Interaction of Tip Vortices Generated by a Split Wing

  • To reduce the strength of tip vortex of the fixed wing, a horizontal wing-let splitted into two parts was utilized, and the interaction between vortices generated by these wing-lets was investigated by the hot-wire anemometry. The process of vortex forming and merging was clarified by measurements of velocity vectors and their contours at five downstream cross-sections; 0.05C(chord length), 0.2C, 0.5C, 1.0C and 2.0C. Both vortex-lets formed by each wing-lets rotate counterclockwise and merge into a larger single vortex within a short downstream distance, 0.5C in this case. The strength of the merged tip vortex turned out to become smaller than that of the plain wing tip near the vortex core.

  • A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics and behavior of a wing-tip vortex around a three-dimensional symmetric wing (NACA0015) in the vicinity of the ground. The aerodynamic characteristics and the wing-tip vortex change as a wing approaches the ground as a result of two different phenomena: the ground effect and the Venturi effect. The ground effect increases lift and decreases drag whereas the Venturi effect generates negative lift and increases drag suddenly. A symmetric airfoil experiences both phenomena with respect to changes in the angle of attack. In the case of a NACA0015 airfoil, the Venturi effect is dominant at small angles of attack but the ground effect is dominant at large angles of attack. Interestingly, both phenomena can be observed at the 4 degree of angle of attack. The vortex core moves inside a wing when the wing experiences the Venturi effect, whereas the vortex core moves outward when the wing experiences the ground effect.

Turbulence Kinetic Energy Budgets of Tip Vortex Generated by a Fixed Wing (고정익 끝완류의 난류 운동에너지 분배 특성)

  • The turbulence structure of e. tip vortex generated by e. fixed wing was investigated with the use of two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry. The velocity field, composed of circumferential end axial components, was measured on the vertical section to the vortex trail, located at 2C downstream from the wing tip in the incoming flow condition of $Re=2.24{\times}10^5$. A quasi 3-dimensional measurement technique by use of 2-dimensional LDV system was suggested for Reynolds stresses and the higher moments. The validity of this technique was confirmed with the uncertainty analysis. The budget of the turbulence kinetic energy was analyzed by those results in the radial direction of the vortex core. It is resulted that the production is to be very likely balanced with the dissipation in most range of the vortex core.

Study on the Flow Around an Elliptic Wing Using Flow Visualization Technique (유동가시화를 통한 타원형날개주위 유동연구)

  • This study deals with an investigation on the tip vortex generated by an elliptic wing with section shapes of NACA 0020. The flow structure on the wing surface is investigated by using tufts test as well as observing the cavitation pattern. The surface pressure on a foil surface is measured to complement the visualized flow field. Results show that a strong spanwise pressure gradient is a definite contributor on the formation of tip vorex, and the fluids from both sides contribute to the evolutionary process of tip vortex. On the other hand, a series of experiments are conducted to investigate the detailed structure of tip-vortex at various angles of attack. The tip-vortex formation and development are observed by producing a cavitation, and then by a laser sheet technique in conduction with a dye injection method. The shape of tip-vortex and the distance between a vortex core and the trailing vortex sheet are found to vary with the angle of attack. Overall features of tip flow are evaluated to complement the vortex model based on inviscid theory.

Aerodynamic Interference Effect of Aircraft Wing Tip Vortex in Formation Flight (편대비행상태에서 날개 끝 와류의 공력 간섭 효과)

  • Experimental study was conducted to investigate aerodynamic interference effect of wing tip vortex in formation flight of high speed aircraft. In formation flight, wing tip vortex produced by leading aircraft can affect on the aerodynamic characteristics of trailing aircraft. The interference effect of flow is varied with distances between wing tips of leading and trailing aircraft. It is confirmed, in this study, that the interference of wing tip vortex generated from the leading aircraft makes the aerodynamic forces and moments of the trailing aircraft with the vertical or horizontal positions of the trailing aircraft. Especially, the lift coefficients of trailing aircraft were highly increased at y/b=-0.125, z/b=0.0 or deeply decreased at y/b=-0.5, z/b=0.38. The interfering pattern of wing tip vortices from two aircraft is precisely observed.

Study on Tip-Vortex Cavitation and Its Noise Characteristics - Effects of Surface Roughness - (타원형날개끝 캐비테이션과 유기소음 특성연구 - 표면거칠기의 영향 -)

  • The purpose of present study is to investigate the surface roughness on tip-vortex cavitation and its induced noise, emanating from an elliptic wing of NACA 0012 section. Roughness elements of $200{\mu}m$ are applied to the 10% portion of wing tip, and then, the wing tip as well as the leading edge. It is shown from cavitation observation that the cavitation inception is first visible at about half chord downstream of wing tip for most experimental conditions, and developed into the tip-vortex cavitation and finally the fully developed cavitation as cavitation number is decreased. Acoustic noise generated by a tip-vortex cavitation has its frequency range of 3 kHz to 50 kHz, while the fully-developed cavitation at lower cavitation number induces a broad band spectrum. It is also shown that, when the roughness elements are applied to the wing tip and the leading edge, the cavitation characteristics and its induced noise are improved. Moreover, it is appeared that the condition at which the rough surface is at pressure side gives a better result. although its lift-drag ratio is reduced.

  • Nnumerical investigations of the tip vortical characteristics were conducted with lateral tip blowing to reduce Blade-Vortex Interaction (BVI) noise. The predictions of BVI noise were performed using a combined method of an unsteady Euler code with an aeroacoustic code based on Ffowcs- Williams and Hawkings formulation. A moving overlapped grid system with three types of grids (blade grid, inner and outer background grid) was used to simulate BVI of helicopter with two OLS-airfoil blades in forward/ descending flight condition. The calculated waveform of BVI noise, which is characterized by the distinct peaks caused during blade vortex interaction, clearly shows the effect of lateral blowing at tip to reduce BVI noise

  • In this study, the Eulerian/Lagrangian one-way coupling method is proposed to predict flow noise due to Blade-Tip Vortex Cavitation (BTVC). The proposed method consists of four sequential steps: flow field simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques, reconstruction of wing-tip vortex using vortex model, generation of BTVC using bubble dynamics model and acoustic wave prediction using the acoustic analogy. Because the CFD prediction of tip vortex structure generally suffers from severe under-prediction of its strength along the steamwise direction due to the intrinsic numerical damping of CFD schemes and excessive turbulence intensity, the wing-tip vortex along the freestream direction is regenerated by using the vortex modeling. Then, the bubble dynamics model based on the Rayleigh-Plesset equation was employed to simulate the generation and variation of BTVC. Finally, the flow noise due to BTVC is predicted by modeling each of spherical bubbles as a monople source whose strength is proportional to the rate of time-variation of bubble volume. The validity of the proposed numerical methods is confirmed by comparing the predicted results with the measured data.

Study on visualization of vortex flow on hydrofoils (수중익에서 발생하는 보텍스 유동 가시화 연구)

  • In order to design a propeller with high efficiency and excellent cavitation performance, theoretical and experimental studies on the cavitation and noise characteristics according to the blade section shape are essential. In general, sheet cavitation, bubble cavitation, and cloud cavitation are the main causes of hull vibration and propeller surface erosion. However vortex cavitation, which has the greatest influence on the noise level because the fastest CIS in ship propeller, has been researched for a long time and studies have been conducted recently to control it. In this experiment, the development process of cavitation was measured by using three dimensional wings with two different wing section and wing tip shapes, and the noise level at that time was evaluated. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between cavitation inception and hydrodynamic force using three component load cell and we measured the velocity field of wing wake using LDV.

  • To improve the aerodynamic efficiency of Smart Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (SUAV), vortex generators and flow fence are applied on the surface and the tip of wing. The initially applied vortex generator increased maximum lift coefficient and delayed the stall angle while it produced excessive increase in drag coefficient. It turns out reduction of the airplane's the lift/drag ratio. The new vortex generators with L-shape and two different height, 3mm and 5mm, were used to TR-S4 configuration to maintain the desired level of maximum lift coefficient and drag coefficient. Flow fence was also applied at the end of both wing tip to reduce the interaction between nacelle and wing when nacelle tilting angles are large enough and produce flow separation. To examine the effect of flow fence, flow visualization and force and moment measurements were done. The variation of the aerodynamic characteristics of SUAV after applying flow control devices are summarized.
