Since WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) applied to their application areas such as smart home, smart factory, environment monitoring, etc., depend on sensor data, the sensor data is the most important among WSN components. The resources of each node consisting of WSN are extremely limited in energy, hardware and so on. Due to these limitation, communication failure probabilities become much higher and the communication failure causes data loss to occur. For this reason, this paper proposes 2MC (Maximum/Minimum Compression) that is a method to compress sensor data by selecting circular queue-based maximum/minimum sensor data values. Our proposed method reduces sensor data losses and value errors when they are recovered. Experimental results of 2MC method show the maximum/minimum 35% reduction efficiency in average sensor data accumulation error rate after the 3 times compression, comparing with CQP (Circular Queue Compression based on Period) after the compressed data recovering.
Authentication is an important service in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for an unattended environment. Recently, Das proposed a hash-based authentication protocol for WSNs, which provides more security against the masquerade, stolen-verifier, replay, and guessing attacks and avoids the threat which comes with having many logged-in users with the same login-id. In this paper, we point out one security weakness of Das' protocol in mutual authentication for WSN's preservation between users, gateway-node, and sensor nodes. To remedy the problem, this paper provides a secrecy improvement over Das' protocol to ensure that a legal user can exercise a WSN in an insecure environment. Furthermore, by presenting the comparisons of security, computation and communication costs, and performances with the related protocols, the proposed protocol is shown to be suitable for higher security WSNs.

Reduction of power consumption has been a major issue and an interesting challenge to maximize the lifetime of wireless sensor networks. We investigate the practical meaning of N-policy in queues as a power saving technique in a WSN. We consider the N-policy of a finite M/M/1 queue. We formulate the optimization problem of power consumption considering the packet loss probability. We analyze the trade-off between power consumption and the packet loss probability and demonstrate the operational characteristics of N-policy as a power saving technique in a WSN with various numerical examples.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) can be applied to various industry fields and environment analysis fields with the progress of various sensor technologies. Also WSN help automatically monitoring of sensor nodes installed at wide area. Especially, the tiny sensor nodes recently developed for the environment analysis require much more electronic power. The reasons are the measurable fields are departmentalized and the more detailed measuring fields are created by the development of various materials and applications. Furthermore, the sensor nodes operated by small batteries for the fields require low cost and low power consumption in wireless networks technology. The power efficiency is the most important factor for the WSN life time. Because the sensor nodes are installed at wide area and hard to recover. This paper proposes the WSN algorithm is applied sensor node that has low power consumption and efficiency measurement.

TPSN(Timing-sync Protocol for Sensor Networks), the representative of time synchronization protocol for WSN(wireless sensor networks), was developed to provide higher synchronization accuracy and energy efficiency. So, TPSN's approach has been referenced by so many other WSN synchronization schemes till now. However, TPSN has a collision problem due to simultaneous transmission among competing nodes, which causes more network convergence delay for a network-wide synchronization. A Polling-based scheme for TPSN is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme not only shortens network-wide synchronization time of TPSN, but also reduce collision traffic which lead to needless power consumption. The proposed scheme's performance has been evaluated and compared with an original scheme by simulation. The results are shown to be better than the original algorithm used in TPSN.
The development of wireless sensor networks (WSN) can be motivated by several types of applications. However, these applications demand an energy-efficient WSN that can prolong the network lifetime and can provide high throughput, low latency and delay. Designing wireless sensor networks with the capability of prolonging network lifetime catch the attention of many researchers in wireless system and network field. Contrasts with Mobile Ad Hoc Network system, Wireless Sensor Networks designs focused more on survivability of each node in the network instead of maximizing data throughput or minimizing end-to-end delay. In this paper, we will study part of data link layer in Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, called medium access control (MAC) layer. Since the MAC development of energy aware MAC Protocol for wireless sensor layer controls the physical radio part, it has a large impact on the overall energy consumption and the lifetime of a node. This paper proposes a analytical approach that tries to reduce idle energy consumption, and shows the increasement of network end-to-end arrival rate due to efficiency in energy consumption from time slot management.

Many researches have been focused on localization in WSNs. However, the solutions for localization in static WSN are hard to apply to the mobile WSN. The solutions for mobile WSN localization have the assumption that there are a significant number of anchor nodes in the networks. In the resource limited situation, these solutions are difficult in applying to the static and mobile mixed WSN. Without using the anchor nodes, a localization service cannot be provided in efficient, accurate and reliable way for mixed wireless sensor networks which have a combination of static nodes and mobile nodes. Also, accuracy is an important consideration for localization in the mixed wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we presented a method to satisfy the requests for the accuracy of the localization without anchor nodes in the wireless sensor networks. Hop coordinates measurements are used as an accurate method for anchor free localization. Compared to the other methods with the same data in the same category, this technique has better accuracy than other methods. Also, we applied a minimum spanning tree algorithm to satisfy the requests for the efficiency such as low communication and computational cost of the localization without anchor nodes in WSNs. The Java simulation results show the correction of the suggested approach in a qualitative way and help to understand the performance in different placements.

In wireless sensor networks, increasing the sensing rate of each node to improve the data accuracy usually incurs a decrease of network lifetime. In this study, an energy-adaptive data compression scheme is proposed to efficiently control the sensing rate in an energy-harvesting wireless sensor network (WSN). In the proposed scheme, by utilizing the surplus energy effectively for the data compression, each node can increase the sensing rate without any rise of blackout time. Simulation result verifies that the proposed scheme gathers more amount of sensory data per unit time with lower number of blackout nodes than the other compression schemes for WSN.
Recently, lot of researches for the multi-level protocol have been done to balance the sensor node energy consumption of WSN and improve the node efficiency to extend the life of the entire network. Especially in multi-hop protocol, a variety of models have been proposed to improve energy efficiency and apply it to WSN protocol. In this paper, we analyze LEACH algorithm and propose new method based on center of local clustering routing algorithm in wireless sensor networks. We also perform NS-2 simulation to show the performance of our model.

Cluster-based wireless sensor network (WSN) can significantly reduce the energy consumption by data aggregation and has been widely used in WSN applications. However, due to the intrinsic many-to-one traffic pattern in WSN, the network lifetime is generally deteriorated by the unbalanced energy consumption in a cluster-based WSN. Therefore, energy efficiency and network lifetime improvement are two crucial and challenging issues in cluster-based WSNs. In this paper, we propose a Non-Uniform Node Distribution (NUND) scheme to improve the energy efficiency and network lifetime in cluster-based WSNs. Specifically, we first propose an analytic model to analyze the energy consumption and the network lifetime of the cluster-based WSNs. Based on the analysis results, we propose a node distribution algorithm to maximize the network lifetime with a fixed number of sensor nodes in cluster-based WSNs. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the theoretical analysis results determined by the proposed analytic model are consistent with the simulation results, and the NUND can significantly improve the energy efficiency and network lifetime.
