  • Thymelaeaceae in Korea includes ten species in five genera (Daphne, Diarthron, Edgeworthia, Stellera, and Wikstroemia). This study investigated the morphology of these species using herbarium specimens and fresh materials obtained during fieldwork to understand the variation level and to delineate each taxon in the family. Our comparative morphological analysis showed that the Korean taxa in Thymelaeaceae were easily distinguished based on their morphologies. It is easy to distinguish Daphne from Wikstroemia when the Korean taxa are considered. However, Daphne genkwa is morphologically similar to Wikstroemia based on the leaf arrangement, pubescence of the leaves, and the ovary shape. The results here suggest that further systematic studies of the Daphne group using more data are necessary.

  • Daphne genkwa (Thymelaeaceae) is a small deciduous shrub widely cultivated as an ornamental. The complete chloroplast genome of this species is presented here. The genome is 132,741 bp long and has four subregions: 85,668 bp of large single-copy and 28,365 bp of small single-copy regions are separated by 9,354 bp of inverted repeat regions with 107 genes (71 protein-coding genes, four rRNAs, and 31 tRNAs) and one pseudogene. The phylogenetic tree shows that D. genkwa is nested within Wikstroemia and is not closely related to other species of Daphne, suggesting that it should be recognized as a species of Wikstroemia.

  • This study was conducted on propagation use for conservation scheme of a threatened plant; Wikstroemia ganpi (Sieb. et Zucc.) Maxim(Geomundo false ohelo). The seed propagation was showed higher (95%) in storage and lower values in ground and cutting. Softwood cutting was higher than hardwood cutting and it was possessing higher ratio of rooting that increase concentration of IBA and NAA. It was determined that for Geomundo false ohelo seedling was effective than cutting. In-situ and ex-situ conservation and restoration of substitute habitats of Geomundo false ohelo is therefore necessary due to human trampling in the habitats, damage, natural selection, loss and suppression.

  • The present study was to survey the site environment, vegetation structure and soil characteristics in the wild habitats of Wikstroemia ganpi in Goheung, Busan and Ulsan, and offers basic information for habitat conservation and restoration. Most of the wild habitats were located at altitudes between 28~242m with inclinations ranged as $0{\sim}40^{\circ}$. The canopy openness was 57.56%. The vegetation structure by the PC-ORD based on the Two Way Cluster Analysis were divided into three groups Community I(Castanea crenata-Pinus densiflora), Community II(Quercus dentata-Pinus thunbergii) and Community III (Pinus thunbergii). The species diversity was 1.3650, and evenness and dominance were found recorded as 0.8666 and 0.1333, respectively. The soil textures were silty loam and sandy loam. The average soil pH was 5.5, electric conductivity was 0.15dS/m, soil organic matter was 2.60% and available phosphorus was 4mg $kg^{-1}$. Correlation coefficients based on environmental factors, vegetation and soil analysis were showed that positive correlations between species diversity and evenness, organic matter and total nitrogen, whereas species slop degree and coverage of herb, diversity and dominance were showed negative correlations.

  • Pollen morphology of four genera (Daphne L. - 4 spp., Edgeworthia Meisn. - 1 sp., Wikstroemia Endl. - 2 spp., and Stellera L. 1 sp.), except 1 taxon (Diarthron Turcz. - 1 sp.) in Korean Thymelaeaceae were examined with light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The size of grains ($11.3-60.0{\mu}m$) are varied from small (in Stellera) through medium (in Daphne and Wikstroemia) to large (in Edgeworthia). All studied taxa have monad, spheroidal, pantoporate (10-20) grains. The exine is reticulate, especially a typical "croton pattern" which is comprising rings of more or less trihedral subunits. Each triangular subunit is topped by a single microspinule, and the surface pattern is psilale. In Daphne, three types of subunit arrangement can be recognized; - (1) Type I : subunits are arranged circles and attached to each other or sometimes fused in part, (2) Type II: each subunit is trihedral and isolated distinctly, and (3) Type III: each subunit is isolated, but somewhat vague. Systematic implication of the present pollen data for the Korean Thymelaeaceae is also briefly discussed.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) produced in large amounts by the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is known to be responsible for the vasodilation and hypotension observed in septic shock and inflammation. The inhibitors of iNOS, thus, may be useful candidate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases accompanied by the overproduction of NO. We prepared alcoholic extracts of Chinese medicinal plants and screened their inhibitory activity against NO production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages. Among the 80 kinds of extracts of herbal drugs, 15 extracts showed potent inhibitory activity of NO production above 80% at the concentration o$50\mu\textrm{g}/ml$. These potent extracts showed dose dependent inhibition of NO production of LPS-activated macrophages at the concentration of 50, 30,$10\mu\textrm{g}/ml$. Especially, Rhus chinensis, Senecio scandens and Wikstroemia indica showed most potent inhibition above 50% at the concentration of $10\mu\textrm{g}/ml$. These plants are promising candidates for the study of the activity-guided purification of active compounds and would be useful for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and endotoxemia accompanying the overproduction of NO.
