  • We have investigated the high temperature rapid thermal annealing of GaN epilayers in nitrogen atmosphere. Annealing has been performed in a rapid thermal annealing furnace at $950^{\circ}C$. The effect of rapid thermal annealing of GaN was studied by x-ray diffraction. The Bragg peak shifts toward larger angle as the annealing time increases. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the peak slightly increase, followed by decreases, and increases again as the thermal treatment time increases. The improvement of structural properties of the samples was observed after rapid thermal annealing under optimum conditions. This improvement in crystal quality is due to a reduction of the spread in the lattice parameter in epilayers.

  • The aim of this research was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of glued laminated lumber (glulam) made from jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) and pine (Pinus merkusii). Three layers of lamina from each wood species were bonded using isocyanate adhesive with a glue spread of $280g{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and then pressed using cold press with a specific pressure of 1.47 MPa. Samples had dimensions of $3cm{\times}6cm{\times}100cm$ (thickness, width, and length, respectively). Glulam properties were tested based on Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) 234-2003. The results showed that the density of glulam was $0.36g{\cdot}m^{-3}$ for jabon and $0.73g{\cdot}m^{-3}$ for pine. The moisture content of all glulams fulfilled the JAS standard. The mechanical properties of pine glulam fulfilled the JAS standard in all tests, whereas jabon glulam fulfilled the standard in the modulus of rupture and shear tests.

  • In 1997, a new disease on creeping bentgrass and Kentucky bluegrass occurred in the green and fairway of a few golf courses in Korea. The disease spread gradually throughout the country and became a threat to turfgrass management. Symptoms of the disease consisted of small, circular, and sunken patches sized 3~5cm in diameter. The disease named as a dollar spot following its characteristic symptoms of circular blight and bleach on the green. The disease peaked two times in a year from April to June and from late August to October and white cottony mycelia of the causal fungus developed on diseased turfs in the early morning when the conditions were favored. A causal fungus was consistently isolated from the infected tufgrass and seven isolates originated from seven golf courses located in six provinces were selected for further study. The fungus produced abundant white aerial mycelia on PDA and turned to dark gray or light brown as it aged. Width of the mycelium was ca. $5~8\mu\textrm{m}$. While sclerotia were not readily formed on the medium, scattered small and dark colored stromata were developed on the surface. The fungus grew well on PDA between 5 to $30^{\circ}C$ and maximally around $25^{\circ}C$. Based on investigated mycological and cultural characteristics, the causal agent of dollar spot was identified as Sclerotinia homoeocarpa. The fungus showed strong pathogenicity to several turfs as creeping bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescues, and zoysiagrass.

  • A destructive stem rot of strawberry (cv. Akihime) occurred sporadically in farmers' fields around Daegok-Myeon, Jinju City, Gyeongnam province in Korea. The infected plants showed stem and crown rot, sometimes whole plant blighted. White mycelia spread over stems of infected clones and sclerotia formed on the old lesions near to soil surface. The fungus formed white colony on PDA and showed maximum mycelial growth and scleotial formation around 30$^{\circ}C$. The fungus usually have many narrow mycelial strands in the aerial mycelium and the width were 4.0∼10.0$\mu\textrm{m}$. The typical clamp connections were formed on the mycelium. The shape of sclerotia was globoid and 1.0∼2.8 mm in size. The fungus was isolated repeatedly from the infected tissues and identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. The fungus was inoculated to strawberry and confirmed its pathogenecity This is the first report on the stem rot of strawberry caused by Scierotium rolfsii in Korea.

  • Grey leaf spot on tomato plants was first observed in Sedo-myeon, Puyo-kun, Chungnam province of Korea in 1994. This disease which had not been reported before in Korea exhibited different symptoms from those of other leaf spot diseases on tomato plants. The symptoms were characterized by small irregular-shaped spots on leaves at the initial stage of the infection, subsequent spread and coalescence of the spots throughout the leaves with ultimate necrosis, and abscission from the plants. When healthy tomato plants were inoculated with a conidial suspension of the fungus isolated from the lesion of a diseased plant in a field, the same characteristic symptoms as those in the field were produced. Furthermore, the same pathogen could be reisolated from the lesions formed buy the inoculation. Conidial characteristics of the pathogen were as follows; oblong shape with constricted 3 transverse septa, round-shaped base, round- or point-shaped apex, size of 45~75$\times$12.5~17.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 3.5 : 1 ratio of length to width. The pathogen was identified as Stemphylium lycopersici and thus this is the first report on the occurrence of grey leaf spot disease on tomato plants caused by s. lycopersici in Korea.

  • The stem rot of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) occurred sporadically in the experimental field of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, on September, 2009. The infected plants were wilted and water-soaked brown spots were formed on the stem, than infected stems were mostly died. White mycelial mats were spread over lesions, and then sclerotia were formed on stem and near soil line. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, 1~3 mm in size and white to brown in color. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation on PDA was $30^{\circ}C$ and the hyphal width was $4{\sim}8\;{\mu}m$. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the pathogenic fungus. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to host plants, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report on the stem rot of sunflower by S. rolfsii in Korea.

  • A conventional linear accelerator system requires a flat-topped pulse with less than $\pm$ 0.5% ripple to meet the beam energy spread requirements and to improve pulse efficiency of RF systems. A a line-type pulsed modulator is widely used in pulsed power circuits for applications such as accelerators, radar, medical radiation, or ionization systems. The high-voltage pulse generator system with an output voltage of 284 kV, a pulse width of $10{\mu}s$, and a rise time of $0.84{\mu}s$ has been designed and fabricated to drive a klystron which has 30-MW peak and 60-kW average RF output power. The high-voltage test was performed using the klystron load. This thesis describes the design and test results of high-power pulse generator system for industrial accelerator application. The experimental results were analyzed and compared with the design.

  • Forward slip is an important parameter often used in rolling-speed control models for tandem hot strip rolling mills. In a hot strip mill, on-line measurement of strip speed is inherently very difficult. Therefore, for the set-up of the finishing mill, a forward slip model is used to calculate the strip speed from roll circumferential velocity at each mill stand. Due to its complexity, most previous researches have used semi-empirical methods in determining values for the forward slip. Although these investigations may be useful in process design and control, they do not have a theoretical basis. In the present study, a better forward slip model has been developed, which provides for a better set-up and more precise control of the mill. Factors such as neutral point, friction coefficient, width spread, shape of deformation zone in the roll bite are incorporated into the model. Implementation of the new forward slip model for the control of a 7-stand hot strip tandem rolling mill shows significant improvement in roll speed set-up accuracy.

  • One of the most important factors for determining the thermal performance of an evaporative cooling system is the wettability of the evaporative heat exchanger surface. Evaporation of a widely spread water film on the heat exchanger surface promotes heat transfer between the "dry" air and "wet" air passages. Hydrophilic coating is generally applied on the heat exchanger surfaces to increase the wettability of the heat exchanger surface and the COP of the evaporative cooling system. In this paper, a simple lamellar patterned structure is suggested to maximize the spreading of a water film on the vertically oriented walls. The capillary height of the lamellar structured grooves is analyzed through a theoretical model, and the results are compared with the numerical analysis through a finite element analysis tool, SE-FIT. A good agreement between the theoretical model and the numerical analysis can be observed as long as the channel depth is comparable to or larger than the channel width of the lamellar structure.

  • We developed an observation control software for the IGRINS (Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph) silt-viewing camera module, which points the astronomical target onto the spectroscopy slit and sends tracking feedbacks to the telescope control system. The point spread function (PSF) is not always symmetric. In addition, bright targets are easily saturated and shown as a donut shape. It is not trivial to define and find the center of the asymmetric PSF especially on a slit mask. We made a center balancing algorithm (CBA) following the concept of median. The CBA derives the expected center position along the slit-width axis by referencing the stray flux ratios of both upper and lower sides of the slit. We compared efficiencies of the CBA and those of a two-dimensional Gaussian fitting (2DGA) through simulations from observation images in order to evaluate the center finding algorithms. Both of the algorithms are now applied in observation and users can select the algorithm.
