Small horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) can be used to produce power in areas where the wind conditions are not favorable or optimal for large HAWTs. A newly designed airfoil for use in small HAWTs was analyzed in CFD to predict the aerodynamic performance at various Reynolds numbers over a various angles of attack. The coefficient of lift and drag, CL and CD, and the pressure distribution over the airfoil was obtained. It was found that the airfoil could achieve very good aerodynamic characteristics. The results of the numerical analysis will be compared against experimental data for validation purposes.
This study is to investigate the effect of interference between two C-shaped high-rise buildings by computational fluid dynamics (CFD), focusing on the variation of the local pressure coefficient (CP) and the mean pressure coefficient (CPMEAN). Sixteen building position cases are considered for the present study. These cases were based on the position and height of the interference building (IB). The pressure coefficient (CP) is calculated on the principal building (PB) and is compared with an isolated building identical in shape and size. The interference effect on PB has also been presented in reference for the interference factor (IF). According to the findings, the maximum force coefficient on the PB is 0.971 and it is 10.97% more than the isolated PB when IB is located at position 2b (two times the width of the building), and the interfering height of 13H/15 mm. The moment coefficient on PB is 1.27, which is 27.36% less than the isolated case in which IB pushed 2b to 3b in the y direction with 750 mm height. In most of the cases, because of the shielding effect of the IB, the value of force coefficient (CF) on PB has been reduced. On the face of the PB, there are also considerable differences in the mean pressure coefficient CPMEAN. When IB was positioned at a location of 2b in Y direction and an interfering height of 13H/15 mm, the maximum CPMEAN (1.58) was observed on the leeward face of PB.
The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to calculate and examine the complex 3-D stall phenomena on the rotor blade and wake distribution of the wind turbine. The flow characteristics of 500kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) are compared with the calculated 3-D stall phenomena and wake distribution. We used the CFX-TASCflow to predict flow and power characteristics of the wind turbine. The CFD results are somewhat consistent with the BEM (Blade Element Momentum) results. And, the rotational speed becomes faster, the 3-D stall region becomes smaller. Moreover, the pressure distribution on the pressure side that directly gets the incoming wind grows high as it goes toward the tip of the blade. The pressure distribution on the blade's suction side tells us that the pressure becomes low in the leading edge of the airfoil as it moves from the hub to the tip. However, we are not able to precisely predict on the power coefficient of the rotor blade at the position of generating complex 3-D stall region.
Gusts generated by downburst have caused a great variety of structural damages in many regions around the world. It is of great significance to accurately evaluate the downburst-induced wind load on high-rise building for the wind resistance design. The main objective of this paper is to propose a computational modeling approach which can satisfactorily predict the mean and fluctuating wind pressure coefficients induced by downburst on high-rise building surfaces. In this study, using an impinging jet to simulate downburst-like wind, and simultaneous pressure measurements are obtained on a high-rise building model at different radial locations. The model test data are used as the database for developing back propagation neural network (BPNN) models. Comparisons between the BPNN prediction results and those from impinging jet test demonstrate that the BPNN-based method can satisfactorily and efficiently predict the downburst-induced wind pressure coefficients on single and overall surfaces of high-rise building at various radial locations.
This paper discuss the conditionally sampled actual wind pressure distributions causing peak quasi-static wind loads in the large span roofs using the wind pressures at many locations on dome models measured simultaneously in a wind tunnel. The actual extreme pressure distributions are compared itk load-response-correlation (LRC) method and the quasi-steady pressure distributions. Based on the results, the reason for the discrepancy in the LRC pressure distribution and the actual extreme pressure distribution are discussed. Futhermore, a brief discussion is made of the equivalent static wind load estimation for the large span roofs.

The purpose of this work is to compare and analyze computed results with experimental data of NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase VI for the whole operating conditions of various wind speeds using $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Performance results such as power coefficient, shaft torque, pressure coefficient show a good agreement with experimental data. But, root bending moment is over-predicted than the experimentally measured value by about 30% for the whole operating conditions because of indefinite measurement reference. Nevertheless, these results qualitatively show a good tendency in the aspect of aerodynamic performance. As wind speed increases, streamlines on the surface of blade show more and more complex pattern.
This article presents a study of the largest-ever (height = 220 m) cooling tower using the large eddy simulation (LES) method. Information about fluid fields around the tower and 3D aerodynamic time history in full construction process were obtained, and the wind pressure distribution along the entire tower predicted by the developed model was compared with standard curves and measured curves to validate the effectiveness of the simulating method. Based on that, average wind pressure distribution and characteristics of fluid fields in the construction process of ultra-large cooling tower were investigated. The characteristics of fluid fields in full construction process and their working principles were investigated based on wind speeds and vorticities under different construction conditions. Then, time domain characteristics of ultra-large cooling towers in full construction process, including fluctuating wind loads, extreme wind loads, lift and drag coefficients, and relationship of measuring points, were studied and fitting formula of extreme wind load as a function of height was developed based on the nonlinear least square method. Additionally, the frequency domain characteristics of wind loads on the constructing tower, including wind pressure power spectrum at typical measuring points, lift and drag power spectrum, circumferential correlations between typical measuring points, and vertical correlations of lift coefficient and drag coefficient, were analyzed. The results revealed that the random characteristics of fluctuating wind loads, as well as corresponding extreme wind pressure and power spectra curves, varied significantly and in real time with the height of the constructing tower. This study provides references for design of wind loads during construction period of ultra-large cooling towers.
Analysis of pressures measured on the roof of the full-scale Texas Tech building and a 1/50 scale model of a typical house showed that the pressure fluctuations on cladding fastener and cladding-truss connection tributary areas have similar characteristics. The probability density functions of pressure fluctuations on these areas are negatively skewed from Gaussian, with pressure peak factors less than -5.5. The fluctuating pressure energy is mostly contained at full-scale frequencies of up to about 0.6 Hz. Pressure coefficients, $C_p$ and local pressure factors, $K_l$ given in the Australian wind load standard AS1170.2 are generally satisfactory, except for some small cladding fastener tributary areas near the edges.
For a systematic study on wind-induced vibration characteristics of large hyperbolic cooling towers with different feature sizes, the pressure measurement tests are finished on the rigid body models of three representative cooling towers with the height of 155 m, 177 m and 215 m respectively. Combining the refined frequency-domain algorithm of wind-induced responses, the wind-induced average response, resonant response, background response, coupling response and wind vibration coefficients of large cooling towers with different feature sizes are obtained. Based on the calculating results, the parametric analysis on wind-induced vibration of cooling towers is carried out, e.g. the feature sizes, damping ratio and the interference effect of surrounding buildings. The discussion shows that the increase of feature sizes makes wind-induced average response and fluctuating response larger correspondingly, and the proportion of resonant response also gradually increased, but it has little effect on the wind vibration coefficient. The increase of damping ratio makes resonant response and the wind vibration coefficient decreases obviously, which brings about no effect on average response and background response. The interference effect of surrounding buildings makes the fluctuating response and wind vibration coefficient increased significantly, furthermore, the increase ranges of resonant response is greater than background response.
Wind loading is one of important loadings that should be considered in the design of large hyperbolic natural-draught cooling towers. Both external and internal surfaces of cooling tower are under the action of wind loading for cooling circulating water. In the previous studies, the wind loads on the external surface attracted concernedly attention, while the study on the internal surface was relatively ware. In the present study, the wind pressure on the internal surface of a 220 m high cooling tower is measured through wind tunnel testing, and the effect of ventilation rate of the packing layer on internal pressure is a major concern. The characteristics of internal wind pressure distribution and its effect on wind-induced responses calculated by finite element method are investigated. The results indicate that the wind loading on internal surface of the cooling tower behaves remarkable three-dimensional effect, and the pressure coefficient varies along both of height and circumferential directions. The non-uniformity is particularly strong during the construction stage. Analysis results of the effect of internal pressure on wind-induced responses show that the size and distribution characteristics of internal pressure will have some influence on wind-induced response, however, the outer pressure plays a dominant role in the wind-induced response of cooling tower, and the contribution of internal pressure to the response is small.
