  • Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) deal with variety of healthcare services with diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. However, QoS handling is a challenging problem in such networks. In general, QoS related problems can be addressed from different layers in the networking protocol suite. Design of an efficient QoS aware Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol can address this problem in MAC layer. This paper analyzes the QoS requirements of WBAN, identifies the requisites of QoS handling system, and outlines the trends that are being followed for its advancement with focus on QoS issues at MAC layer. We review some prior works, compare them, and analyze the current research concerned with problem of providing QoS in WBAN. We also explore some open issues and discuss them.

  • Future communication networks would consist of wired and wireless access networks where there would be various types of traffic services. To meet the QoS requirements of those various traffic services simultaneously, new QoS control schemes are required. Since they are simple to deploy, cheep to manage, and easy to support subscriber mobility, wireless access networks are considered here. In this paper, a wireless joint buffer management and scheduling (W-JoBS) scheme, which is a modified version of the original JoBS algorithm at error-prone wireless access networks, is proposed. W-JoBS scheme is for providing service fairness among traffic classes with service compensation and channel-state dependent packet scheduling schemes. With computer simulation, this proposed W-JoBS scheme is evaluated and the performance of W-JoBS is compared with that of the original JoBS.

  • In this paper, we present a QoS-aware MAC protocol (QA-MAC) for cluster based wireless sensor networks (WSNs). QA-MAC is a TDMA-based scheduling protocol that minimizes the energy consumption in multi-hop WSNs and provides Quality of Service (QoS). A dynamic scheduling algorithm according to the number of member nodes, node traffics, and traffic priorities is suggested. The selected cluster head allocates time slots for all member nodes in the first TDMA schedule period of each round. During the second schedule period in each round, the cluster head makes a schedule for all data transmission. The proposed QA-MAC (QoS-Aware MAC) could save energy, reduce transmission delay, and support QoS.

  • QoS in wireless multimedia sensor networks is an important issue to enhance streaming media service. This paper proposes a new 2-layer based QoS evaluation scheme for enhancing the streaming media QoS of wireless multimedia sensor networks. The proposed scheme performs the fuzzy relevance to control the streaming between application layer and network layer, and it performs 2-layer mapping process to enhance the transmission reliability and throughput. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves improved performance in packet control ratio, transmission reliability, and delay overhead ratio compared with those of other existing schemes.

  • The integration of WLAN and beyond 3G mobile networks offers the possibility of achieving anytime and anywhere Internet access. Moreover the requests for seamless multimedia services and the Quality of Service (QoS) support have been one of key issues in wireless networks. Therefore the researches relative to seamless multimedia service and QoS over heterogeneous wireless networks have been progressing rapidly. In this paper, we propose inter-working architecture for supporting seamless multimedia service and QoS over WLAN and WiBro networks. Based on the proposed inter-working architecture, we also provide both the seamless handover architecture such an inter-network vertical handover and the QoS-aware wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) scheme. In addition, we evaluate and compare the performance by Network Simulator-2 (NS-2) simulations.

  • It is essential to satisfy class-specific QoS constraints to provide broadband services for new generation networks. The present study proposes a QoS-driven multicast scheme for wireless networks in which the transmission rate and end-to-end delay are assumed to be bounded during a multiple multicast session. A distributed algorithm was used to identify a cost-efficient sub-graph between the source and destination which can satisfy QoS constraints of a multicast session. The model was then modified as to be applied for wireless networks in which satisfying interference constraints is the main challenge. A discrete power control scheme was also applied for the QoS-aware multicast model to accommodate the effect of transmission power level based on link capacity requirements. We also proposed random power allocation (RPA) and gradient power allocation (GPA) algorithms to efficient resource distribution each of which has different time complexity and optimality levels. Experimental results confirm that the proposed power allocation techniques decrease the number of unavailable links between intermediate nodes in the sub-graph and considerably increase the chance of finding an optimal solution.

Abstract As interest in wireless hand-held terminals and in personal communications services increases recently, there have been broad studies on the ways to support multimedia applications provided in wired networks such as B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) in wireless networks. However, since many studies have focused on Quality of Service (QoS) Provisioning in wired networks to provide multimedia applications, new methods of QoS Provisioning are needed in wireless networks to resolve the problem of wireless channel fading and the difficulty of mobility occurred in wireless networks. This paper proposes three schemes of QoS Provisioning in wireless networks which will make continuous QoS guarantee and efficient use of limited wireless resources possible. The first scheme reserves bandwidth in proportion to the amount of real-time traffic in the neighbor cells to decrease the handoff dropping rate of delay sensitive real-time connections, adapting reserved bandwidth for efficient resource utilization. The second scheme is predictive bandwidth reservation scheme that utilizes the past handoff information. It can decrease overheads required to adapt bandwidth reservation. The last scheme is priority-based call admission control prioritizing traffic type (real-time traffic/ non-real-time traffic), connection type (new connection /handoff connection), and mobile terminal speed (fast mobile/slow mobile). Simulation results show that the proposed QoS Provisioning schemes improve the total system performance by achieving three goals - required QoS guarantee, higher bandwidth utilization and less overhead.

  • In the wireless mobile networks, it IS important to provide the quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees as they are increasingly expected to support the multimedia applications Although the QoS provisioning problem arises in the wire-line networks as well, the mobility of hosts and the scarcity of bandwidth make QoS provisioning a challenging task in wireless mobile networks. The resource allocation to multimedia applications of varying QoS reqUlrement 15 a complex issue. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive resource allocation scheme based on the concept of the resource reservation and the renegotiation in order to guarantee the QoS of the real-tune traffic. The proposed scheme is aimed at improving the perfonnance in terms of the new call blocking rate, the bandoff dropping rate, and the bandwIdth utilization.

  • The Quality of Experience (QoE) of next Generation wired/wireless network services based upon IP networking is becoming a popular issue in recent years. The user experience of Internet services such as IPTV, online game, web surfing and etc, are becoming the most desirable factors to service providers to improve service performance and customer's satisfaction. However, collecting user experience from customers and obtaining the QoE parameters from the Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as bandwidth, delay, jitter or admission control algorithm, are difficult subjects because of the various service types and user characteristics. In this paper, we propose a framework which contains service classification, QoE analysis and service enhancement steps for a suitable QoE measurement and management protocol. We define the user satisfaction indicators of the Internet services, classify the categories of each type of services, and analyse the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) in each type of services to perform the QoS parameters and improving the service qualities.

  • In wireless networking environments, supporting guaranteed quality of service to mobile hosts is difficult due to the facts that wireless networks have limited bandwidth and mobile hosts frequently move in and out of cells. In spite of the characteristics of wireless communications, the quality of some types of services, i.e., real-time services, must be guaranteed at a certain level. When a mobile host moves into another cell, service rates for mobile hosts in wireless networks may be adjusted since wireless networks have limited bandwidths. In this paper, we propose two resource allocation algorithms in wireless mobile networks, using quality of service (QoS) specifications. For efficient use of resources of wireless networks, the proposed algorithms dynamically allocate rates of flows in proportion to QoS with limited resources.
