  • This research presents a method for the initial structural design of a multi-megawatt wind turbine blade. The structural data for a 2-MW blade were applied as the blade structural characteristic data of the reference blade. Tenkinds of blade models were newly designed by replacing the spar cap axial GRRP with a GFRP and CFRP These terms should be defined. at different orientations. The axial stiffness coefficients of the newly designed models were made equal to the coefficient of the reference blade. The required numbers of layers in each section of blades were calculated, and the lay-up designs were based on these numbers. Verification results showed that the design method that used the structural data of the reference blade was appropriate for the initial structural design of a wind turbine blade.

  • The average growth in the wind power energy market during the past five years has been 26% per year. Renewable energy resources, of which wind energy is prominent, are part of the solution to the global energy problem. Wind power system and the rotor blade concepts are reviewed, and loadings by wind and gravity as important factors for the mechanical performance of the materials are considered. So, the mechanical properties of fiber composite materials are discussed. In addition, it is necessary to analyze and evaluate the stress distribution and deformation for them in the design level. This study shows the result that CFRP rotor blade of wind turbine satisfies the strength and deformation through numerical analysis using the commercial finite element analysis program.

  • The paper presents a speed control algorithm for a full pitch-controlled wind turbine system. Torque of a blade generated by wind energy is non-linear function of a wind speed, angular velocity, and pitch angle of the blade. The design of a cor_troller, in general, is performed by linearizing the torque in the vicinity of a operating point assuming the angular velocity of the blade is constant. For speed control, however, the angular velocity is no longer a constant, so that linearization of the torque in terms of a wind speed and pitch angle is impossible. In this study, a reference pitch model is derived in terms of a wind speed, angular velocity, and pitch angle, which makes it possible to design a controller without linearizing the non-linear torque model of the blade. The validity of the algorithm is demonstrated with the results produced through sets of experiments.

  • Numerical calculation for the 1MW class horizontal axis wind turbine blade has been carried out to estimate the magnitude between discrete noise and random noise. Farassat formula 1A was adopted to get the discrete noise signal, and blade element momentum theory was used to obtain the distribution of the aerodynamic data along the blade span. Fukano's approach was also adopted to calculate the unsteady aerodynamic random noise due to the Karman vortex generation at the trailing edge of the wind turbine blade. From the noise prediction for the 1MW class horizontal axis wind turbine, the frequency band of the discrete noise lies in the infrasound region, and that of the random noise lies in the audible band region.

  • This research presents results of structural designs and evaluations for 3MW Wind Turbine Blade by FEM analysis. After the GFRP model was designed as a baseline model, failure check by Puck's failure criterion and buckling analysis were accomplished to verify safety of wind turbine blade in the critical design load case. Moreover, applicability of two kinds of carbon spar cap model, was studied by comparing total mass, price and tip deflection to the GFRP model. The results showed that the GFRP model had sufficient structural integrity in the critical design load case, and the carbon spar cap model could be a reasonable solution to reduce weights, tip deflections.

  • This paper presents the aerodynamic performances of horizontal axis wind turbines with non-twisted but taperd blades. Five configurations of blades, namely, one straight blade and four tapered blades with taper ratio of ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 have been simulated. The aerodynamic performances of the wind turbines have been determined over blade incidence angle of ranging from $2^{\circ}$ to $6^{\circ}$ and keeping same solidity and radius of them. The results are presented comparing straight blade from four tapered blades for maximum power coefficient and tip looses against variation of taper ratio. It also shows that the wind turbine with taper ratio of 0.5 has the highest maximum power coefficient than others. And wind turbines with taper ratio below 0.2 have lower values of maximum power coefficients than straight one. The tip loss of straight blade is the largest and reduces Slightly with the decrementation of taper ratio.

  • To generate electricity from wind energy, wind turbine generally has a rotor blade. Since this rotor blade is a kind of the rotating machinery, the wake from the rotor is very Important role in the side of the aerodynamic performances. Thus the study about wake is essential to analyze wind turbine aerodynamics. In this study wake characteristics are analyzed by hot-wire probe in the K.A.F.A(Korea Air Force Academy) wind tunnel. It is possible to analyze the wake characteristics by hot-wire probe from acquiring the velocity fluctuations at given positions in the flow. This velocity data are arranged by trigger signal at same azimuth of the blade in periodic manner of the rotor blade. From this various wake characteristics are found : radial and axial position of the tip vortex, vortex core characteristics in the flow etc.

  • In modem wind power system of large capacity above 1MW, horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) is a common type. And, the optimum design of wind turbine to guarantee excellent power performance and its reliability in structure and longevity is a key technology in wind Industry. In this study, mathematical expressions based upon the conventional BEMT(blade element momentum theory) applying to basic 1MW wind turbine blade configuration design. Power coefficient and related flow parameters, such as Prandtl's tip loss coefficient, tangential and axial flow induction factors of the wind turbine analyzed systematically. X-FOIL was used to acquire lift and drag coefficients of the 2-D airfoils and we use Viterna-Corrigan formula to interpolate the aerodynamic characteristics in post-stall region. In order to predict the performance characteristics of the blade, a performance analysis carried out by BEMT method. As a results, axial and tangential flow factors, angle of attack, power coefficient investigated in this study.

  • This paper presents a theoretical method to deal with the aerodynamic performance and pitch optimization of the horizontal axis wind turbine blades at low wind speeds. By considering a blade element, the functional relationship among the angle of attack, pitch angle, rotational speed of the blade, and wind speed is derived in consideration of a quasi-steady aerodynamic model, and aerodynamic loads on the blade element are then obtained. The torque and torque coefficient of the blade are derived by using integration. A polynomial approximation is applied to functions of the lift and drag coefficients for the symmetric and asymmetric airfoils respectively, where specific expressions of aerodynamic loads as functions of the angle of attack (which is a function of pitch angle) are obtained. The pitch optimization problem is investigated by considering the maximum value problem of the instantaneous torque of a blade as a function of pitch angle. Dynamic pitch laws for HAWT blades with either symmetric or asymmetric airfoils are derived. Influences of parameters including inflow ratio, rotational speed, azimuth, and wind speed on torque coefficient and optimal pith angle are discussed.

  • This paper describes the structural design of small wind turbine blade by using design of experiments. Blade structure consists of skin, spar and foam. The materials for skin and spar are a kind of Glass/Epoxy and form is polyurethane. It has 7 lay-ups with different ply angle. A factorial design is applied to design the ply angles considering manufacturing constraints and to investigate the safety factor which is calculated by structural analysis. In order to perform the structural analysis, the commercial software ABAQUS is used. Tsai-Wu failure criterion is chosen to compute safety factor. The determination of the significance of effects in the experiments is made through the analysis of variance. The results show that ply angle at skin affects the safety factor of wind turbine blade. And from this result, optimal ply angles of composite blade are achieved.
