Onshore wind turbines may experience substantially different wind loads depending on their working conditions, i.e. rotation velocity of rotor blades, incoming freestream wind velocity, pitch angle of rotor blades, and yaw angle of the wind-turbine tower. In the present study, aerodynamic loads acting on a horizontal axis wind turbine were accordingly quantified for the high tip speed ratio (TSR) at high yaw angles because these conditions have previously not been adequately addressed. This was analyzed experimentally on a small-scale wind-turbine model in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The wind-tunnel simulation of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) developing above a flat terrain was generated using the Counihan approach. The ABL was simulated to achieve the conditions of a wind-turbine model operating in similar inflow conditions to those of a prototype wind turbine situated in the lower atmosphere, which is another important aspect of the present work. The ABL and wind-turbine simulation length scale factors were the same (S=300) in order to satisfy the Jensen similarity criterion. Aerodynamic loads experienced by the wind-turbine model subjected to the ABL simulation were studied based on the high frequency force balance (HFFB) measurements. Emphasis was put on the thrust force and the bending moment because these two load components have previously proven to be dominant compared to other load components. The results indicate several important findings. The loads were substantially higher for TSR=10 compared to TSR=5.6. In these conditions, a considerable load reduction was achieved by pitching the rotor blades. For the blade pitch angle at 90°, the loads were ten times lower than the loads of the rotating wind-turbine model. For the blade pitch angle at 12°, the loads were at 50% of the rotating wind-turbine model. The loads were reduced by up to 40% through the yawing of the wind-turbine model, which was observed both for the rotating and the parked wind-turbine model.
This study aims to evaluate the dynamic responses of the jacket-type offshore wind turbine using FAST software (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence). A systematic series of simulation cases of a 5 MW jacket-type offshore wind turbine, including wind-only, wave-only, wind & wave load cases are conducted. The dynamic responses of the wind turbine structure are obtained, including the structure displacement, rotor speed, thrust force, nacelle acceleration, bending moment at the tower bottom, and shear force on the jacket leg. The calculated time-domain results are transformed to frequency domain results using FFT and the environmental load with more impact on each dynamic response is identified. It is confirmed that the dynamic displacements of the wind turbine are dominant in the wave frequency under the incident wave alone condition, and the rotor thrust, nacelle acceleration, and bending moment at the bottom of the tower exhibit high responses in the natural frequency band of the wind turbine. In the wind only condition, all responses except the vertical displacement of the wind turbine are dominant at three times the rotor rotation frequency (considering the number of blades) generated by the wind. In a combined external force with wind and waves, it was observed that the horizontal displacement is dominant by the wind load. Additionally, the bending moment on the tower base is highly affected by the wind. The shear force of the jacket leg is basically influenced by the wave loads, but it can be affected by both the wind and wave loads especially under the turbulent wind and irregular wave conditions.
To validate the rotor performance analysis, 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) analysis was performed for tilt rotor aeroacoustic model(TRAM). Also, 3D vehicle with rotating rotors was simulated for rotor power effect analysis. Multiple reference frame(MRF) and sliding mesh techniques were implemented to capture the effect of rotor revolution. CFD results were compared with the wind tunnel test results to validate their accuracy. At helicopter mode, CFD analysis predicted lower thrust than the wind tunnel test but CFD results showed good agreement with the test result at cruise mode. Rotor power effect decreased the lift but did not change drag and pitching moment.

Time series data of 6-component loads were computed for a horizontal axis wind turbine rotor in yawed operating conditions with both rotating and non-rotating coordinate systems fixed at a center of a rotor hub. In this study, a well-known 20 kW class of the NREL Phase VI rotor was used for a model wind turbine, and this paper focuses on the yaw moments and over-turning moments for the operating wind speed range between 6 to 25 m/s. Unsteady blade element momentum theorem was adopted to get the aerodynamic loads acting on the wind turbine rotor. Computed 6-component loads using the developed UBEM code were compared with those using the NREL FAST program. From the computed results, both yaw and over-turning moments would be basic inputs to determine not only the specification of yawing mechanism but also the design condition of foundation.

Performance and hub vibratory load analyses for a lift-offset coaxial rotor are conducted using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The lift-offset coaxial rotor is trimmed to match the total rotor thrust(lift-offset coaxial rotor's thrust) or the individual rotor thrust(upper and lower rotor thrusts, respectively) in this study. The individual rotor's lift and torque, and effective rotor lift to drag ratio for the total rotor are investigated for various advance ratios and lift-offset values. The two result sets with different trim methods are similar to each other and they are correlated well with the wind-tunnel test results. Therefore, the present study using CAMRAD II validates successfully the aeromechanics modeling and analysis techniques for the lift-offset coaxial rotor.

This study is focused on the shape design and flow analysis on a 200 W-class Gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine rotor blade. Single tube theory is adopted for the shape design of the turbine blade. 2-dimensional CFD analysis is conducted to examine the turbine performance with basic shape, and then 3-dimensional shape is determined from the examination of the performance. By the CFD analysis on the 3-dimensional shape of the wind turbine, performance of the turbine is examined and also, shape of the wind turbine rotor blade is determined accordingly. From the results of this study, a 200 W-class Gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine rotor blade is designed and the reliability of the design method is confirmed by CFD analysis.
A variable electromotive-force generator (VEG), which is a modified generator with an adjustable overlap between the rotor and the stator, is proposed to expand the operational range of a regular generator through a simple and robust active control strategy. It has a broad range of applications in hybrid vehicles, wind turbines, water turbines, and similar technologies. A mathematical model of the VEG is developed, and a novel prototype is designed and fabricated. The performance of the VEG with an active control system, which adjusts the overlap ratio based on the desired output power at different rotor speeds for a specific application, is theoretically and experimentally studied. The results show that reducing the overlap between the rotor and the stator of the generator results in reduced torque loss of the generator and an increased rotational speed of the generator rotor. A VEG can improve the fuel efficiency of hybrid vehicles; it can also expand operational ranges of wind turbines and water turbines and harness more power.
Wide operating range and speed control is needed for wind power generating and a Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has good adaptivity for that purpose. This paper deals with power and power factor control using the Grid connected DFIG in the wide speed regions, by controlling frequency and voltage fed to the rotor. Power flow of the DFIG and steady-state algebraic equations of the equivalent circuit are analyzed. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, the rotor current was either less than or equal to the rated value. Accordingly, the optimal power factor can be selected relative to the permissible rated current at the rotor coil which controls the magnitude of the injected rotor voltage to the rotor according to a given rotor frequency.
The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis of the 3-D steady flow around the NREL Phase VI horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) rotor was performed. The CFD analysis results were compared with experimental data at several different wind speeds. The present CFD model shows good agreements with the experiments both at low wind speed which formed well-attache flow mostly on the upper surface of the blade, and at high wind speed which blade surface flow completely separated. However, some discrepancy occurs at the relatively high wind speeds where mixed attached and separated flow formed on the suction surface of the blade. It seems that the discrepancy is related to the onset of stall phenomena and consequently separation prediction capability of the current turbulence model. It is also found that strong span-wise flow occurs in stalled area due to the centrifugal force generated by rotation of the turbine rotor and it prevents abrupt reduction of normal force for higher wind speed than the designed value.
