The superconducting synchronous generator is one of the breakthrough elements for direct-drive wind turbines because it is light and small. Normally the superconducting one has copper armature windings in the stator and superconducting field windings on the rotor. The high resistance of the armature can make large copper losses, comparing with the conventional generators with a gear box. One of the solutions for the large copper losses could be a fully superconducting generator. But the high magnetic fields from the superconducting field windings on the rotor also make high perpendicular magnetic fields on the superconducting tapes in the armature windings. We have proposed a fully superconducting synchronous generator with dual field windings. It could immensely decrease the circumferential component of the magnetic field from the field windings at the armature windings. In this paper, we conceptually designed 3 types of superconducting synchronous generators. The first one is the fully superconducting one with conventional structure, which has superconducting armature windings in the stator and superconducting field windings on the rotor. The second one is the one with dual superconducting field windings and superconducting armature windings between them. The last one is the same as the third one except the structure of the armature. If the concentrated armature windings are superconducting ones with cryostats, then they cannot be installed within the span of 2 poles. So, we adopted 3 phases windings within 4 poles system. It makes more AC losses but can be manufactured really.

The development of a magnet for very high magnetic field is usually envisioned with the use of an HTS insert coil. Pancake windings have been commonly used for the insert coil. All pancake windings have been connected in series and excited by a single power source. In that case, it is inevitable to operate some of the pancake windings well below their critical current densities. To increase the central magnetic field of the magnet, this paper proposed a new excitation method of the pancake windings by exciting the pancakes windings independently using multiple power sources. Results of the calculation show proposed method increases the central magnetic field of the magnet which consisted of 8 pancake windings by 17% comparing with excitation by using a single power source.

Diagnostic tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stator windings in traction motor. These tests included ac current, tan delta and maximum partial discharge. The insulation condition of stator windings was assessed by three test items. The stator windings of traction motor were m good condition. After completing the diagnostic tests, the stator windings of traction motors were subjected to gradually increasing ac voltage, until the insulation punctured. No.5 stator windings failed near rated voltage of 18.9 kV. The breakdown voltage of No.1 stator windings was 13.0. The failure was located m a line-end coil at the exit from the core slot.

Diagnostic, surge and ac breakdown tests are widely used to evaluate the insulation condition of stator winding in traction motor. Diagnostic test included ac current, tan delta and maximum partial discharge. The result of diagnostic test indicates that five kinds of stator windings are good condition. Surge test was peformed to confirm the healthy of turn insulation in stator windings. This test is very easy to detect the turn insulation failure between normal and defect stator windings. After completing the diagnostic test, ac breakdown test has conducted gradually increasing ac voltage, until the stator winding punctured. No. 5 stator windings failed near rated voltage of 18.9 kV The breakdown voltage of No. 1 stator windings was 13.0 kV The ac breakdown voltage of normal winding is about 1.45 times higher than that of defect windings. The failure was located in a line-end coil at the exit from the core slot.
Nondestructive tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stator windings in rotating machine. These tests included ac current, tan delta and maximum partial discharge. The insulation condition of stator windings was assessed by three test items. The stator windings were generally in good condition, wash, reimpregnation and rewind. It was confirmed that nondestructive tests were most useful method to indicate the insulation condition of stator windings.
The detection and measurement of partial discharge activity prevalent in the solid insulating systems of high-voltage generator stator windings has, for many years, been a recognized method of assessing the insulation condition of such systems. Partial discharge activity occurs at sites of degradation within, or at the surface of, stator's insulation systems under high voltage stressing. However, partial discharge pulses suffer from attenuation and distortion when transmitted along windings, because of the complex L-C network between windings. The mode of transmission varies with the signal frequency and is dependant on the geometrical configurations of windings. This paper reports the investigated results of the signal propagation characteristics along the windings when both sinusoidal signals and simulated partial discharge pulses are injected at the various positions of stator windings within the 25 MVA, 11 kV hydro generator. The on-line identification technique of partial discharge location in generator windings is also proposed in this study.

For reduction of the amount of CO2 emitted from ships, power generation characteristics of two power generation systems consisting of a high-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous generator and diode bridge rictifiers are discussed in this paper. One of the discussed systems has three-phase stator windings, and the other has two sets of three-phase (six-phase) stator windings to reduce pulsation in the electromagnetic torque and DC current. Experimental results reveal that the power generation efficiency of the system having six-phase stator windings is higher than that of the system having three-phase stator windings for a light load. The maximum power generation efficiency of the system having six-phase stator windings is almost the same as that of the system having three-phase stator windings. For the electromagnetic torque of the system having six-phase stator windings, the width of pulsation is about one-fifth compared to the system having three-phase stator windings.
In order to evaluate the insulation deterioration in the stator windings of five gas turbine generators(137 MVA, 13.8 kV) which has been operated for more than 13 years, diagnostic test and AC dielectric breakdown test were performed at phases A, B and C. These tests included measurements of AC current, dissipation factor, partial discharge (PD) magnitude and capacitance. ${\Delta}I$ and ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$ in all three phases (A, B and C) of No. 1 generator stator windings showed that they were in good condition but PD magnitude indicated marginally serviceable and bad level to the insulation condition. Overall analysis of the results suggested that the generator stator windings were indicated serious insulation deterioration and patterns of the PD in all three phases were analyzed to be internal, slot and spark discharges. After the diagnostic test, an AC overvoltage test was performed by gradually increasing the voltage applied to the generator stator windings until electrical insulation failure occurred, in order to determine the breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage at phases A, B and C of No. 1 generator stator windings failed at 28.0 kV, 17.9 kV, and 21.3 kV, respectively. The breakdown voltage was lower than that expected for good-quality windings (28.6 kV) in a 13.8kV class generator. In the AC dielectric breakdown and diagnostic tests, there was a strong correlation between the breakdown voltage and the voltage at which charging current increases abruptly ($P_{i1}$, $P_{i2}$).

When the stator windings of 3 phase induction motors are in wrong condition, the mutual inductive responses between windings can be utilized for the purpose of diagnosing motors in that fault windings affect even the responses by DC excitation. Three phase induction motors are supposed to generate consistent inductive voltages at the remaining windings when exciting DC current is given to one of 3 windings, while the inconsistence of their voltages indicates the existence of disorder at electric motors. This study describes how the exciting current to one of three windings cause the other windings to create induced voltages, analyzing responses by transfer functions, and discloses whether or not the balance relation at two windings is normal in the way of measuring the differential voltage of their outputs. For experiment, common analog multi-testers is used for applying exciting current and measuring the output signal to confirm whether the proposed method is useful enough to be able to discriminate wrong polarities of windings onboard vessels including also the case of exciting current by AC.

High temperature superconducting (HTS) windings for an HTS transformer which have been developed have two kinds of type, one is the layer winding and the other is disk winding. The layer winding has adopted for an HTS power transformer so far because of the small AC losses of the HTS windings. The disk windings have surface of the HTS wire. We propose a new winding method for a high voltage HTS transformer which has advantages of both type of HTS windings, and we call it continuous disk winding. This new HTS winding consists of pile of HTS disk windings. The continuous disk winding was fabricated with multi-stacked HTS wires for dover HTS transformer. We can check the potential possibility from the characteristic test of the fabricated winding. The new type HTS windings can be applied to HTS power transformers, especially to the high voltage ones.
