  • Recently, more attention has been paid to the development of high-speed permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motors, since they are conductive to high efficiency, high power density, small size, and low weight. In high-speed PM machines, core loss and windage loss form a larger proportion of the total losses than usual in conventional mid- or low speed machines. This article deals with the analysis on the core loss and windage loss in PM synchronous motor for high-speed application. Using the data information from a manufacturer and non-linear curve fitting, this paper investigates the magnetic behavior and its core losses in the stator core using the electrical steels. And, the windage loss is calculated according to the variation of the rotational speed, motor inner pressure and temperature.

  • This paper measured and analyzed the source of total power loss of an ODD of a notebook computer. It shows that the biggest power loss is the windage loss due to the friction between rotating disk and surrounding air. It measured the power loss by the tilting motion of a rotating disc which is originated from the unbalanced mass of the rotating disc or the squareness between case-rotor and shaft. The power loss of rotating disc due to tilting motion was also calculated by using FLUENT, and it was correlated with the measured one. This paper shows that the one of the effective methods to reduce the power loss of an ODD is to reduce the tilting motion of a rotating disc.

  • The fundamental fluid mechanics associated with the rotation of a smooth plane disk enclosed within a cylindrical chamber have been studied experimentally. In order to acquire systematic information pertinent to this problem torque and friction loss data were obtained over a wide range of disk Reynolds numbers for axial clearance-disk radius ratio H/R from 0.025 to 0.2 and radial tip gap-disk radius ratio s/R from 0.021 to 0.105. Loss analysis of hard disk drive (HDD) is presented to describe the contribution of windage loss of a rotating disk. The minimum loss form factor of HDD can be obtained from this analysis at each operation conditions.

Experimental Works and Power Loss Calculations of Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Machines

  • Surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) machines were examined experimentally and theoretically, through power loss measurements and calculations. Windage, friction and copper losses were calculated using simple analytical equations and finite element (FE) analyses. Stator core losses were calculated by determining core loss coefficients through curve-fitting and magnetic behavior analysis through non-linear FE calculations. Rotor eddy current losses were calculated using FE analyses that considered the time harmonics of phase current according to load. Core, windage and friction open-circuit losses and copper loss were determined experimentally to test the validity of the analyses.

  • 축류형 터빈이 부분분사에 의하여 작동하는 경우에 성능을 예측하는 모델을 개발하였다. 부분분사에 의하여 작동하는 터빈에서 발생되어지는 손실을 windage 손실, 확산손실, 혼합손실로 분류하여 각각의 모델을 적용하여 효율을 예측하였으며 실험의 결과와 비교하였다. 타 모델과는 달리 세 가지의 손실을 모두 고려한 본 연구의 결과가 실험결과와 잘 일치하고 있음을 보였으며 부분 분사량을 변경한 경우에도 실험결과와 일치된 결과를 보였다. 본 연구의 예측모델은 부분분사 터빈의 성능을 예측하는데 적용 되어질 뿐만 아니라 높은 예측정확도를 보였다.

  • The rotational loss is one of the most important problems for the practical applications of PM synchronous motor/generator. This rotational loss is divided as the mechanical loss by windage and bearing and iron loss by hysteresis loop and eddy current in the part of the magnetic field. So, In this paper, a double-sided PMSM/G without the iron loss is designed by analytical method of the magnetic field and estimation of the back-EMF constant represented as the design parameter. This design model consists of the double-sided PM rotor with Halbach magnetized array and coreless 3-phase winding stator. The results show that the double-sided PMSM/G without iron loss can be applicable to the required system without the rotational loss.

  • The precise and reliable loss model for induction motor and converter system is very important in order to predict the efficiency performance of variable speed drives. This paper proposes an accurate loss model of induction motor and converter system. The motor losses, such as stator and rotor copper loss, core loss and stray loss, are considered for fundamental and harmonic frequencies. Also considered are the skin effect on rotor resistance, temperature effect on bath stator and rotor resistance, magnetizing inductance saturation, and friction and windage loss. All the above features are incorporated in a synchronous frame dynamic d-q equivalent circuit. The converter system, consisting of a diode rectifier and PWM transistor inverter, is modeled accurately for conduction and switching losses. Validity of the models, in both steady state and transient conditions, is verified by simulations.

This rotational loss is divided as the mechanical loss by windage and bearing and iron loss by hysteresis loop and eddy current in the part of the magnetic field.   • For axial-type turbines which operate at partial admission, a performance prediction model is developed. In this study, losses generated within the turbine are classified to windage loss, expansion loss and mixing loss. The developed loss model is compared with experimental results. Particularly, if a turbine operates at a very low partial admission rate, a circular-type nozzle is more efficient than a rectangular-type nozzle. For this case, a performance prediction model is developed and an experiment is conducted with the circular-type nozzle. The predicted result is compared with the measured performance, and the developed model quite well agrees with the experimental results. So the developed model could be applied to predict the performance of axial-type turbines which operate at various partial admission rates or with different nozzle shape.
