In this study, performance analyses have been conducted for a 5MW class wind turbine blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with K-${\epsilon}$ turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of the blade show different results compared to the case of rigid blade model.
Irregularity in plan shape is very common for any type of building as it enhances better air ventilation for the inhabitants. Systematic opening at the middle of the facades makes the appearance of the building plan as a butterfly one. The primary focus of this study is to forecast the force, moment and torsional coefficient of a butterfly plan shaped tall building. Initially, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study is done on the building model based on Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) k-epsilon turbulence model. Fifty random cases of irregularity and angle of attack (AOA) are selected, and the results from these cases are utilised for developing the surrogate models. Parametric equations are predicted for all these aerodynamic coefficients, and the training of these outcomes are also done for developing Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). After achieving the target acceptance criteria, the observed results are compared with the primary CFD data. Both parametric equations and ANN matched very well with the obtained data. The results are further utilised for discussing the effects of irregularity on the most critical wind condition.

Flow prediction was carried out through observational survey and three dimensional multi-layered numerical diagnostic model experiment to clarify the time and spatial structure of tidal current and residual flow dominant in the sea exchange and material circulation of the waters around Geumo Islands in the southern waters of Korea. The horizontal variation of tidal current is so large that it causes asymmetric tidal mixing due to horizontal eddies and the topographical effect creating convergence and dispersion of flow direction and velocity. Due to strong tidal currents flowing northwest-southeast, counterclockwise and clockwise eddies are formed on the left and right sides of the south of Sori Island. These topographical eddies are created by horizontal turbulence and bottom friction causing nonlinear effects. Baroclinic density flows are less than 5 cm/s at coastal area in summer and the entire sea area in winter. The wind driven currents assuming summer and winter seasonal winds are also less than 5 cm/s and the current flow rate is high in winter. Density current in summer and wind driven current in winter have a relatively greater effect on the net residual flows (tidal residual current + density current + density driven current) around Geumo Islands Sea area.
The formation mechanism of the vortex streets in the lee of the mountain Is Investigated by a three-dimensional numerical model. The model is based upon the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations in which the vertical turbulent momentum flux is estimated by a turbulence parameterization scheme, but the horizontal viscosity is assumed to be constant. The results show that Karman vortex streets can form even without surface friction in a constant ambient flow with uniform stratification. The vortex formation is related to breaking of the mountain wave, which depends on the Froude number (Fr). In the case of a three-dimensional bell-shaped mountain, the wave breaking occurs when Fr is less than about 0.8, while a barman vortex forms when Fr is less than about 0.22. Vortex formation also depends on Reynolds number, which is estimated from the horizontal diffusivity. The vortex formation can be explained by the wave saturation theory given by Lindzen (1981) with some modification. Simulations in this study show that in the case of Karman vortex formation the momentum flux in the lower level is much larger than the saturated momentum flux, whereas it is almost equal to the saturated momentum at the upper levels as expected from the saturation theory. As a result, large flux divergence is produced in the lower layer, the mean flow is decelerated behind the mountain, and the horizontal wind shear forms between unmodified ambient wind. The momentum exchange between the mean flow and the mountain wave is produced by the turbulence within a breaking wave. From the result, well developed vortices like Karman vortex can be formed. . The results of the momentum budget calculated by the hydrostatic model are almost the same as nonhydrostatic results as long as horizontal scale of the mountain is 10 km. A well developed barman vortex similar to the hydrostatic one was simulated in the nonhydrostatic case. Therefore, we conclude that the hydrostatic assumption is adequate to investigate the origin of the Km8n vortex from the viewpoint of wave breaking.

This paper is concerned with the development of a three-dimensional numerical model for coastal circulation and heat transport with improved prediction ability. The model uses fully nonlinear, time-dependent three-dimensional, $\sigma$-transformed equations of motion and equation of heat transport The model was verified with experimental data for wind-driven current in a one-dimensional channel and thermal jets flowing into stagnant waters and applied for unsteady flow induced by tide and thermal jets in coastal waters around Kori nuclear power plant. The model results were in good agreements with experimental data sets for wind-driven current and thermal jet, and field observed data sets in coastal waters. This study has shown that the $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is applicable to various coastal conditions without any modification of turbulence constants.

The interior vehicle noise due to the exterior aerodynamic field is an important topic in the acoustic design of a car. The air flow detached from the A-pillar and impacting the side windows are of particular interest as they are located close to the driver / passenger and provides a lower insulation index than the trimmed car body parts. HMC is interested in the numerical prediction of this aerodynamic noise generated by the car windows with the final objective of improving the products design and reducing this noise. The methodology proposed in this paper relies on two steps: the first step involves the computation of the exterior flow and turbulence induced non-linear acoustic field using the CAA(Computational aeroacoustics) solver CAA++. The second step consists in the computation of the vibro-acoustic transmission through the side window using the finite element vibro-acoustic solver Actran. The internal air cavity including trim component are included in the simulation. In order to validate the numerical process, an experimental set-up has been created based on a generic car shape. The car body includes the windshield and two side windows. The body is made of aluminum and trimmed with porous layers. First, this paper describes the method including the CAA and the vibro-acoustic models, from the boundary conditions to the different components involved, like the windows, the trims and the car cavity is detailed. In a second step, the experimental set-up is described. In the last part, the vibration of the windshield and windows, the total wind noise level results and the relative contributions of the different windows are then presented and compared to measurements. The influence of the flow yaw angle (different wind orientation) is also assessed.
This study investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of NACA series airfoil by altering the trailing edge in the form of extended and serrated sections. This contemporary advent examined NACA 0020 airfoil experimentally at the angle of attack ranging from 0° to 45° and for the Reynolds number of 2.46 × 105. To figure out the flow behaviour, the standard average pressure distribution over the airfoil surface is estimated with 50 pressure taps. The time series surface pressure is recorded for 700 Hz of sampling frequency. The extended trailing edge of 0.1 c, 0.2 c and 0.3 c are attached to the base airfoil. Further, the triangular serration is introduced with the base length of 2 cm, 4 cm and 6 cm. Each base length with three different amplitudes of 0.1 c, 0.2 c and 0.3 c were designed and equipped with the baseline case at the trailing edge and tested. The aerodynamic force coefficient, as well as pressure coefficient are presented. The obtained data advises that modification in the trailing edge will reflect the aerodynamic characteristics and the flow behaviour over the section of a wing. Resultantly, the extended trailing edge as a thin elongated surface attached to a base airfoil without revising the main airfoil favors good lift increment. The serrated trailing edge acts as a flow control device by altering the flow pattern results to delay the stall phenomenon. Besides it, improves lift co-efficient with less amount of additional drag. This extended and serrated trailing edge approach can support for designing the future smart airfoil.
This paper proposes a novel airfoil named "KA2" for the blade of the wind turbine systems. Dynamic loads characteristics are analyzed and compared using aerodynamic data of ten airfoils including the proposed airfoil. The blade is divided into the sixteen elements in the longitudinal direction of the blade for applying the Blade Element Method Theory (BEMT) method, and in each element, torque, thrust, and pitching moment are calculated using turbulent time varying wind speed and aerodynamic data of each wing. Additionally, each force and torque is accumulated in the whole region of the blade for the estimation of representative values. The magnitude of such forces is comparatively analyzed for different airfoils. The angle of attack is constant below the rated wind speed due to the fact that the tip speed ratio is kept at the constant value, and it increases in the region of over rated wind speed as the tip speed ratio decreasing with constant rated rpm and increasing wind speed. Such increase in the angle of attack causes the changes of the force acting on the airfoil with different characteristics of lift and drag in the stall region of each different airfoil. Even though the mean wind speed is in the rated speed in a given time, because of the turbulence, it has either the over rated or under rated speed most of the time. Furthermore, the dynamic properties of each force are analyzed in this rated wind speed in order to objectively understand the dynamic properties of the blades which are designed based on the different airfoils. These dynamic properties are also compared by the standard deviation of time varying characteristics. Moreover, the output characteristics of the wind turbine are investigated with different airfoils and wind speeds. Based on these investigations, it was revealed that the proposed airfoil (KA2) is well applicable to the blade with passive pitch control system.

Even though the variable pitch control of a wind turbine blade is known as an effective component for power control over the rated wind speed, it has limited applicability to small wind turbines because of its relatively high cost on the price of small wind turbine. Instead, stall control is generally applied in the blade design without any additional cost. However, stall delay can frequently be caused by high turbulence around the turbine blade, and it can produce control failures through excessive rotational speed and overpowering the electrical generator. Therefore, a passive pitch control module should be considered, where the pitch moves with the aerodynamic forces of the blade and returns by the elastic restoring force. In this study, a method to calculate the pitch moment, torque, and thrust based on the lift and drag of the rotating blade wing was demonstrated, and several effective wing shapes were reviewed based on these forces. Their characteristics will be estimated with variable wind speed and be utilized as basic data for the design of the passive pitch control module.
