This paper proposes a modeling and controller design approach for a wind-diesel hybrid system including dump load. Wind turbine depends on nature such as wind speed. It causes power fluctuations of wind turbine. Excessive power fluctuation at stand-alone power grid is even worse than large-scale power grid. The proposed control scheme for power quality is fuzzy PI controller. This controller has advantages of PI and fuzzy controller. The proposed model is carried out by using Matlab/Simulink simulation program. In the simulation study, the proposed controller is compared with a conventional PI controller. Simulation results show that the proposed controller is more effective against disturbances caused by wind speed and load variation than the PI controller, and thus it contributes to a better quality wind-diesel hybrid power system.
This study focuses on an advanced second-order sliding mode control strategy for a variable speed wind turbine based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator to maximize wind power extraction while simultaneously reducing the mechanical stress effect. The control design based on a modified version of the super-twisting algorithm with variable gains can be applied to the cascaded system scheme comprising the current control loop and speed control loop. The proposed control inheriting the well-known robustness of the sliding technique successfully deals with the problems of essential nonlinearity of wind turbine systems, the effects of disturbance regarding variation on the parameters, and the random nature of wind speed. In addition, the advantages of the adaptive gains and the smoothness of the control action strongly reduce the chatter signals of wind turbine systems. Finally, with comparison with the traditional super-twisting algorithm, the performance of the system is verified through simulation results under wind speed turbulence and parameter variations.
The numerical simulation optimized by Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA) with Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) data is carried out to evaluate wind resource characteristics at various heights in the southeastern area of the Korean Peninsula, where wind farms are planned to be built on on- and off-shore as well as comparable diurnal wind variations are characterized at the surface. The temporal and spatial distributions of modeled wind speeds showed good agreement with the observations based on the temporal variation analysis. Model results indicate that the higher model is performed in resolution, the more precise results is at turbine hub height. Occasionally, wind speed variations for each numerical resolution has a different regional and seasonal variations. In the coast area, hub height wind speed of 9km-resolution is simillar to that of 3km-resolution. On the other hand, hub height wind speed of 3km-resolution is simillar to that of 1km-resolution in the Jiri mountainous area.
This study calculated wind speed at the height of 10 m using a disaster prediction model(Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model, FPHLM) that was developed and used in the United States. Using its distributions, a usable information of surface wind was produced for the purpose of disaster prevention when the typhoon attack. The advanced research version of the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) was used in this study, and two domains focusing on South Korea were determined through two-way nesting. A horizontal time series and vertical profile analysis were carried out to examine whether the model provided a resonable simulation, and the meteorological factors, including potential temperature, generally showed the similar distribution with observational data. We determined through comparison of observations that data taken at 700 hPa and used as input data to calculate wind speed at the height of 10 m for the actual terrain was suitable for the simulation. Using these results, the wind speed at the height of 10 m for the actual terrain was calculated and its distributions were shown. Thus, a stronger wind occurred in coastal areas compared to inland areas showing that coastal areas are more vulnerable to strong winds.

This paper presents the simulation modeling and analysis of variable wind speed turbine system(VWTS) using the doubly fed induction generator(DFIG) connected the back to back converter system in the rotor side. In the simulation, using the model system which has the 660[kW] rated power, blade control and the dual converter system are modeled for verifying the control characteristics. The VWTS is controlled by the optimal pitch angle for maximum output power under the rated wind speed, and for the rated output power over the rated wind speed. And also power factor is controlled by the reactive power. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulation results are compared with the actual data from the V47 VWTS located in Hangwon wind farm in Jeju-Do. According to the comparison of these results, this method shows excellent performance.

Long-term measured wind data are absolutely necessary to estimate extreme offshore wind speed. However, it is almost impossible to collect offshore wind measured data. Therefore, typhoon simulation is widely used to analyze offshore wind conditions. In this paper, 74 typhoons which affected the western sea of Korea during 1978-2012(35 years) were simulated using Holland(1980) model. The results showed that 49.02 m/s maximum wind speed affected by BOLAVEN(1215) at 100 m heights of HeMOSU-1 (Herald of Meteorological and Oceanographic Special Unit - 1) was the biggest wind speed for 35 years. Meanwhile, estimated wind speeds were compared with observed data for MUIFA, BOLAVEN, SANBA at HeMOSU-1. And to estimate extreme wind speed having return periods, extreme analysis was conducted by assuming 35 annual maximum wind speed at four site(HeMOSU-1, Gunsan, Mokpo and Jeju) in western sea of the Korean Peninsular to be Gumbel distribution. As a results, extreme wind speed having 50-year return period was 50 m/s, that of 100-year was 54.92 m/s at 100 m heights, respectively. The maximum wind speed by BOLAVEN could be considered as a extreme winds having 50-year return period.

This paper proposes a new fuzzy speed control method based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy method of permanent magnet synchronous generators(PMSM) for variable-speed wind turbine systems. The proposed fuzzy speed controller consists of the control terms that compensate for the nonlinearity of PMSG and the control terms that stabilize the error dynamics. The conditions are derived for the existence of the proposed speed controller, and the gain matrices of the controller are given. The proposed control method can guarantee that the PMSG can effectively track the speed reference which is calculated through the MPPT control and can reduce the fluctuations of the generated power under even fast random wind conditions. To verify the performance of the proposed fuzzy speed controller, the simulation results are demonstrated.
Most variable speed wind turbines have pitch control mechanisms and one of their objectives is to protect turbines when the wind speed is too high. By adjusting pitch angles of wind turbine, the inlet power and the torque developed by the turbine are regulated. In this paper, the difference between the real wind speed and its rated value is regarded as a disturbance, and a component called disturbance observer (DOB) is added to the pre-designed control loop. The additional DOB based controller estimates the disturbance and generates a compensating signal to suppress the effect of disturbance on the system. As a result, the stability and the performance of the closed loop system guaranteed by an outer-loop controller (designed for a nominal system without taking into account of disturbances) are approximately recovered in the steady state. Simulation results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed control scheme.
A tendency to erect more wind turbines can be observed in order to reduce the environmental consequences of electric power generation. As a result of this, in the near future, wind turbines may start to influence the behavior of electric power systems by interacting with conventional generation and loads. Therefore, wind turbine models that can be integrated into power system simulation software are needed. In this paper, a model that can be used to represent all types of variable speed wind turbines in power system simulations is presented. Wind turbine characteristic equation of a wind turbine is implemented in the RTDS, and the real data of weather conditions are interfaced to the RTDS for the purpose of real time simulation of grid-connection wind power system. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme in this paper. The results show that the cost effective verifying for the efficiency and stability of WPGS.
A numerical simulation on the wake flow of a wind turbine which is a scaled version of a multi-megawatt wind turbine has been performed. Two different inlet conditions of averaged wind speed including one below and one above the rated wind speed were used in the simulation. Steady-state pitch angles of the blade associated with the two averaged wind speeds were imposed for the simulation. The steady state analysis based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the method of frame motion were used for the simulation to find the torque of the rotor and the wake field behind the wind turbine. The simulation results were compared with the results obtained from the wind tunnel testing. From comparisons, it was found that the simulation results on the turbine power are pretty close to the experimental values. Also, the wake results were relatively close to the experimental results but there existed some discrepancy in the shape of velocity deficit. The reason for the discrepancy is considered due to the steady state solution with the frame motion method used in the simulation. However, the method is considered useful for solutions with much reduced calculation time and reasonably good accuracy compared to the transient analysis.
