  • Microbiological and sensory evaluations of chicken wings treated with acetic acid and trisodium phosphate(TSP) during retail(1${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$) and refrigerated storage(4$^{\circ}C$). Chicken wings(average weight of 15${\pm}$2g per leg) were treated with 0.5∼2% aerobic plate counts(APC) on the surface of chicken wings for storage of 16 days at 4$^{\circ}C$. During storage of 12 days at retail store(1${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$), the treating chicken wings with 7.5∼10% TSP solutions for 10 min showed significantly inhibitory effect in preventing the growth of aerobic microbes. For odor and appearance scores, chicken wings treated with 0.5∼2% acetic solutions resembled untreated wings for storage of 16 days at 4$^{\circ}C$. However, both odor and appearance scores of chicken wings treated with 2.5∼10% TSP solutions were similar to those of untreated wings for storage of 4 days, and a higher in the storage of beyond 8 to 12 days at retail store.

  • The wake shapes behind wings in formation flight are very important to the aerodynamics and performances of aircrafts. In the present study, a discrete vortex methood is extended to handle the wake rollups behind multiple wings. It was found that the relative distance between the wings and the rotational direction of the wingtip vortices have significant effect on the movement of the wingtip vortices. When the wings are close to each other, the wingtip vortices moved faster than the wings of large relative distances. The vortex pair of opposite signs generated from each wingtip has an effect of moving the wingtip vortices upward. The relative height between the wings has an effect of moving the wingtips along the centerline of each vortex. The wakeshape behind multiple wings is a function of the relative distances and thus is dependent on the configuration of the formation flight. In the futhre, a study on the vortex movement pattern will be studied.

  • Symbiotic stars are binary systems composed of a hot white dwarf and a mass losing giant. Many symbiotic stars are known to exhibit broad wings around Balmer emission line. We show high resolution spectra of S-type symbiotic stars, Z Andromedae and AG Draconis, obtained with the ESPaDOnS and the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, in which we find prominent broad wings around Balmer lines. We adopt Monte-Carlo technique to consider two types of wing formation mechanisms, which are Thomson scattering by free electron in H II region and Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen in H I region. We find that Thomson wings of $H{\alpha}$ and $H{\beta}$ have the same widths in the Doppler space due to the cross section independent of wavelength. In contrast, Raman $H{\alpha}$ wings are 3 times broader widths than $H{\beta}$ counterparts, which is attributed to the different cross sections and branching ratios. Our CFHT data show that $H{\alpha}$ wings of Z Andromedae and AG Draconis are broader than $H{\beta}$ wings, lending strong support to the Raman scattering origin of Balmer wings in these objects.

  • This study lays emphasis on the development of efficient analytical models for a multistory structure with wings, including the in-plane deformation of floor slabs. For this purpose, a multistory structure with wings is regarded as the combination of multistory structures with rectangular plan and their junctions. In addition, a multistory structure with a rectangular plan is considered to be an assemblage of two-dimensional frames and floor slabs connecting two adjacent frames at each floor level. This modeling, concept can be easily applied to multistory structures with plans in the shape of L, T, Y, U, H, etc. To represent the in-plane deformation of floor slabs efficiently, a two-dimensional frame and the floor slab connecting two adjacent frames at each floor level are modeled as a stick model with two degrees of freedom per floor and a stiff beam with shear deformations, respectively. Three models are used to investigate the effect of in-plane deformation of the floor slab at the junction of wings on the seismic behavior of structures. Based on the comparison of dynamic analysis results obtained using the proposed models and three-dimensional finite element models, it could be concluded that the proposed models can be used as an efficient tool for an approximate analysis of a multistory structure with wings.

  • Antioxidants present in fruits and vegetables have a potential to reduce disease risk, and increase the shelf life of food products by reducing lipid oxidation. The effect of marination with antioxidants-rich fruit juices on quality characteristics of vacuum-packed chicken wings were examined during frozen storage. Chicken wings were mixed separately with marinades containing pineapple juice, June plum juice, and mango juice and kept for 12 h and 24 h. Three best marination conditions were selected based on a sensory evaluation. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of fruit juices, and marinade uptake, and marinade loss of marinated chicken wings were determined. In addition, vacuum packed marinated chicken wings were tested for pH, water holding capacity (WHC), 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value and antioxidant activity over a 4-wk frozen storage. The best sensory properties were reported from chicken wings marinated with pineapple juice for 24 h, mango juice for 24 h, and June plum juice for 12 h (p<0.05) compared to other marinade-time combinations. Mango juice showed the highest antioxidant activity (92.2%) and total phenolic content (38.45 ㎍/mL; p<0.05) compared to other fruit juices. The pH and WHC of vacuumpacked chicken wings were slightly decreased over the frozen storage (p<0.05). Moreover, chicken wings marinated with mango juice had the lowest TBARS values and the highest 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate free radical scavenging activity. In conclusion, mango juice was selected among tested as the most effective marinade for enhancing the oxidative stability of lipid while maintaining the other meat quality traits of vacuum-packed chicken wings.

  • Using a combination of force transducer measurement to quantify net lift force, high frame rate camera to quantify and subtract inertial contributions, and Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) to calculate aerodynamic contributions in the spanwise plane, the contribution of spanwise flow to the generation of lift force in wings undergoing a pure flapping motion in hover is shown as a function of flapping angle throughout the flapping cycle. These experiments were repeated at various flapping frequencies and for various wing planform sizes for flat plate and span wise cambered wings. Despite the previous identification of the importance of span wise fluid structures in the generation of lift force in flapping wings throughout the existing body of literature, the direct contribution of spanwise flow to lift force generated has not previously been quantified. Therefore, in the same manner as commonly applied to investigate the chordwise lift distribution across an airfoil in flapping wings, spanwise flow due to bulk flow and rotational fluid dynamic mechanisms will be investigated to validate the existence of a direct component of the lift force originating from the flapping motion in the spanwise plane instead.

  • Many symbiotic stars exhibit features formed through Raman scattering with hydrogent atom, which can be useful in probing the mass loss and mass transfer processes. These include Raman scattered O VI 6830, 7088, Raman scattered He II 6545, 4850, 4332, and broad wings around Balmer emission lines. In this study we investigate the basic properties of broad Balmer wings formed through Raman scattering using a Monte Carlo technique. Special attention is made on the symmetry of the wings which is expected to be broken due to asymmetric scattering cross section. In this poster, we show preliminary results.

  • Modern clothing is approached in the level of art, and it becomes the means of expressing individuality in modern society uniformed by the development of information society. In this modern society, modern men need the recovery of humanity and expectations of handcrafted skills for the succession of tradition culture. Prior to expressing individuality, we should examine our traditional culture and combine it with western culture. Quit started to be used for practical purpose such as life items, but it is expanded to the fields of art. Used in dress and its ornaments design, quilt is often applied to the addition of aesthetic factors or cubic material feelings by transforming its warming effect. Hereby, this study has a purpose to create high value added modern dross and its ornaments design by expressing the modern clothing is approached in the level of art, and it becomes the means of expressing individuality roe-dimensional characteristics of quilt, and applying the color combination and the surface of butterfly wings to dress and its ornaments design. The following are the results of this study. 1. The concept of quilt started for practical purposes, but it is expanded to decoration in modern times, and it is confirmed that quilt can be variously applied to handcrafted modern design. 2. • Powered by a supermassive black hole, active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are characterized by prominent emission lines including Blamer lines. The unification scheme of AGNs requires the existence of a thick molecular torus that may hide the broad emission line region. In this configuration, it is expected that the far UV radiation from the central engine can be Raman scattered by neutral hydrogen to reappear around Balmer lines which can be identified observationally with broad Balmer wings. Another mechanism that can form Balmer wings is considered by invoking a fast moving medium around the central engine. In this presentation, we produce Balmer wings that are formed through Raman scattering and also those expected from a fast moving emission flow. It is noted that Raman Balmer wings exhibit stronger red part whereas the opposite behavior is seen in the Balmer wings obtained from a fast moving emission flow.
