A STUDY ON THE PREDICTION OF THE BASE FLOW CHARACTERISTICS OF A LAUNCH VEHICLE USING CFD

  • Numerical simulations are made to predict the axial force coefficients of a two-stage launch vehicle, and the results are compared with those by wind tunnel tests. It is found that the forebody axial force is not affected by whether the base of the body is modeled or not. Modeling the sting support used in wind tunnel tests reduced the base axial force compared to the results without it. The present calculation shows that the forebody axial forces are underestimated while the base axial forces are overestimated. The total axial force, therefore, compares with the experimental data with better accuracy by cancelling out the errors of opposite signs. Modeling of the sting support in numerical simulations is found to be necessary to get a better agreement with the experiments for both base and overall axial force coefficients.

Shape optimization of corner recessed square tall building employing surrogate modelling

  • The present study is performed to find the effect of corner recession on a square plan-shaped tall building. A series of numerical simulations have been carried out to find the two orthogonal wind force coefficients on various model configurations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Numerical analyses are performed by using ANSYS-CFX (k-ℇ turbulence model) considering the length scale of 1:300. The study is performed for 0° to 360° wind angle of attack. The CFD data thus generated is utilised to fit parametric equations to predict alongwind and crosswind force coefficients, Cfx and Cfy. The precision of the parametric equations is validated by employing a wind tunnel study for the 40% corner recession model, and an excellent match is observed. Upon satisfactory validation, the parametric equations are further used to carry out multiobjective optimization considering two orthogonal force coefficients. Pareto optimal design results are presented to propose suitable percentages of corner recession for the study building. The optimization is based on reducing the alongwind and crosswind forces simultaneously to enhance the aerodynamic performance of the building.

  • Wind load is known to be one of major forces to influence the stability of agricultural structures. General flow fields were calculated to determine flow characteristics over the envelop of the following three types of greenhouses with arched roof : single span, twin span greenhouses, and two single span greenhouses apart 3m inbetween. Pressure coefficients along the envelop of greenhouse were numerically calculated by the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model, which lead to determine wind forces on it. Curvilinear coordinate for an arched roof and the upwind scheme were adopted for the study. The calculated pressure coefficients were validated with the avaliable data of Japanese Standard and NGAM Standard. The Magnitude of calculated forces over the envelop was not in good accordance with data except the windward wall. Even tile data of Japanese and NGAM Standard for validation deviated a lot from each other in quantity and quality. Such discrepancy may be attributed to different geometric and/or flow configuration conditions for experiments, or the insenstivity of the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model to recirculation flow.

Pressure distribution and aerodynamic forces on stationary box bridge sections

  • Simultaneous pressure and force measurements have been conducted on a stationary box deck section model for two configurations (namely without and with New Jersey traffic barriers) at various angles of incidence. The mean and fluctuating aerodynamic coefficients and pressure coefficients were derived, together with their spectra and with the coherence functions between the pressures and the total aerodynamic forces. The mean aerodynamic coefficients derived from force measurements are first compared with those derived from the integration of the pressures on the deck surface. Correlation between forces and local pressures are determined in order to gain insight on the wind excitation mechanism. The influence of the angle of incidence on the pressure distribution and on the fluctuating forces is also analysed. It is evidenced how particular deck section areas are more responsible for the aerodynamic excitation of the deck.

Experimental investigation of Reynolds number effects on 2D rectangular prisms with various side ratios and rounded corners

  • Experiments on two-dimensional rectangular prisms with various side ratios (B/D=2, 3, and 4, where B is the along-wind dimension, and D is the across-wind dimension) and rounded corners (R/D=0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%, where R is the corner radius) are reported in this study. The tests were conducted in low-turbulence uniform flow to measure the wind pressures on the surfaces of 12 models for Reynolds numbers ranging from $1.1{\times}10^5$ to $6.8{\times}10^5$. The aerodynamic force coefficients were obtained by integrating the wind pressure coefficients around the model surface. Experimental results of wind pressure distributions, aerodynamic force coefficients, and Strouhal numbers are presented for the 12 models. The mechanisms of the Reynolds number effects are revealed by analyzing the variations of wind pressure distributions. The sensitivity of aerodynamic behavior to the Reynolds number increases with increasing side ratio or rounded corner ratio for rectangular prisms. In addition, the variations of the mean pressure distributions and the pressure correlations on the side surfaces of rectangular prisms with the rounded corner ratio are analyzed at $Re=3.4{\times}10^5$.

A new rotational force model for quasi-steady theory of plate-like windborne debris in uniform flow

  • The force coefficients of rotating plates in the acceleration stage will vary with rotation rate from 0 to stable rotation rate w0, which are important for quasi-steady theory of plate-like windborne debris to simulate the trajectory. In this paper, a wind tunnel experiment is carried out to study the effects of geometry and the Reynolds number on the variations of mean force coefficients of rotating plates. The rotational lift coefficients are sensitive to both geometry effect and Reynolds number effect, while the rotational drag and moment coefficients are only sensitive to geometry effect. In addition, new empirical formulas for the rotational lift coefficient and moment coefficients are proposed. Its accuracy is verified by comparing the predicted results with existing test data. Based on the experimental data of rotating plates, a new rotational force model for quasi-steady theory, which can be applied to a wider scope, is proposed to calculate the trajectory of plate-like windborne debris. The results show that the new model provides a better match with the tested trajectories than previous quasi-steady theories.

Experimental test on bridge jointed twin-towered buildings to stochastic wind loads

  • This paper presents results of a study on wind loads and wind induced dynamic response of bridge jointed twin-towered buildings. Utilizing the high-frequency force balance technique, the drag and moment coefficients measured in wind tunnel tests, and the maximum acceleration rms values on the top floor of towers, are analyzed to examine the influence of building's plan shapes and of intervals between towers. The alongwind, acrosswind and torsional modal force spectra are investigated for generic bridge jointed twin-towered building models which cover twin squares, twin rhombuses, twin triangles, twin triangles with sharp corners cut off, twin rectangles and individual rectangle with the same outline aspect ratio as the twin rectangles. The analysis of the statistical correlation among three components of the aerodynamic force corroborated that the correlation between acrosswind and torsional forces is significant for bridge jointed twin-towered buildings.

Mean wind loads on T-shaped angle transmission towers

  • Compared with traditional transmission towers, T-shaped angle towers have long cross-arms and are specially used for ultrahigh-voltage direct-current (UHVDC) transmission. Nevertheless, the wind loads of T-shaped towers have not received much attention in previous studies. Consequently, a series of wind tunnel tests on the T-shaped towers featuring cross-arms of varying lengths were conducted using the high-frequency force balance (HFFB) technique. The test results reveal that the T-shaped tower's drag coefficients nearly remain constant at different testing velocities, demonstrating that Reynolds number effects are negligible in the test range of 1.26 × 104-2.30 × 104. The maximum values of the longitudinal base shear and torsion of the T-shaped tower are reached at 15° and 25° of wind incidence, respectively. In the yaw angle, the crosswind coefficients of the tower body are quite small, whereas those of the cross-arms are significant, and as a result, the assumption in some load codes (such as ASCE 74-2020, IEC 60826-2017 and EN 50341-1:2012) that the resultant force direction is the same as the wind direction may be inappropriate for the cross-arm situation. The fitting formulas for the wind load-distribution factors of the tower body and cross-arms are developed, respectively, which would greatly facilitate the determination of the wind loads on T-shaped angle towers.

Effect of internal angles between limbs of cross plan shaped tall building under wind load

  • The present study revealed comparison the pressure distribution on the surfaces of regular cross plan shaped building with angular cross plan shaped building which is being transformed from basic cross plan shaped building through the variation of internal angles between limbs by $15^{\circ}$ for various wind incidence angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ at an interval of $30^{\circ}$. In order to maintain the area same the limbs sizes are slightly increased accordingly. Numerical analysis has been carried out to generate similar nature of flow condition as per IS: 875 (Part -III):1987 (a mean wind velocity of 10 m/s) by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with help of ANSYS CFX ($k-{\varepsilon}$ model). The variation of mean pressure coefficients, pressure distribution over the surface, flow pattern and force coefficient are evaluated for each cases and represented graphically to understand extent of nonconformities due to such angular modifications in plan. Finally regular cross shaped building results are compared with wind tunnel results obtained from similar '+' shaped building study with similar flow condition. Reduction in along wind force coefficients for angular crossed shaped building, observed for various skew angles leads to develop lesser along wind force on building compared to regular crossed shaped building and square plan shaped building. Interference effect within the internal faces are observed in particular faces of building for both cases, considerably. Significant deviation is noticed in wind induced responses for angular cross building compared to regular cross shaped building for different direction wind flow.

  • In a wind tunnel experiment employing a reduced scale model, Reynolds number (Re) can hardly be respected. Its effects on the aerodynamics of closed-box bridge decks have been the subject of research in recent years. Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong is a cable-stayed bridge having an unprecedented central span of 1018m. The issue of Re sensitivity was raised early in the design phase of the deck of Stonecutters Bridge. The objective of this study is to summarise the results of various wind tunnel experiments in order to demonstrate the effect of Re on the steady state aerodynamic force coefficients. The results may provide an insight on the choice of scale for section model experiments in bridge design projects. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of forces on bridge deck section was also carried out to see how CFD results are compared with experimental results.
