Lightness and flexibility of membrane roofs make them very sensitive to any external load. One of the most important parameters that controls their behavior, especially under wind load is the sag/span ratio of edge cables. Based on the value of the pretension force in the edge cables and the horizontal projection of the actual area covered by the membrane, an optimized design range of cable sag/span ratios has been determined through carrying on several membrane form-finding analyses. Fully coupled fluid structure dynamic analyses of these membrane roofs are performed under wind load with several conditions using the CFD method. Through investigating the numerical results of these analyses, the behavior of membrane roofs with cables sag/span ratios selected from the previously determined optimized design range has been evaluated.
The present parer outlines the system identification and vibration control performance of air traffic control tower of Yangyang international airport with tuned mass damper(TMD). From the free vibration test, natural frequency, damping ratio and mode shape of tower are obtained and these values are compared with the values from numerical analysis. In the vibration control test to evaluate the vibration control performance, equivalent damping ratio increased by tuned mass damper are obtained in case the TMD is operated as passive mode. Damping ratio of tower evaluated from free vibration test is about $1.0{\%}$. It is very low value than damping ratio recommended in general code. Damping ratio of passive mode is about $5{\%}$. These equivalent damping ratio increased by TMD is enough to enhance the serviceability of tower structure under wind load.
In order to investigate the characteristics of torsional wind loads on rectangular tall buildings, five models with different rectangular cross-sections were tested in a boundary wind tunnel. Based on the test results, the RMS force coefficients, power spectrum densities as well as vertical correlation functions of torsional wind loads were analyzed. Formulas that took the side ratio as parameters were proposed to fit the test results above. Comparisons between the results calculated by the formulas and the wind tunnel measurements were made to verify the reliability of the proposed formulas. An simplified expression to evaluate the dynamic torsional wind loads on rectangular tall buildings in urban terrain is presented on basis of the above formulas and has been proved by a practical project. The simplified expressions as well as the proposed formulas can be applied to estimate wind-induce torsional response on rectangular tall buildings in the frequency domain.

This paper presents a modeling and simulation of a fuzzy controller for maximum power extraction of a grid-connected wind energy conversion system with a link of a rectifier and an inverter. It discusses the maximum power control algorithm for a wind turbine and proposes, in a graphical form, the relationships of wind turbine output, rotor speed, power coefficient, tip-speed ratio with wind speed when the wind turbine is operated under the maximum power control. The control objective is to always extract maximum power from wind and transfer the power to the utility by controlling both the pitch angle of the wind turbine blades and the inverter firing angle. Pitch control method is mechanically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation method. The simulation results performed on MATLAB will show the variation of generator's rotor angle and rotor speed, pitch angle, and generator output.
In the present paper, the scale effects of two-dimensional airfoil and three-dimensional wind turbine were investigated by using FLUENT software. For two dimensional analysis, flow around S809 airfoil with various Reynolds No. and Mach No. conditions were simulated. For three dimensional analysis, scaled NREL Phase VI wind turbine models from 6% to 1,600% were simulated under the same tip speed ratio condition. Finally, aerodynamic comparisons between two-dimensional flow and three dimensional wind turbine flow are made for the feasibility study of scale effect corrections. Currently, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) is preparing for the wind tunnel test of 12% NREL Phase VI wind turbine and the performance analysis of the scaled NREL wind turbine model will be validated by the wind tunnel test.

The new aerofoil, KA2 was designed to apply to the wind turbine blade. For the aerofoil, numerical analysis was performed to review aerodynamic characteristics like lift and drag coefficient. And they are verified with test data using the digital wind tunnel and test samples from 3D printer. The digital wind tunnel was developed to test wing in the small laboratory, and verified with test of NACA0012 airfoil. KA2 aerofoil is asymmetric, and has the thickness ratio of 14%, and 12 degree of AOA at the maximum lift coefficient of 1.3. In this paper, aerodynamic characteristics from numerical and test approaches will be proposed with AOA in detail. Therefore, this aerofoil will be used for the design of wind turbine blade.
In the variable-speed wind energy system, to achieve maximum power point tracking (MPPT), the wind turbine should run close to its optimal angular speed according to the wind speed. Non-linear control methods that consider the dynamic behavior of wind speed are generally used to provide maximum power and improved efficiency. In this perspective, the mechanical power is estimated using Kalman filter. And then, from the estimated mechanical power, the wind speed is estimated with Newton-Raphson method to achieve maximum power without anemometer. However, the blade shape and air density get changed with time and the generator efficiency is also degraded. This results in incorrect estimation of wind speed and MPPT. It causes not only the power loss but also incorrect wind resource assessment of site. In this paper, the adaptive maximum power point tracking control algorithm for wind turbine system based on the estimation of wind speed is proposed. The proposed method applies correction factor to wind turbine system to have accurate wind speed estimation for exact MPPT. The proposed method is validated with numerical simulations and the results show an improved performance.
Wind tunnel aeroelastic model tests of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council (CAARC) standard tall building were conducted using a three-degree-of-freedom base hinged aeroelastic(BHA) model. Experimental investigation into the effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, cross-wind/torsional frequency ratio and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness on the wind-induced response characteristics and wind excitation mechanisms was carried out. The wind tunnel test results highlight the significant effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness, on both the normalised along-wind and cross-wind acceleration responses for reduced wind velocities ranging from 4 to 20. Coupled translational-torsional motion and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness also have significant impacts on the amplitude-dependent effect caused by the vortex resonant process, and the transfer of vibrational energy between the along-wind and cross-wind directions. These resulted in either an increase or decrease of each response component, in particular at reduced wind velocities close to a critical value of 10. In addition, the contribution of vibrational energy from the torsional motion to the cross-wind response of the building model can be greatly amplified by the effect of resonance between the vortex shedding frequency and the torsional natural frequency of the building model.
The aim of the current study is to compare the performance of large 2 MW and 3 MW wind turbines operating on existing onshore wind farms using Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory and Angular Momentum (AM) theory and illustrate the performance characteristic curves of the turbines as a function of wind speed (U∞). To achieve this, the measurement data obtained from two different Wind Energy Power Plants (WEPPs) located in the Hatay region of Turkey was used. Two different horizontal-axis wind turbines with capacities of 2 MW and 3 MW were selected for evaluation and comparison. The hub-height wind speed (UD), turbine power output (P), atmospheric air temperature (Tatm) and turbine rotational speed (Ω) data were used in the evaluation of the turbine performance characteristics. Curves of turbine power output (P), axial flow induction factor (a), turbine rotational speed (Ω), turbine power coefficient (CP), blade tip speed ratio (λ), thrust force coefficient (CT) and thrust force (T) as a function of U∞ were obtained for the 2 MW and 3 MW wind turbines and these characteristic curves were compared. Results revealed that, for the same wind speed conditions, the higher-capacity wind turbine (3 MW) was operating at higher turbine power coefficient rates, while rotating at lower rotational speed ratios than the lower-capacity wind turbine (2 MW).
