This study aims to introduce a new bracing system by which even super-wide frames with large openings can be braced. The proposed system, hereafter called Cable-Pulley Brace (CPB), is a tension-only bracing system with a rectilinear configuration. In CPB, a wire rope passes through a rectilinear path around the opening(s) and connects the lower corner of the frame to its opposite upper one. CPB is a secondary load resisting system with a nonlinear-elastic hysteretic behavior due to its initial pre-tension load. As a result, the required energy dissipation would be provided by the MRF itself, and the main intention of using CPB is to contribute to the initial and post-yield stiffness of the whole system. Using a stiffness calibration technique, optimum placement of the CPBs is discussed to yield a uniform displacement demand along the height of the structure. A displacement-based design procedure is proposed by which the MRF with CPB can be designed to achieve a uniform distribution of inter-story drifts with predefined values. Obtained results indicated that CPB leads to significant reductions in maximum and residual deformations of the MRF at the expense of minor increase in the maximum base shear and developed axial force demands in the columns. In the case of a typical 5-story residential building, compared to SMRF system, CPB system reduces maximum amounts of inter-story and residual drifts by 35% and 70%, respectively. Moreover, openings of the frame are not interrupted by the CPB. This is the most appealing feature of the proposed bracing system from architectural point of view.

The crawler crane, which consists of a lattice boom, a driving system, and movable vehicle, is widely used in a construction site. It needs to be installed an overload limiter to prevent the overturning accident and the fracture of structure. This research is undertaken to provide the relation formula for designing the overload limiter as follows: First the relation formulas between the wire-rope tension and the hoisting load or the overturning ratio according to the luffing angle and length of a lattice boom are established. Secondly the derived formulas are corrected by using the compensated angle considering the deflection of boom through the finite element analysis. The stiffness analysis is carried out for 30-kinds of models as a combination of 6-kinds of luffing angle and 5-kinds of length of boom. Finally the shape design of a stick type load cell, which is the device to measure the wire-rope tension, is performed. 5-kinds of notch radius and 5-kinds of center hole radius are adopted as the design parameter for the strength analysis of the load cell.
In the present study, a new seismic retrofitting method that employs both a stainless steel wire mesh and a permeable polymer concrete mortar was proposed for reinforced concrete bridge piers with nonseismic design details. For this purpose, a total of six nonseismically designed bridge piers were tested under lateral load reversals. The test results reveal that nonseismically designed piers with lap splices need to be retrofitted to resist earthquake induced forces. In addition, it was proven that the proposed retrofitting method can be useful in improving the strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacities of bridge piers designed nonseismically. It is thus expected that the proposed method may provide an improved ductility capacity without sudden softening of strength for bridge piers excursing inelastic displacement range.
Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings are extensively adopted in many of the growing nations, particularly in India. Window or door openings are required for architectural or functional reasons, which pose a threat to the building's safety. The past earthquakes have shown that the seismic capability of these structures was very weak. Strengthening these unreinforced masonry walls using welded wire mesh (WWM) is one of the most commonly and economical methods. The present experimental study investigates the impact of openings on the shear behaviour of URM walls and the effectiveness of WWM in enhancing the shear performance of masonry wall. In the experimental program 16 specimens were cast, 8 unstrengthen and 8 strengthened specimens, under 8 unstrengthen and strengthened specimens, every 2 specimens had 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% openings and all these walls were tested under diagonal compression. The results show that the shear carrying capacity reduces as the opening percentage increases. However, strengthening the URM specimens using WWM significantly improves the peak load, shear strength, ductility, stiffness, and energy dissipation. Furthermore, the strengthening of the URM walls using WWM compensated the loss of wall capacity caused by the presence of the openings.
Coupled structures are widely seen in civil and mechanical engineering. In coupled structures, monitoring the translational motion of its key components is of great importance. For instance, some coupled arms are equipped with a hydraulic piston to provide the stiffness along the piston axial direction. The piston moves back and forth and a distance sensing system is necessary to make sure that the piston is within its stroke limit. The measured motion data also give us insight into how the coupled structure works and provides information for the design optimization. This paper develops two distance sensing systems for coupled structures. The first system measures distance with ultrasonic sensor. It consists of an ultrasonic sensing module, an Arduino interface board and a control computer. The system is then further upgraded to a three-sensor version, which can measure three different sets of distance data at the same time. The three modules are synchronized by the Arduino interface board as well as the self-developed software. Each ultrasonic sensor transmits high frequency ultrasonic waves from its transmitting unit and evaluates the echo received back by the receiving unit. From the measured time interval between sending the signal and receiving the echo, the distance to an object is determined. The second distance sensing system consists of a wire draw encoder, a data collection board and the control computer. Wire draw encoder is an electromechanical device to monitor linear motion by converting a central shaft rotation into electronic pulses of the encoder. Encoder can measure displacement, velocity and acceleration simultaneously and send the measured data to the control computer via the data acquisition board. From experimental results, it is concluded that both the ultrasonic and the wire draw encoder systems can obtain the linear motion of structures in real-time.

Wire-woven Kagome is a kind of Periodic Cellular Metal, which is known to have high strength, stiffness for its weight, and potential for mass production. In this work, we developed a new structure that mimics ${\alpha}$-cristobalite. First, an ordinary wire-woven Kagome was fabricated using metallic wires, and the tetrahedral cells were then filled with metal balls and epoxy. The wire-woven Kagome was transformed to have a negative Poisson's ratio by carrying out a specified amount of initial deformation. The fabrication possibility and kinematic behavior were checked by using FEA simulation. Finally, the mechanical properties were measured using compressive tests.
This paper presents experimental results on the behaviour and ultimate load of fifteen pipes and six roof panels made of ferrocement. Additional results from three roof panels, carried out by others, are also compared with this research results. OPC cement, natural sand and galvanised iron wire mesh were used for the construction of 20 mm thick specimens. The pipe length was 2 m and roof panel length was 2.1 m. The main variables studied were the number of wire mesh layers which were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 layers, the inner pipe diameter which were 105, 210 and 315 mm, cross sectional shape of the panel which were channel and box sections and the depth of the edge beam which were 95 mm and 50 mm. All specimens were simply supported and tested for pure bending with test span of 600 mm at mid-span. Tests revealed that increasing the number of wire mesh layers increases the flexural strength and stiffness. Increasing the pipe diameter or depth of edge beam of the panel increases the cracking and ultimate moments. The change in the pipe diameter led to larger effect on ultimate moment than the effect of change in the number of wire mesh layers. The box section showed behaviour and strength similar to that of the channel with same depth and number of wire mesh layers.
This work proposes structure of spring backbone micro endoscope. For effective surgery in narrow and limited space, many manipulators are developing that different to existed structure. This device can move like elephant nose or snake unlike the existing robots. For this motion, a mechanism that uses spring backbone and wires has been developed. The new type endoscope that has Z axis motion for spring structure, therefore it has 3 degree of freedom, two rotations and one linear motion. And new kinematics for backbone structure is proposed using simple geographic analysis. The Jacobian and stiffness modeling are also derived. Exact actuator sizing is determined using stiffness model. Finally, the proposed kinematics are verified by simulation and experiments.
A cable is considered as a system of helical wires and a core with distributed dry friction forces at their interfaces. Deformations of the cable subjected to a uniform bending are analyzed. It is shown that there is a critical bending curvature when a slip at the wire-core interface occurs. It originates at the neutral axis of the cross section of the cable and then spreads symmetrically over the cross section with the increase of bending. The effect of slippage on the cable stiffness is investigated. This model is also used to analyze a cable under the quasi-static cyclic bending. Explicit expression for the hysteretic losses per cycle of bending is derived. Numerical examples are given to show the influence of dry friction and helix angle on the bending stiffness and hysteretic losses in the cable.
The quasi static test of the steel reinforced concrete (SRC) bridge piers and rigid frame arch bridge structure with SRC piers was conducted in the laboratory, and the seismic performance of SRC piers was compared with that of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers. In the test, the failure process, the failure mechanism, hysteretic curves, skeleton curves, ductility coefficient, stiffness degradation curves and the energy dissipation curves were analyzed. According to the $M-{\Phi}$ relationship of fiber section, the three-wire type theoretical skeleton curve of the lateral force and the pier top displacement was proposed, and the theoretical skeleton curves are well consistent with the experimental curves. Based on the theoretical model, the effects of the concrete strength, axial compression ratio, slenderness ratio, reinforcement ratio, and the stiffness ratio of arch to pier on the skeleton curve were analyzed.
