The fatigue load of a turbine blade has become more important because the size of commercial wind turbines has increased dramatically in the past 30 years. The reduction of the fatigue load can result in an increase in operational efficiency. This paper numerically investigates the load reduction of large wind turbine blades using active aerodynamic load control devices, namely trailing edge flaps. The PD and LQG controllers are used to determine the trailing edge flap angle; the difference between the root bending moment and its mean value during turbulent wind conditions is used as the error signal of the controllers. By numerically analyzing the effect of the trailing edge flaps on the wind turbines, a reduction of 30-50% in the standard deviation of the root bending moment was achieved. This result implies a reduction in the fatigue damage on the wind turbines, which allows the turbine blade lengths to be increased without exceeding the designed fatigue damage limit.
In this paper the principles and structure of a WTS (Wind Turbine Simulator) are described. The proposed WTS is a versatile system specially designed for the purpose of developing and testing new control strategies for wind energy conversion systems. The simulator includes two sub-systems; a torque controller which controls a 3-phase induction motor in order to simulate the wind turbine and wind speed generator which can simulate an actual wind speed. In order to make the proposed system working in real-time, two sub-systems are incorporated into one simulink block by using Real-time workshop. The performance of the proposed system is verified by considering various wind speeds.

This paper describes the dynamic performance of a variable speed wind turbine system responding to a wide variety of wind variations. Modeling of the wind generation using power electronics interface is proposed for dynamic simulation analysis. Component models and equations are addressed and their incorporations into a transient analysis program, PSCAD/EMTDC are provided. A wind model of four components is described, which enables observing dynamic behaviors of the wind turbine resulting from wind variations. Controllable power inverter strategies are intended for capturing the maximum power under variable speed operation and maintaining reactive power generation at a pre-determined level for constant power factor control or voltage regulation control. The components and control schemes are modeled by user-defined functions. Simulation case studies provide variable speed wind generator dynamic performance for changes in wind speed
10kW wind turbine has been successfully commissioned at the King Sejong station in April, 2006. The wind turbine installed is a part of the R&D program for developing a solid wind/diesel hybrid power control system for a remote area such as Antarctica. At the same time, the current research aims to develop an anti-icing and de-icing technologies for a small wind turbine rated under 50kW. Since its commissioning, the turbine has generated about 500kWh for 47days without any system faults. Although sufficient data have not been obtained yet, any trouble has not occurred in the wind/diesel hybrid system based on the current analysis. Concerning on the environmental impact by the wind turbine operation, the turbine is installed within the station boundary in order to meet the Madrid protocol. Therefore, wind turbine operation meets the international requirements for preservation of antarctic ecosystem.
Variable loads along the drive-train are attributed to frequent failures of gears, bearings, and other components. Wind parameters cannot be controlled and therefore any turbine load-reducing remedies must be established based on proper insights into the wind-turbine interactions. A novel control concept to performance optimization of wind turbines is presented. This proposed concept is based on analysis of the turbine status reflected in the SCADA data. Modern computational techniques are used to optimize performance of a wind turbine from tree basic perspectives: drive-train, power output, and power quality. The proposed approach demonstrates that gains in the metrics representing the three perspectives and the corresponding control goals can be significantly improved for any wind turbine. The solution is applicable different turbine types operating in different wind regimes, e.g., winds of different speeds and variability. Simple and transparent parameters allow an operator to determine a balance between the operations and maintenance, technical, business objectives. The proposed modeling framework was embedded in software. The software tool has been tested on the data collected from 1.5 MW wind turbines.
In the variable-speed wind energy system, to achieve maximum power point tracking (MPPT), the wind turbine should run close to its optimal angular speed according to the wind speed. Non-linear control methods that consider the dynamic behavior of wind speed are generally used to provide maximum power and improved efficiency. In this perspective, the mechanical power is estimated using Kalman filter. And then, from the estimated mechanical power, the wind speed is estimated with Newton-Raphson method to achieve maximum power without anemometer. However, the blade shape and air density get changed with time and the generator efficiency is also degraded. This results in incorrect estimation of wind speed and MPPT. It causes not only the power loss but also incorrect wind resource assessment of site. In this paper, the adaptive maximum power point tracking control algorithm for wind turbine system based on the estimation of wind speed is proposed. The proposed method applies correction factor to wind turbine system to have accurate wind speed estimation for exact MPPT. The proposed method is validated with numerical simulations and the results show an improved performance.
Pitch control of wind turbine is activated above rated wind speed for the purpose of rated power regulation. When we design pitch controller, its gain-scheduling is essential due to nonlinear characteristics of aerodynamic torque. In this study, 2-mass model including a vibration mode of drive-train for a 2 MW wind turbine is considered and pitch control with gain-scheduling using a linearization analysis of the nonlinear aerodynamic torque is applied. Some simulation results for the pitch gain-scheduling under step wind speed are presented and investigated. It is shown that gain-scheduling in pitch control is important especially in the region of high wind speeds when there exists a vibration mode of drive-train.
To effectively extract the vast wind resource, offshore wind turbines are designed with large rotor and slender tower, which makes them vulnerable to external vibration sources such as wind and wave loads. Substantial research efforts have been devoted to mitigate the unwanted vibrations of offshore wind turbines to ensure their serviceability and safety in the normal working condition. However, most previous studies investigated the vibration control of wind turbines in one direction only, i.e., either the out-of-plane or in-plane direction. In reality, wind turbines inevitably vibrate in both directions when they are subjected to the external excitations. The studies on both the in-plane and out-of-plane vibration control of wind turbines are, however, scarce. In the present study, the NREL 5 MW wind turbine is taken as an example, a detailed three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element (FE) model of the wind turbine is developed in ABAQUS. To simultaneously control the in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations induced by the combined wind and wave loads, another carefully designed (i.e., tuned) spring and dashpot are added to the perpendicular direction of each Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) system that is used to control the vibrations of the tower and blades in one particular direction. With this simple modification, a bi-directional TMD system is formed and the vibrations in both the out-of-plane and in-plane directions are simultaneously suppressed. To examine the control effectiveness, the responses of the wind turbine without control, with separate TMD system and the proposed bi-directional TMD system are calculated and compared. Numerical results show that the bi-directional TMD system can simultaneously control the out-of-plane and in-plane vibrations of the wind turbine without changing too much of the conventional design of the control system. The bi-directional control system therefore could be a cost-effective solution to mitigate the bi-directional vibrations of offshore wind turbines.
The introduction of renewable energy sources into the AC grid can change and weaken the strength of the grid, which will in turn affect the stability and robustness of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind farm. When integrated with weak grids, the DFIG wind turbine with vector power control often suffers from poor performance and robustness, while the DFIG wind turbine with synchronized control provides better stability. This paper investigates the critical short circuit ratios of DFIG wind turbine with vector power control and synchronized control, to analyze the stability boundary of the DFIG wind turbine. Frequency domain methods based on sensitivity and complementary sensitivity of transfer matrix are used to investigate the stability boundary conditions. The critical capacity of DFIG wind farm with conventional vector power control at a certain point of common coupling (PCC) is obtained and is further increased by employing synchronized control properly. The stability boundary is validated by electromagnetic transient simulation of an offshore wind farm connected to a real regional grid.
Control of pitch angle of turbine blades is among the controlling methods in the wind turbines; this measure is taken for managing mechanical power generated by wind turbine in different wind velocities. Taking into account the high significance of the power generated by wind turbine and due to the fact that better performance of pitch angle is followed by better quality of turbine-generated power, it is therefore crucially important to optimize the performance of this controller. In the current paper, a PI controller is primarily used to control the pitch angle, and then another controller is designed and replaces PI controller through applying a new strategy i.e. alternating two ADALINE neural networks. According to simulation results, performance of controlling system improves in terms of response speed, response ripple, and ultimately, steady tracing error. The highly significant feature of the proposed intelligent controller is the considerable stability against variations of wind velocity and system parameters.
