This study focuses on an advanced second-order sliding mode control strategy for a variable speed wind turbine based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator to maximize wind power extraction while simultaneously reducing the mechanical stress effect. The control design based on a modified version of the super-twisting algorithm with variable gains can be applied to the cascaded system scheme comprising the current control loop and speed control loop. The proposed control inheriting the well-known robustness of the sliding technique successfully deals with the problems of essential nonlinearity of wind turbine systems, the effects of disturbance regarding variation on the parameters, and the random nature of wind speed. In addition, the advantages of the adaptive gains and the smoothness of the control action strongly reduce the chatter signals of wind turbine systems. Finally, with comparison with the traditional super-twisting algorithm, the performance of the system is verified through simulation results under wind speed turbulence and parameter variations.
Because concern on the problem of the limited energy is growing and the wind energy is considered as one of the biggest solutions, the researches on the wind energy and turbine are accomplished vigorously. The simulation tools on the non-linear characteristics of wind turbine system are various and it could describe the non-linear characteristics well but, the tool and methodology to apply non-linear control theory rarely exist. In this paper, the application procedure of sliding mode control theory to 2-DOF non-linear wind turbine system is suggested and the application results of it are also shown as compared with a torque loop control theory.
This paper deals with the application of LQ control to the power curve tracking control of wind turbine. However, two more additional tasks are required to apply the LQR theory to wind turbine control. One is the tracking problem instead of regulation, because the wind turbine is controlled as variable speed and variable pitch. The other is LQ integral control., because the rotor speed should be tightly controlled without any steady state error. Starting from the analysis of wind characteristics, design requirement of a wind turbine control system is defined. A design procedure of LQ tracking with integral control is introduced. The performance of LQ tracking system is analyzed and evaluated by numeric simulation.

In this paper, a wind turbine with power splitting transmission, which is realized through a novel three-shaft planetary, is presented. The input shaft of the transmission is driven by the rotor of the wind turbine, the output shaft is connected to the grid via the main generator (asynchronous generator), and the third shaft is driven by a control motor with variable speed. The dynamic models of the sub systems of this wind turbine, e.g. the rotor aerodynamics, the drive train dynamics and the power generation unit dynamics, were given and linearized at an operating point. These sub models were integrated in a multidisciplinary dynamic model, which is suitable for control syntheses to optimize the utilization of wind energy and to reduce the excessive dynamic loads. The important dynamic behaviours were investigated and a wind turbine with a soft main shaft was recommend.
Aerodynamic torque of wind turbine has nonlinear properties. Nonlinearity of aerodynamic torque is very important in wind turbine in the aspect of control. The traditional torque control method using optimal mode gain has been applied in many wind turbines but its response is slower as wind turbine size is larger. In this paper, a torque control method using a nonlinear parameter of rotor speed among nonlinear properties of aerodynamic torque. Simulink model is implemented to obtain the nonlinear parameter of rotor speed and numerical simulations for a 2MW wind turbine are carried out and simulation results for the traditional and proposed torque control methods are compared.
5MW wind turbine is regarded as a promising system for offshore wind farms in the western sea of Korean. And the wind turbine is developed in many companies but not much information is known about it. In this study, aerodynamics and control characteristics depending on several control methods is reviewed on 5MW wind turbine, in which configuration data of the turbine are used from the previous study of NREL. For the calculations, GH_Bladed, which is certificated software by GL, is used and compared with data from FAST code of NREL. This study shows that how much power production, and aerodynamic performances and loads can be obtained with different controls in the operation of 5MW wind turbine, which is expected to be useful in the design of the wind turbine system.
This paper deals with a pitch control for reducing load of the wind turbine system. To make a model of the wind turbine system, the Momentum Theory and Blade Element Theory are used. Considering wind shear, wind model was also built. Due to a difference of the wind speed between upper parts and lower parts of the sweep area, overturning moment of the wind turbine is generated. So, in this paper through analyzing of the system model of the wind turbine, a control algorithm which was able to achieve both maintaining power and reducing overturning moment was proposed. Using matlab simulink, controller performance was verified.
Because of the nature of wind, the output power of wind turbines fluctuates according to wind speed variation. Therefore, many countries have set up wind-turbine interconnection standards usually named as Grid-Code to regulate the output power of wind farms to improve power system reliability and power quality. This paper proposes three operation modes of wind farms such as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode, single wind turbine control mode and wind farm control mode to control the output power of wind turbines as well as overall wind farms. This paper also proposes an operation scheme of wind farm to alleviate power fluctuation of wind farm by choosing the appropriate control mode and coordinating multiple wind turbines in consideration of grid conditions. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified via simulation studies in PSCAD/EMTDC with doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine models.
A design methodology for control strategy and control structure gives a direct impact on wind turbine's performance and life cycle. A baseline control law which is a variable rotor speed and variable pitch control strategy is introduced, and a mathematic performance model of a wind turbine dynamics is derived. By using a numeric optimization algorithm, the steady state operating conditions of wind turbines are identified. Because aerodynamic interaction of winds with rotor blades is basically nonlinear, a linearization procedure is applied to analyze wind turbine dynamic variations for whole operating conditions. It turns out the wind turbine dynamics vary much depending on its operating condition.
As wind power has increased steadily, the importance of a condition monitoring system is being emphasized to maximize the availability and reliability of a wind turbine. To develop the advanced algorithms for fault detection and lifespan estimation, a wind turbine simulator is essential for verification of the proposed algorithms before applying them to a condition diagnosis & integrity prognosis system. The developed new-type simulator in this paper includes blades and various sensors as well as a motor, a gearbox and a generator of which the existing simulators generally consist. It also has similarity with a 3MW class wind turbine and can be used to acquire operational data from various operation conditions. This paper presents a design method of control logic for the wind turbine simulator, which gives a wind generation method and similar dynamic characteristics with the 3MW wind turbine. Finally, the proposed control logic is verified through experiments.
