  • The battery consumption and the wireless communication pattern were analyzed for the low power and the improvement of channel interferences between of Zigbee networks and WPAN(Wireless Personal Area Network). The communication patterns considering end device's battery saving during channel searching period were analyzed for low power consumption topology of Zigbee dynamic ad-hoc characteristics. And, the communication patterns were analyzed due to channel interferences between WLAN and Random Back off of Zigbee, too. As a result, the communication patterns of Zigbee's coordinator and end devices is alleviated for the longer battery life time of Zigbee's end device due to Zigbee's end device setting techniques.

  • ZigBee network, based on PHY, MAC layer provides a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols using small, low-power digital radio based on an IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Meshing is a type of daisy chaining from one device to another. This technique allows the short range of an individual node to be expanded and multiplied, covering a much larger area. Each wireless technology that makes it to market serves a special purpose or function. Zigbee provides short-range connectivity in what is called a personal-area network (PAN). Within ZigBee PAN coordinator as manages an entire ZigBee network, the short range of frequency band was only selected because the technology allows typically less than 100 kbp or ZigBee troubles in retransmission processing and delaying data tranmission works to create unproductive condition of work. This research was proposed the method, based on short range frequency of zigBee nodes enable to long range of remote data transmission with specific algorithm tools.

  • Last few years, wireless personal area network (WPAN) has been widely researched for various healthcare applications. Due to restriction of device hardware (e.g., energy and memory), we need to design a highly-versatile MAC layer protocol for WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network). In addition, when an emergency occurs to a patient, a priority mechanism is necessitated for a urgent message to get through to the final destination. This paper presents a priority mechanism referred to as hybrid priority MAC for WBAN. Through extensive simulation, we show the proposed MAC protocol can minimize the average packet latency for urgent data. Thus, when patients have an emergency situation, our MAC allows adequate assistance time and medical treatment for patients. The simulation based on NS-2 shows that our Hybrid Priority MAC has the good performance and usability.

  • In this paper, we propose the energy efficient transmission parameter selection method for Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) system which is applied to e-Navigation system considering various ship models environment. An appropriate selection of transmission parameters of HR-WPAN system is very essential to be considered for saving WPAN devices' energy consumption, when HR-WPAN system is applied to ship area network (SAN). Therefore, we propose an energy consumption model for a ship area network employing IEEE 802.15.3 based CSMA/CA HR-WPAN model and analyze the effect of transmission parameter selection on the performance of energy consumption. In particular, the path loss is the major performance decision parameter for the SAN employing HR-WPAN system, since it varies according to the material of shipbuilding such as steel(for large ship), FRP(for medium size ship) and compound wood(for small ship). Thus, we analyze and demonstrate that the proper transmission parameter selection of transmit power, PHY data rate and fragment size for each ship model could guarantee energy efficiency.

  • Recently, as IoT (Internet of Things) becomes more important, low cost implementation of sensor nodes also becomes critical issues for two well-known standards, IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.15.6 which stands for WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) and WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network), respectively. This paper presents the area-optimized AES-CCM (Advanced Encryption Standard - Counter with CBC-MAC) hardware security engine which can support both IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.15.6 standards. First, for the low cost design, we propose the 8-bit AES encryption core with the S-box that consists of fully combinational logic based on composite field arithmetic. We also exploit the toggle method to reduce the complexity of design further by reusing the AES core for performing two operation mode of AES-CCM. The implementation results show that the total gate count of proposed AES-CCM security engine can be reduced by up to 42.5% compared to the conventional design.

  • The IEEE 802.15.4 low rate wireless personal area network is a protocol suitable for wireless sensor networks. Thus there has been growing interest in the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol in the home automation networks. This paper proposes a scheduling scheme obtaining optimal parameters regarding the IEEE 802.15.4 frame and subframes in the home automation networks. Guaranteed time slots (GTS) are exploited for the delivery of real-time traffic. Given a set of the requirements for bandwidths and periods assigned to nodes in the network, the beacon interval and the active/inactive subframe duration satisfying the requirements are selected considering the low duty cycle by the proposed scheme. Based on these parameters, analytic results provide the way to efficient use of network resources including energy.

  • Security in WPAN is one of the most fundamental issues to overcome the barrier of wireless environment. Although piconet security mechanisms have been defined in the WPAN standards, many remains open and are left for implementation. Koinonia is a high-rate Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) technology, and is developed for multimedia traffic transmission in personal area. In Koinonia WPAN, a piconet consists of one master and more than one slave, and piconet security mechanisms is not defined at all. Therefore, we propose a robust piconet security mechanism for secure communications between slaves in a piconet. Based on security requirements analysis, our proposed protocols are shown to meet the security needs for Koinonia high-rate WPAN.

  • Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) has emerged as a personal entertainment source for home users. Streaming IPTV content over a wireless medium with good Quality of Service (QoS) can be a challenging task as IPTV content requires more bandwidth and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are susceptible to packet loss, delay and jitter. This research presents the capacity of IPTV using User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and TCP Friendly Rate Control (TFRC) over IEEE 802.11ac WLANs in good and bad network conditions. Experimental results show that in good network conditions, UDP and TFRC could accommodate a maximum of 78 and 75 Standard Definition Television (SDTV) users, respectively. In contrast, 15 and 11 High-Definition Television (HDTV) users were supported by UDP and TFRC, respectively. Performance of UDP and TFRC was identical in bad network conditions and same number of SDTV and HDTV users were supported by TFRC and UDP. With background Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic, both UDP and TFRC can support nearly the same number of SDTV users. It was found that TFRC can co-exist fairly with TCP by giving more throughput to TCP unlike UDP.

  • When multiple ZigBee wireless personal area networks (WPANs) are in close proximity to each other, contentions and collisions in transmissions will lead to increased packet delays. However, there is no existing study on how delay performance would be affected in a crowded real-life environment where each person walking down a busy street would be wearing a ZigBee WPAN. This letter studies the use of ZigBee WPANs in such a real-life environment for real-time heart beat monitoring. To be pragmatic, we derived a mobility pattern from the analysis of a real-life video trace. Then, we estimated the delay performance from the video trace by combining data collected from ZigBee experiments. The results show that the 300 ms packet delay requirement will not be met for only 11% of the time. When failure occurs, it will last for an average duration of 1.4 s.

  • Direct-sequence ultra-wideband(DS-UWB) system is being considered as one of promising transmission technologies for wireless personal area networks(WPANs). Due to relatively low spreading factors and huge bandwidth of transmit signal, a DS-UWB receiver needs to be equipped not only with a rake receiver but also with an equalizer, of which the equalizer is not required for traditional direct-sequence code division multiple access(DS-CDMA) systems. The number of rake fingers is limited in practice, influencing the performance of the subsequent equalizer. In this paper, we derive a decision feedback equalizer(DFE) for DS-UWB systems based on the minimum mean square error(MMSE) criterion, and investigate the impact of various parameters on the DFE performance in realistic scenarios. In particular, we propose an approach to improving the performance of the DFE using additional channel estimates for multipaths not combined in the rake receiver, and discuss how the accuracy of channel estimation affects desirable DFE configuration. Moreover, we present simulation results that show the impact of turbo equalization on the DFE performance.
