  • The purpose of this study is to determine the petrology of basalt and the volcanic process in the Seondol cinder cone, Seobjikoji area, eastern Jeju Island. The Seondol cinder cone is mainly composed of spatters in the lower part, pyroclastic deposits including reddish brown blocks, ashes with volcanic bombs in the middle part, and dark black scoria deposits in the upper part. The volcanic sequences suggest volcanic processes that progress through Strombolian eruption and end with Hawaiian lava effusion which breached the cinder cone northwestward and extended over northwestward as lava delta and basalt emplaced as a volcanic neck in the central part of crater in the cinder cone. The age of basalt lava flows is about $95\;{\pm}\;3\;ka$. The basalts belong to transitional basalt and show products of fractional crystallization of clinopyroxene and olivine from a parental basalt magma on the basis of variation diagram of major, trace and rare earth elements. Basalts in the region of this study are plotted at the region of within plate basalt.

  • We investigated geochemical characteristics of the Dodong Basaltic Rocks in the lower part of the Ulleung Island. They have lithological range of alkali basalt to trachybasalt, belonging to Na and K subseries of alkaline series. They mostly fall within the field of alkalline within-plate basalts on tectonic discrimination diagrams, and then plot in the field of oceanic island basalt (OIB). Geochemically, extension of lithospheric mantle and asthenospheric upwelling after East Sea under an Cenozoic extensional tectonic setting might be a heat source for partial melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle, which might generate the basaltic magma. But we cannot exclude that mantle plume might also be a heat source for melting of the lithospheric mantle.

  • This study has been designed to elucidate the petrography and geochemical characteristics of the Taeheung-ri lava in southeastern Jeju Island. The lava is divided into the alkaline basalt and tholeiitic basalt. More than 4 layers of tholeiitic basalt are overlain by layers of alkaline basalt. Compared with alkaline basalt, tholeiitic basalt has lower contents of $K_2O$, $P_2O_5$, Ba and Ta, but slight higher contents of $SiO_2$ and CaO. The contents of Ba and Rb of all basalts are enriched, but those of Ni and Cr are depleted compared with primitive mantle compositions. All basalts show inclined chondrite-normalized REE patterns with LREE enriched more than HREE and alkaline basalt has relatively higher. The basalts of this study area are plotted in the field of within plate basalt on the tectonomagmatic discrimination diagram. Tholeiitic basalt has higher ratios of Zr/Nb, Y/Nb, and $Al_2O_3/P_2O_5$ than alkaline basalt. Both tholeiitic and alkaline basalt are similar in their K/Ba ratios. The geochemical data suggest that the parental magma of both basalts might be produced by different degrees of partial melting of similar source mantle. The tholeiitic basalt formed by higher degree of partial melting than the alkaline basalt.

  • Petrographical and petrochemical analyses for late Miocene basalts in Goseong-gun area. Gangwon province, were carried out to interpret the characteristics and the origin of magma. The basaltic rocks occurred as plug-dome in the summit of several small mountain and developed columnar jointing with pyroxene-megacryst bearing porphyritic texture. And the basalt contains xenoliths of biotite granite (basement rocks), gabbro (lower crustal origin) and Iherzolite(upper mantle origin). The basalts belong to the alkaline basalt field in TAS diagram and partly belong to picrobasalt and trachybasalt field. On the tectonomagmatic discrimination diagram f3r basalt in the Goseong-gun area. they fall into the fields for the within plate and oceanic island basalt. The characteristics of trace elements and REEs shows that primary magma for the basalt magma would have been derived from partial melting of garnet-peridotite mantle. This late Miocene basalt volcanism is related to the hot spot within the palte.

  • The basaltic rocks of Daljeon-ri columnar joint (Natural Monuments # 415) and Noeseongsan Noerok site (Natural Monuments # 547) were analysed in order to understand basalt types of two areas. The basaltic rocks of the Pohang Daljeon-ri columnar joint show a typical porphyritic texture containing phenocrysts (olivine and clinopyroxene) and groundmasses composed of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and opaque minerals,. In contrast, basaltic rocks of Noeseongsan Noerok are characterized by fine-grained groundmass with large phenocrysts of plagioclase. Other analysis such as magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence also support the petrological differences of two basalt rocks. The Daljeon-ri basaltic rocks are plotted on phonotephrite volcanic rocks of alkaline series in TAS(total alkali silica), and on within plate basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. The Noeseongsan basalts, on the other hand, are plotted on basaltic andesite to andesite of sub-alkaline series in TAS, and on volcanic arc basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. These results indicate that the original mantle materials between two basalt rocks were different each other, which probably originated from the change of a tectonic setting in the southeastern Korean peninsula during the Miocene.

  • One hundred of thirty volcanic rocks col1ected from the Jeju island, Jeongog, Guryongpo and other areas were analyzed for major elements and trace elements with Au by inductively coupled argon plasma and graphite furnace atomic absorptiom spectrometry. The Au content is the highest values (0.2~43.4 ppb, average; 10.34 ppb) from the Jeju island volcanic rocks and the lowest (0.5~11.0 ppb, average; 1.23 ppb) from the Guryongpo volcanic area. The content of Au tends to be higher in the Quarternary volcanic rocks than Tertiary or Cretaceous volcanic rocks. The Au content of the calc alkali volcanic rocks tends to increase from mafic to felsic volcanic rocks, but that of the alkalic volcanic rocks tends to increase from felsic to mafic volcanic rocks. The Au content of the volcanic rocks collected from the Jeju island shows the highest values in the feldspar olivine basalts. Elements or oxides which have positive or negative correlations with Au are Ag, Mo, Rb, V, Y, $K_2O$, MgO and $SiO_2$, but other elements analyzed are not shown correlations with Au. It has a tendency to show that samples from the Jeju with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the non-Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the Dupal area, while those from the Jeongog with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the non-Dupal area, in the Ba/Nb-La/Nb, Zr/Nb-Ba/Nb diagrams. It shows that samples from the Jeju and Guryongpo with high gold content are plotted in the within-plate, while those with low gold content are plotted in the arc-related area, and those from the Jeongog are scattered in the $TiO_2-Al_2O_3$, $Zr/A1_2O_3-TiO_2/Al_2O_3$ diagrams.

  • The Yeongdong basin is one of the pull-apart basins in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula that has developed during Cretaceous sinistal fault movement. The bimodal igneous activities (basalts and rhyolites) in the basin appear to be closely associated with the basin development. Here, we discuss the origin of the igneous rocks using chemical and radiogenic isotope data. Basaltic (48.4-52.7 wt% SiO$_2$) and rhyolitic (70.3-70.8 wt% SiO$_2$) rocks are slightly alkalic in a total alkali-silica diagram. The rhyolitic rocks with have unusually high K$_2$O contents (5.2-6.0 wt%). The basaltic rocks show an overall pattern of within-plate basalt in a MORB-normalized spider diagram, but have distinct negative anomaly of Nb, which indicates a significant amount of crustal component in the magma. The basaltic rocks plot within the calc-alkaline basalt field in the Hf/3-Th-Ta and Y/l5-La/10-Nb/8 discrimination diagrams. The eNd(T) values of the basaltic rocks (-13.6 to 14.3) are slightly higher than those of the rhyolitic rocks (-14.1 to 15.2), and the initial Sr isotopic ratios of the former (0.7085-0.7093) are much lower than those of the latter (0.7140-0.7149). However, the initial Nd and Sr isotope ratios of the igneous rocks in the Yeongdong basin are similar to those of the nearby Cretaceous igneous rocks in the Okcheon belt. The Pb isotope ratios plot within the field of Mesozoic granitoids outside of the Gyeongsang basin in Pb-Pb correlation diagrams. Since a basaltic magma requires the mantle source, the enriched isotopic signatures and negative Nb anomaly of the basaltic rocks suggest two possibilities for their origin: enriched mantle lithospheric source, or depleted mantle source with significant amount of crustal contamination. However, we prefer the first possibility since it would be difficult for a basaltic magma to maintain its bulk composition when it is significantly contaminated with granitic crustal material. The slightly more enriched isotopic signatures of rhyolitic rocks also suggest two possibilities: differentiate of the basaltlc magma with some crustal contamination, or direct partial melting of the lower crust. Much larger exposed volume of the rhyolitic rocks, compared with the basaltic rocks, indicates the latter possibility more favorable.

  • Geochemical characteristics of the Early Cretaceous igneous rocks from eastern China and the Gyeongsang Basin, Korean Peninsula has been summarized. They have wide range of lithological variation with extrusive picrite-basalt-andesite-trachyte-rhyolite and lamprophyre, and intrusive gabbro-diorite-monzonite-syenite-granite and diabase in eastern China, mostly belonging to the high-K calc-alkaline or shoshonitic series. The volcanic rocks intercalated with the Hayang Group sedimentary assemblages in the Gyeongsang basin are high-K to shoshonitic basaltic trachyandesites. The Early Cretaceous basaltic rocks studied mostly fall within the field of within-plate basalts on the Zr/Y-Zr and Nb-Zr-Y tectonic discrimination diagrams. On a Sr-Nd isotope correlation diagram, basaltic rocks from the North China block (NCB) and the continent-continent collision zone (CZ) between the North and South China blocks plot into the enriched lower right quadrant along the extension of the mantle array. The initial $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratios of basaltic rocks from the South China block (SCB) are indistinguishable from those of the NCB and CZ basaltic rocks, but their ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}$ (t) values are relatively more elevated, plotting in right side of the mantle array. Basaltic rocks from the NCB and CZ are characterized by low $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb(t)$ ratios, lying to the left of the Geochron on the $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb(t)$ vs. $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb(t)$ correlation. Meanwhile, the SCB basaltic rocks have relatively radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions compared with those of the NCB and CZ basaltic rocks. Basaltic rocks from the Hayang Group plot within the field of the NCB basaltic rocks in Sr-Nd and Pb-Pb isotope spaces. Metasomatically enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) is likely to have been the dominant source for the early Cretaceous magmatism. Asthenospheric upwelling under an early Cretaceous extensional tectonic setting in eastern China and the Korean Peninsula might be a heat source for melting of the enriched SCLM. Metasomatic agents proposed include partial melts of lower continental crust delaminated and foundered into the mantle or subducted Yangtze continental crust, or fluid/melt derived from the subducted paleo-Pacific plate.

  • We studied petrological and geochemical characteristics of the Mesozoic volcanic rocks in the Da Hinggan Ling area northeast China, and discussed tectonic settings and origin of the Mesozoic volcanic rocks in northeast Asia. Volcanic rocks in Da Hinggan Ling area are composed of alkaline to subalkaline basalt-basaltic andesite-andesite-dacite-rhyolite, showing typical BAR(basalt-andesite-rhyolite) association. However, most of the volcanic rocks are basaltic and rhyolitic in composition, and andesitic rocks are relatively rare, which shows bimodal characteristics. Rb, Ba, Th and other incompatible element contents in the volcanic rocks are enriched, but the contents decrease with increasing the compatibility. REEs are fractionated and REE patterns of volcanic rocks are characterized by a high LILE/HFSE. On the tectonomagmatic discriminant diagram of Hf-Th-Nb, they fall into the fields for subduction-related destructive plate margin basalts and its differentiates. We suggest that the tectonomagmatic setting of Da Hinggan Ling area was located at the continental margin arc related with subduction environment during the Mesozoic time or may be derived from mantle plume contaminated geochemically from subducting slabs, although it is, at present within the Asia continent.

  • We present petrography, mineral chemistry of amphibole and plagioclase, and major and trace element chemistry for the Ogcheon metabasites occurring in the Poun and Mungyong areas to understand metamorphism, and to define chemical characteristics of parental rocks and their implication for tectonic environment. The Ogcheon metabasites often preserve relict igneous textures, although no primary phases are observed. They are mainly composed of amphibole (actinolite+hornblende)+plagioclase+epidote+chlorite+sphene+opaque oxides, indicating epidote amphibolite facies metamorphism. Coarse-grained amphiboles frequently have actinolitic composition in the core, and hornblende along the margin and cleavage, which can be interpreted either as miscibility gap or as result of polymetamorphism. Although presumed polymetamorphic events in the Ogcheon supergroup favor the latter possibility, further metamorphic studies are necessary to solve the problem. Amphibole and plagioclase chemistries suggest greenschist (epidote-amphibolite, if miscibility gap is present) to amphibolite facies metamorphism of possibly medium pressure. The major and trace element data of whole rocks indicate that the Ogcheon metabasites are transitional to tholeiitic basalts belonging to within-plate environment. Absence of evidences indicating deep sea environment suggests that the Ogcheon metabasites emplaced in an intra-cratonic, possibly rift environment which failed to proceed to an oceanic rift. Chemical variation of the metabasites toward a granitic pluton indicates K loss closer to the pluton, suggesting that caution should be taken when K is involved in a discussion.
