A butterfly web girder is a box-shaped girder with discretely distributed side openings along the spanwise direction. Until now, there have been few studies related to the aerodynamic performance of the butterfly web bridge. The objective of the current study was to clarify the effects of the side openings on the aerodynamic performance of the girder. Two butterfly web girders with side ratios B/D = 3.24 and 5, where B is the girder width and D is the depth, were examined through a series of wind tunnel tests. A comparison of the results for butterfly web girders and conventional box girders of the same shape confirmed that the side openings stabilized the vortex-induced vibration and galloping when B/D = 3.24, whereas the vortex-induced vibration and torsional flutter were stabilized when B/D = 5. The change in the flow field due to the side openings contributed to the stabilization against the vibration. These findings not only confirmed the good aerodynamic performance of the butterfly web bridge but also provided a new method to stabilize the box girder against aerodynamic instabilities via discretely distributed side openings.

The effect of electric fields on the response of diffusion flames in a counterflow has been investigated experimentally by varying the AC voltage and frequency. The result showed that the flame was stationary with high AC frequency above the threshold frequency, and it increased with the applied voltage and then leveled off at 35 Hz. Below the threshold frequency, however, the flame oscillated with a frequency that was synchronized with the applied AC frequency. This oscillation can be attributed to the ionic wind effect due to the generation of bulk flow, which arises from the momentum transfer by molecular collisions between neutral molecules and ions, where the ions in the reaction zone were accelerated by the Lorentz force.

Supercooled large droplet issues in aircraft icing have been continually reported due to the important safety considerations. In order to simulate the impingement behavior of large droplets, a two-dimensional and compressible Navier-Stokes code was developed to determine the flow field around the test model. Also, the Eulerian-based droplet impingement model including a semi-empirical approach for the droplet-wall interaction process and droplet break-up was developed. In particular, the droplet-wall interactions were considered as numerical boundary conditions for the droplet impingement simulation in the supercooled large droplet conditions. Finally, the present results were compared with the experimental test data and the LEWICE results. The droplet impingement area and maximum collection efficiency values between present results and wind tunnel data were in good agreements. Otherwise, the inclination of collection efficiency of the present result is over-predicted than the wind tunnel data around a lower surface of the NACA 23012 airfoil.
Jang Bogo Station (JBS), the second Korean Antarctic research station, was established in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica ($74.62^{\circ}S$$164.22^{\circ}E$) in February 2014 in order to expand the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) research capabilities. One of the main research areas at JBS is space environmental research. The goal of the research is to better understand the general characteristics of the polar region ionosphere and thermosphere and their responses to solar wind and the magnetosphere. Ground-based observations at JBS for upper atmospheric wind and temperature measurements using the Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) began in March 2014. Ionospheric radar (VIPIR) measurements have been collected since 2015 to monitor the state of the polar ionosphere for electron density height profiles, horizontal density gradients, and ion drifts. To investigate the magnetosphere and geomagnetic field variations, a search-coil magnetometer and vector magnetometer were installed in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Since JBS is positioned in an ideal location for auroral observations, we installed an auroral all-sky imager with a color sensor in January 2018 to study substorms as well as auroras. In addition to these observations, we are also operating a proton auroral imager, airglow imager, global positioning system total electron content (GPS TEC)/scintillation monitor, and neutron monitor in collaboration with other institutes. In this article, we briefly introduce the observational activities performed at JBS and the preliminary results of these observations.

In this study, wave model was conducted on the presence or absence of water level changes and currents effects in coastal waters coexisting with waves and currents, then the results were compared. The flow field applied the results of the RIAMOM model and the wave model applied the SWAN model. Among ECMWF, NCEP and JMA, wind data applied JMA data sets which agreed well with the observed data comparatively. Numerical simulation was conducted for 8 months from January to August 2016. For each case, the deviation of wave height was calculated for the high wave of more than 2.5 m for comparison with observed data. As a result, the deviation of wave height was not significant both considering water level changes and currents effects or not at wave observation stations installed in deep waters. However, a significant deviation of wave height of 5~10% was obtained depending on water level changes and currents effects at the comparison point in shallow waters.

In evaluating lateral behavior on the seismic and wind load, the purpose of sensitivity analysis is to find critical variables and to identify characteristic response with variability of variables. The sensitivity analysis is very important in structural diagnosis, repair and reinforcement field. This study investigates the sensitivity by linear static analysis applying the TDA method in changing angles of diagrid braces on the same height structures. In case of mid rise model, under the seismic load, the brace member is determined as a major variable at $58^{\circ}$ but a high rise model, under the wind load, has the brace member as a major variable at $67.4^{\circ}$. In addition, location of critical sensitivity on the mid rise model is distributed over middle section, while it is distributed lower section on the high rise model.

Recently a passive $NO_2$ samplers have been frequently used for the measurement of $NO_2$ concentration in the atmosphere because of its simplicity and high accuracy. But these samplers have a defect that the amount of $NO_2$ adsorbed is increased by wind. In this study, the inlet of sampler was covered with a draft shield made by 325 mesh stainless sieve to eliminate the effect. But it was expected that $NO_2$ diffusion was interrupted by the draft shield. In order to conform this phenomenon, samplers with and without draft shield were exposed to a box filled with 1-1.1ppm $NO_2$. The result indicated that draft shield nearly did not disturb $NO_2$ diffusion. To protect samplers from dust, sunshine, precipitation and vertical wind effects, these samplers were placed into a shelter during the field test. The data obtained in this study was compared with the data from the ambient air monitoring network. The coefficient of correlation(r) between the two data was 0.9995 for the test period of up to 35days. The results of this study indicate that the type of $NO_2$ samplers with draft shield in shelter used in this study can be used for measuring $NO_2$ concentrations in the ambient air relatively for a long period over 30 days.

In this paper, a 1MW HAWT(FIL-1000) rotor blade has been designed by BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. Also, a 3-D flow and performance analysis on the FIL-1000 rotor blade has been carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver (CFX-5.7) to provide more efficient design techniques to the large-scale HAWT engineers. The rated power and itsapproaching wind velocity at design point (TSR=7.5) are 1MW and 9.99m/s respectively. The rotor diameter is 54.5m and the rotating speed is 26.28rpm. Airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W-250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418, NACA 63415 consist of the rotor blade from hub to tip. Recent CFX version, 5.7 was adopted to simulate 3-D flow field and to analyze the performance characteristics of the rotor blade. Entire mesh node number is about 730,000 and it is generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better mesh quality The predicted maximum power occurringat the design tip speed ratio is 931.45kW. Approaching to the root, the inflow angle becomes large, which causesthe blade to be stalled in the region. Therefore, k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model was used to predict the quantitative flow information more accurately. Application of commercial CFD code to optimum blade design and performance analysis was proved to be more effective environment to HAWT blade designers.
A barrel is a high length-to-diameter ratio cylinder that is influenced by environmental factors such as sunlight, precipitation, wind and clouds. Cross-barrel temperature differences caused by uneven heating or cooling lead to thermal deformation that degrades accuracy. Therefore, a barrel is covered by thermal shrouds to minimize the type of thermal deformation, "fall-of-shot". In this paper, an analytical and experimental study is presented to design the thermal shrouds for a gun barrel and to evaluate the thermal shroud effect. First, an analytical study on the thermal shroud effect to minimize thermal deformation of a gun barrel by sunlight and wind is performed. The coupled analysis of thermal fluid dynamics of the air flow between a barrel and thermal shrouds and thermal stresses of a barrel Is performed to clarify both the thermal shroud effect and the drift in gun muzzle orientation by thermal deformation. Second, experiments are carried out to test and evaluate the thermal shroud effect on the performance of a gun barrel. The drift in gun muzzle orientation against the solar radiation is confirmed by the experiments, and the results well agree with the analytical estimation. Third, three principal design factors that are presumed to have an effect on the performance of the thermal shrouds are also analyzed; sorts of shroud materials, wall-thickness of thermal shrouds, and distance of the gap between a barrel and thermal shrouds.
Rapid progress in urbanization has resulted in a change of the micro climate, especially in the urban area. In order to investigate the phenomenon of the heat island in the residential micro climate, a field survey was carried out by 4 sets of the residential type in Jeonju under typical winter synoptic condition. As analytic methode, it is used the comparison on the relation of the Land-to-Coverage Rate to Heat Island and Oxygen Concentration. And as a key question it is asked how stable characteristics of the micro climate will result from the survey of the Heat Island and the Oxygen Concentration, used as indicator. To ensure the trustworthy result of research, it is calculated the critical influence of the wind velocity and the Land-to-Covearage Rate. As a result of comparative analysis, it could be confirmed that the local temperatures in all sets of the residential type were higher than the average temperature in Jeonju. But the housing type A 'exclusive use for housing zone' has relativly the most stable and best living condition. On the contrary the residential type B and D has the worst toward the oxygen concentration in the time zone 9-12 a.m., which didn't reach the minimum of the oxygen concentration $20.5{\%}.$ It means that the higer the development and population density is, the worse is the situation of the Quality of Life in the residential types in accordance with the heat island and oxygon concentration.
