In case of studied area located around the sea, the data measured from the regional meteorological office is highly different from the local weather data because the diffusivity of fugitive dust varies considerably with meteorological conditions. Especially, it is very difficult to predict the amount of fugitive dust accurately as wind speed remains high frequently. In this study, the fluxes of suspended particulates as a function of the friction velocity were applied to consider the effect of wind speed on the amount of fugitive dust generated from the reclamation site. The amount of fugitive dust estimated as mentioned above was simulated by using ISCST3 model. As a result, in case of using only the Fugitive Dust Formula which is usually used in Environment Impact Assessment, the predicted $PM_{10}$ concentrations with points were $43.4{\sim}67.8{\mu}g/m^3$. However, in case of applying to the flux of suspended particulates, the predicted values of $PM_{10}$ with points were $43.3{\sim}69.1{\mu}g/m^3$, $49.5{\sim}90.4{\mu}g/m^3$ and $76.0{\sim}182.6{\mu}g/m^3$ with the wind speeds of 4.4, 5.8 and 7.7m/s, respectively. It could be possible to predict the amount of fugitive dust accurately because these predicted values were similar to the measured values. Consequently, we can establish alternatives for reduction of fugitive dust in this area damaged by fugitive dust which is caused by wind.

Various anti-scattering agents for suppression of dust scattering at waste depository were compared in this study. Based on the price, easy of usage, and no toxicity, 1% of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ was selected as surface hardening agents. Only lower than 2% of total weight were flied when wind speed was monthly maximum velocity during 1 hr. These results were quite good with comparison of S anti-scattering agents which was made by C company in Korea. When $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ was spread, the surface waste became hard therefore the effect of suppression of scattering dust was long lasting. It was recommend that 2% of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ was spread to keep suppression of scattering dust when sudden gust of wind such as natural disaster was occurred.
In coastal residential communities, especially along the coastline, flooding is a frequent natural hazard that impacts the area. To reduce the adverse effects of flooding, it is recommended to elevate coastal buildings to a certain safe level. However, post storm damage assessment has revealed severe damages sustained by elevated buildings' components such as roofs, walls, and floors. By elevating a structure and creating air gap underneath the floor, the wind velocity increases and the aerodynamics change. This results in varying wind loading and pressure distribution that are different from their slab on grade counterparts. To fill the current knowledge gap, a large-scale aerodynamic wind testing was conducted at the Wall of Wind experimental facility to evaluate the wind pressure distribution over the surfaces of a low-rise gable roof single-story elevated house. The study considered three different stilt heights. This paper presents the observed changes in local and area averaged peak pressure coefficients for the building surfaces of the studied cases. The aerodynamics of the elevated structures are explained. Comparisons are done with ASCE 7-16 and AS/NZS 1170.2 wind loading standards. For the floor surface, the study suggests a wind pressure zoning and pressure coefficients for each stilt height.
In recent years, the quality of the outdoor thermal environment has come to be regarded as important as that of the indoor thermal environment. Since the outdoor thermal environment is composed of many elements and is affected by many factors, it is not easy to evaluate the impact of each factor separately. Hence, a comprehensive assessment method is required. In order to evaluate the pedestrian level comfort of an outdoor climate, it is necessary to investigate not only wind velocity but also various physical elements, such as temperature, moisture, radiation, etc. Prediction of wind and thermal environment for a large scale buildings is one of the most important targets for research. Wind and thermal change in a city area is a very complicated phenomenon affected by many physical processes. The purpose of this study is to develop a design plan for wind environment at a large Buildings. In this study, we analyze outdoor wind environment and thermal environment on buildings using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. The arrangement of building models is an apartment in Jeonju. These prediction of wind and thermal environment for a large scale buildings is necessary in a plan before a building is built.

Wind energy is one of the promising renewable energies that could provide electricity and other mechanical power. Wind energy market is dramatically growing in many European countries, but wind power is only 0.2% of the total renewable energy uses that is only about 2% of the primary energy consumption in Korea. It is widely accepted that wind resources fur power generation are only limited in some areas including coastal regions and mountainous areas in Gangwon province in Korea, particularly in terms of large scale wind power developments. In this study, wind velocity data were analyzed with respect to the potential utilization. The data provided from National Weather Service were used for the analysis. In addition, field wind data were also collected and analyzed for the comparison between the national data. The comparison showed that there were significant differences between the experimental station and the national station that are about 5km away. Annual average wind speed at the experimental station was less than 2 m/s, which is not enough fur wind power generation. It seemed that the topographic condition resulted in a significant difference in wind speed. When 600 W and 2.5 kW wind turbines were used, annual power productions were only 186 kWh and 598 kWh, respectively. When the average wind speed is lower, wind pumping is an alternative use of wind. At the experimental station, the average pumping rate of $3m^3/h$ at the head of 3 m was expected at a 2.5 m rotor under the conditions that efficiencies of the rotor and the pump were 40% and 80%, respectively. It did not seem that the wind pumping was not applicable at the station either. A higher wind speed was required to install the wind machines. Meanwhile, wind pumping would be applicable in conditions with lower pumping heads. Other applications were introduced far further wind energy utilization, including wind powered ventilation and friction heat generation in greenhouses.
The world is facing environmental problem described as climate change and exhaustion of fossil fuel. In order to solve theses problems, importance of renewable energy is extremely growing. For stable energy supply, it is need to apply hybrid renewable energy systems in urban-scale, because some renewable energy system' outputs are greatly influenced by climatic condition. Especially, solar irradiation and wind velocity are influenced by urban geometric environment as well as climatic condition. Therefore it is necessary to evaluate the renewable energy potential according as urban form. This study aims to evaluate the potential of solar energy and wind energy in urban-scale and classify urban type according as characteristics of urban forms. The results of this study will be used to develop renewable energy system application guidelines for urban and energy planning.

The scour risk assessment was conducted for ultimate limit state of newly developed penta pod suction bucket support structures for a 5.5 MW offshore wind turbine. The hazard was found by using an empirical formula for scour depth suitable for considering marine environmental conditions such as significant wave height, significant wave period, and current velocity. The scour fragility curve was calculated by using allowable bearing capacity criteria of suction foundation. The scour risk was assessed by combining the scour hazard and the scour fragility.
Most factories deal with toxic or flammable chemicals in their industrial processes. These hazardous substances pose a risk of leakage due to accidents, such as fire and explosion. In the event of chemical release, massive casualties and property damage can result; hence, quantitative risk prediction and assessment are necessary. Several methods are available for evaluating chemical dispersion in the atmosphere, and most analyses are considered neutral in dispersion models and under far-field wind condition. The foregoing assumption renders a model valid only after a considerable time has elapsed from the moment chemicals are released or dispersed from a source. Hence, an initial dispersion model is required to assess risk quantitatively and predict the extent of damage because the most dangerous locations are those near a leak source. In this study, the dispersion model for initial consequence analysis was developed with three-dimensional unsteady advective diffusion equation. In this expression, instantaneous leakage is assumed as a puff, and wind velocity is considered as a coordinate transform in the solution. To minimize the buoyant force, ethane is used as leaked fuel, and two different diffusion coefficients are introduced. The calculated concentration field with a molecular diffusion coefficient shows a moving circular iso-line in the horizontal plane. The maximum concentration decreases as time progresses and distance increases. In the case of using a coefficient for turbulent diffusion, the dispersion along the wind velocity direction is enhanced, and an elliptic iso-contour line is found. The result yielded by a widely used commercial program, ALOHA, was compared with the end point of the lower explosion limit. In the future, we plan to build a more accurate and general initial risk assessment model by considering the turbulence diffusion and buoyancy effect on dispersion.
The use of wind energy resources is developing rapidly in recent decades. There is an increasing number of wind farms in high wind-velocity areas such as the Pacific Rim regions. Wind turbine towers are vulnerable to tropical cyclones and tower failures have been reported in an increasing number in these regions. Existing post-disaster failure case studies were mostly performed through forensic investigations and there are few numerical studies that address the collapse mode simulation of wind turbine towers under strong wind loads. In this paper, the wind-induced failure analysis of a conventional 65 m hub high 1.5-MW wind turbine was carried out by means of nonlinear response time-history analyses in a detailed finite element model of the structure. The wind loading was generated based on the wind field parameters adapted from the cyclone boundary layer flow. The analysis results indicate that this particular tower fails due to the formation of a full-section plastic hinge at locations that are consistent with those reported from field investigations, which suggests the validity of the proposed numerical analysis in the assessment of the performance of wind-farms under cyclonic winds. Furthermore, the numerical simulation allows to distinguish different failure stages before the dynamic collapse occurs in the proposed wind turbine tower, opening the door to future research on the control of these intermediate collapse phases.
In wind-resistant designs, wind velocity is assumed to be a Gaussian process; however, local complex topography may result in strong non-Gaussian wind features. This study investigates the non-Gaussian wind features over complex terrain under atmospheric turbulent boundary layers by the large eddy simulation (LES) model, and the turbulent inlet of LES is generated by the consistent discretizing random flow generation (CDRFG) method. The performance of LES is validated by two different complex terrains in Changsha and Mianyang, China, and the results are compared with wind tunnel tests and onsite measurements, respectively. Furthermore, the non-Gaussian parameters, such as skewness, kurtosis, probability curves, and gust factors, are analyzed in-depth. The results show that the LES method is in good agreement with both mean and turbulent wind fields from wind tunnel tests and onsite measurements. Wind fields in complex terrain mostly exhibit a left-skewed Gaussian process, and it changes from a softening Gaussian process to a hardening Gaussian process as the height increases. A reduction in the gust factors of about 2.0%-15.0% can be found by taking into account the non-Gaussian features, except for a 4.4% increase near the ground in steep terrain. This study can provide a reference for the assessment of extreme wind loads on structures in complex terrain.
