  • Due to the ease of deployment and the extended coverage, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are gaining popularity and research focus. For example, the routing protocols that enhance the throughput on the WMNs and the link quality measurement schemes are among the popular research topics. However, most of these works assume that the locations of the mesh routers are predetermined. Since the operators in an Indoor mesh network can determine the locations of the mesh routers by themselves, it is essential to the WMN performance for the mesh routers to be initially placed by considering the performance issues. In this paper, we propose a mesh router placement scheme based on genetic algorithms by considering the characteristics of WMNs such as interference and topology. There have been many related works that solve similar problems such as base station placement in cellular networks and gateway node selection in WMNs. However, none of them actually considers the interference to the mesh clients from non-associated mesh routers in determining the locations of the mesh routers. By simulations, we show that the proposed scheme improves the performance by 30-40% compared to the random selection scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a routing protocol for WMNs to provide passengers in public transportation vehicles (e.g., bus and tram) with Internet access service. In order to support end users with a reliable Internet connection despite the mobility of vehicles, we assume that mesh router, called mobile mesh router (MMR), is installed in a vehicle and manages a route to Internet Gateway (IGW). We therefore propose an efficient routing protocol and its routing metric, called ETT-TR, considering trajectory information of vehicle as well as link quality in order to find a route between them. Using NS-2 simulations, we observe that our proposed routing protocol reduces the end-to-end delay and improves throughput performance.

  • Due to its ease of deployment, low cost, self-configuring and self-healing capabilities, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as a key technology to be used in a wide scale applications in personal, local, campus, and metropolitan areas. Security and more specifically privacy is an important issue in this type of multi-hop WMN which has given a little attention in the research community. We focus on privacy compromise of a mesh client in a community mesh network that may lead an attacker to reveal mesh clients identity. his other profiles and gain information about mobility. In this paper. we have presented an authentication mechanism with the aid of blind signature that ensures a mesh client to anonymously authenticate itself with a nearby mesh router and thereby preserve identity privacy We have also presented the security and performance analysis of the proposed scheme.

  • Throughput improvement problem in wireless mesh network can be alleviated by equipped mesh router with multiple radios tuned into orthogonal channels. However, some links on the same channel also can be activated concurrently if the Signal-to-Noise and Interference Ratio (SNIR) at their receiver endpoints is not lower than the threshold. We propose a greedy algorithm to investigate the problem of how to schedule a set of feasible transmission under physical interference model by using the spatial time-division multiple-access (STDMA) scheme. We also consider the fairness in scheduling to prevent some border nodes from starvation. We evaluate our algorithms through extensive simulation and the results show that our algorithms can achieve better aggregate throughput and fairness performance than 802.11 standard.

  • Wireless mesh networks consist of mesh clients, mesh routers and mesh access points. The mesh router connects wireless network services to the mesh client, and the mesh access point connects to the backbone network using a wired link and provides Internet access to the mesh client. In this paper, a limited number of mesh routers and mesh access points are used to propose optimization algorithms for network design for wireless mesh networks. The optimization algorithm in this paper has been applied with a sub-subscription algorithm, which is one of the meta-heuristic methods, and is designed to minimize the transmission delay for the placement of mesh routers and mesh access points, and produce optimal results within a reasonable time. The proposed algorithm was evaluated in terms of transmission delay and time to perform the algorithm for the placement of mesh routers and mesh access points, and the performance evaluation results showed superior performance compared to the previous meta-heuristic methods.

  • In Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN), an authentication technique can be compromised due to the distributed network architecture, the broadcast nature of the wireless medium and dynamic network topology. Several vulnerabilities exist in different protocols for WMNs. Hence, in this paper, we propose trust based authentication and key establishment for secure routing in WMN. Initially, a trust model is designed based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) to exchange the trust information among the nodes. The routing table is utilized to select the destination nodes, for which the link information is updated and the route verification is performed. Based on the trust model, mutual authentication is applied. When a node moves from one operator to another for accessing the router, inter-authentication will be performed. When a node moves within the operator for accessing the router, then intra-authentication will be performed. During authentication, keys are established using identity based cryptography technique. By simulation results, we show that the proposed technique enhances the packet delivery ratio and resilience with reduced drop and overhead.

  • In this paper, a channel assignment technique to mitigate interferences due to ISI(Inter Symbol Interference) and ICI(Inter Carrier Interference) caused by TDoA(Time Difference of Arrival) among distributed MRs(Mesh Routers) in OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access)-based WMN(Wireless Mesh Network) is proposed. The SINR(Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio) associated with the channel assignment for each MR is defined to minimize the effect of ISI and ICI due to TDoA in WMN, which is then used to propose an channel assignment technique considering fairness constraint. It is verified by computer simulation that the proposed channel assignment technique can improve the performance of BER(Bit Error Rate) in WMNs with compared to the conventional technique.

  • Wireless Mesh Networks(WMNs) is generally composed of radio nodes in the mesh topology. WMNs consists of mesh client, mesh router and gateway connected to a wired network. Each client and router relay messages to the gateway for communication. WMNs is widely used recently in many areas can provide extended coverage based on multi-hop communication and ubiquitous communication at any time and any location. However the competition and collision between each node to transmit data is inevitable when the same channel is used for transmission. The transmission opportunities and the throughput of nodes located far from gateway decrease more if the communication channel is accessed based on competitive CSMA/CA scheme using DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) provided by IEEE 802.11 MAC. In this paper, we improve the performance of the TCP fairness and throughput of the nodes with more than 2 hops by applying various algorithms for controlling contention window values. Also, we evaluate the performance using ns-2 simulator, According to the results, proposed scheme can enhance the fairness characteristic of each node irrespective of data to the gateway.

  • Wireless mesh networks contain multi-hop routing protocols between wireless nodes and are connected to the Internet through a gateway. These networks perform a role as a backbone and are scalable for main applications. We propose the design of QoS supporting mechanisms for wireless mesh networks using software defined networking. Our proposed scheme is cost-effective and features adaptive QoS mechanisms for wireless router's resource constraints. The QoS mechanisms use software defined networking technology with Openflow protocol based on diffserv and intserv models with MPLS mechanism and RSVP respectively. A performance evaluation model is suggested to verify the validity of the proposed scheme using several QoSmetrics of the wireless mesh networks.
