  • A distinctive feature in vibration control of a large civil infrastructure is the existence of large disturbances, such as wind, earthquake, and sea wave forces. Those disturbances govern the behavior of the structure, however, they cannot be precisely measured, especially for the case of wind-induced vibration control. The sliding mode fuzzy control (SMFC), which is of interest in this study, may use not only the structural response measurement but also the wind force measurement. Hence, an adaptive disturbance estimation filter is introduced to generate a wind force vector at each time instance based on the measured structural response and the stochastic information of the wind force. The structure of the filter is constructed based on an auto-regressive with auxiliary input model. A numerical simulation is carried out on a benchmark problem of a wind-excited building. The results indicate that the overall performance of the proposed SMFC is as good as the other methods and that most of the performance indices improve as the adaptive disturbance estimation filter is introduced.

  • The commercial tools to simulate the non-linear dynamic characteristics of wind turbine system are various but, the tool take much time to simulate the control algorithm and require many input variables. In this paper, the procedures to derive the simplified 4-degree-of-freedom mathematical model of a 2-MW wind turbine which could be used at the initial design stage of the controller are proposed based on RISO's suggested method. In this model, the 1st tower fore-after bending motion and 1st blade flapping motion are also considered in addition to the rotor-generator rotation motion in the 2-DOF model. The effectiveness of the 4-DOF model is examined comparing with the 2-DOF model and verification of the simplified model is accomplished through modal analysis for whole wind turbine system.

  • In this study, wind loads transmitted to a transmission tower from transmission lines are mitigated using rotational viscoelastic dampers. First, the wind load characteristics in a transmission tower is investigated considering the effect of the transmission lines through stochastic analysis. The assemblage of the transmission line and insulator are modeled as a double pendulum system connected to the SDOF model of the tower. From the result of the stochastic analysis, the background component of the overturing moment caused by the wind loads acting on the transmission lines are found to have considerable portion in the total overturning moment. Based on this observation result, a strategy Installing rotational viscoelastic damper (VED) between tower arm and transmission line is proposed for the mitigation of the transmission line reactions, which play a role as dynamic loads on a transmission tower. For the purpose of verification, time history analysis is conducted for different wind velocities and VED parameters. The analysis result shows that the rotational VED is effective for the mitigation of the background component rather than the resonance component of the transmission line reactions and achieves the reduction ratio of 50% even for higher wind speed.

  • The $9 billion US global wind energy market is experiencing dramatic growth with installed generating capacity up 500% from 7,600 MW at the end of 1997 to nearly 39,300 MW at the end of 2003. With an average annual increase approaching 32%, wind is the world's fastest growing energy source on a percentage basis, and its growth is forecast to continue a double-digit pace into the next decade 1. While much of this growth is fueled by government decisions that are favorable to 'green' or renewable Power, it is also fueled by advances in wind turbine technology as evidenced by larger, more sophisticated machines. As a result, wind turbines are becoming more established as an economically viable alternative to fossil-fueled power generation. Today, wind 'farms' - consisting of anywhere from a single turbine to as many as several hundred turbines - are an important component of the world's source of electric energy.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an air-passing soundproofing panel with more improved structure to reduce the $CO_2$ emission and installation cost. To reduce the emission of $CO_2$ ; it is suggested to choose low $CO_2$ emission material relative to the aluminum and to reduce the materials by developing a specially designed air-passing soundproofing panel structure. First of all, we performed the flow analysis to predict the wind pressure according to the open angle of the air-passing soundproofing panel and the noise level analysis at the receiver point. To verify the simulation, a prototype of the soundproofing panel was made. The flow test in the wind tunnel and load test were performed. The economic evaluation for the installation of the air-passing soundproofing panel was performed and specifications of the installation was prepared. As the results of this research, it was verified that the wind load was reduced about 40% to that of the conventional one at 25m/s wind speed in the wind tunnel test. By applying the 4m span soundproofing wall with air-passing soundproofing panel and under the cost of 250 thousand $won/m^2$ instead of the conventional 2m span panel, the installation cost will always be lowered than the conventional one in the combination of (60:40~50:50) conventional to air-passing soundproofing panel from the economic evaluation. The 20% reduction of $CO_2$ was found by changing the 50% of aluminum soundproof panel to air-passing soundproofing panel.

  • Types of noise barrier installed for noise attenuation are largely divided into noise-absorbing format and noise-proofing format. In these days, installation of transparent noise barrier is general trend to solve problems that hinder sunshine and landscape. Some kinds of transparent boards are used to one of components in noise barriers, but in some cases, less transparency and worse pollution due to yellowing phenomena, and severe material deformation are to harm the urban aesthetics Therefore laminated-tempered glass board in that yellowing phenomena does not occur can be replaced as a transparent one to secure those shortcomings. In this paper, the structural safety against train induced vibration and the resistibility to wind load are analyzed for laminated-tempered glass system as a component of noise barrier installed on Metro railway elevated bridges. Also the appropriateness is evaluated through flexural bending performance test, compressive strength test, modulus of elasticity tests, and impact test for the system or the glass material itself. All of these processes are intended to present the deployment of logic to evaluate the adequacy for the system.

  • An experimental study on frequency characteristics of the microphone array covered with Kevlar sheet was conducted in the closed test section. Microphones that were flush-mounted in the wall of wind tunnel were subjected to very high flow noise resulting from the turbulence in the wall boundary layer. This noise interference by the boundary layer was referred as 'a microphone self-noise' and various approaches were studied to reduce this interference. Recessed microphone array with high tensioned cover was one of the good approaches to reduce this self-noise. But, the array cover could cause an unexpected interference to the measuring results. In this paper the frequency characteristics of the microphone array with Kevlar cover was experimentally studied. The white noise was used as a reference noise source. Three kinds of tensions for the Kevlar cover were tested and those results were compared with the test results without the Kevlar cover. The gap effect between the cover and microphone head was also tested to find out the proper position of microphone in the array module. Test results show that the mid-tension and 10mm gap was the best choice in the tested cases.
