였다. 결론적으로 본 연구를 통해 성별과 연령에 따라 다소 차이가 있지만 실제체형보다 자신을 비만하다고 인식할 때 탄수화물의 섭취를 줄이고, 체중조절을 더 시도하며, 젊은 남성들에서 우울감 경험률이 높음을 알 수 있었다. 이에 따라 올바른 신체상을 확립하기 위해선 마른 몸매 선호에 대한 왜곡된 사회문화적 분위기를 개선하고 자신의 체형에 대한 올바른 인식이 필요함을 확인하였다.

탄력 밴드를 이용한 유산소운동이 유방절제술여성의 신체적 기능과 신체상에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Aerobic Exercise Using a Flex-band on Physical Functions & Body Image in Women Undergoing Radiation Therapy after a Mastectomy)

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of aerobic exercise using a flex band on the improvement of physical functions & body image in breast cancer women undergoing radiation therapy after a mastectomy. Method: Women with breast cancer(n =26) were assigned to an experimental group(EG, n = 15) and control group(CG, n = 11). The E.G participated in an aerobic exercise program with a 60% to 80% intensity of maximal heart rate for 25 minutes during the main exercise, 3 times per week, for 6 weeks. The EG did not exercise regularly for 3 months before participating in this program. The CG received no exercise treatment during the research period. Data were analyzed using the $x^2-test$ and Mann-Whitney U test by the SPSS version 11.0 program at a 5% significant level. Results: Group analysis revealed that the EGwomen had significantly more improved cardio-pulmonary functions, ROM of the affected shoulder joint, and body image compared to the CG, Conclusion: Aerobic exercise using a flex band may be an effective rehabilitative measure for mastectomy women with respect to cardio-pulmonary functions, ROM, & body image. Further studies are recommended to study early rehabilitation programs within 10 days post-operatively.

여자대학생의 외모에 대한 사회문화적 영향과 신체이미지가 외모향상추구행동에 미치는 영향 (Sociocultural Influence of Appearance and Body Image on Appearance Enhancement Behavior of Female College Students)

  • This study investigated the effects of sociocultural influence and body image on appearance enhancement behavior (facial management, clothing selection, and weight/figure management). For data collection, a questionnaire was administrated to 378 female college students in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from May $23^{rd}$ to June $10^{th}$ 2013. A SPSS 18.0 statistics package was used to analyze data along with descriptive statistical analysis, frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis and frequency analysis. The results were as follows. First, sociocultural influences were divided into three factors: media influence, peer influence, and parental influence. Overall sociocultural influences had positive effects on appearance enhancement behavior. Second, body image was divided into: appearances-management, body-satisfaction and body confidence. Sociocultural influences had a significant effect on overall body image. Third, body image positively affected overall appearance enhancement behavior.
