  • Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) show a lot of advantages for display purposes. Because OLEDs provide white light emission with a high efficiency and stability, it is desirable to apply OLEDs as an illumination light source and back light in LCD displays. We synthesized new emissive materials, namely [2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole] ($Zn(HPB)_2$) and [(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole)(8-hydoxyquinoline)] (Zn(HPB)q), which have a low molecular compound and thermal stability. We studied white OLEDs using $Zn(HPB)_2$ and Zn(HPB)q. The fundamental structures of the white OLEDs were ITO/PEDOT:PSS (23 nm)/NPB (40 nm)/$Zn(HPB)_2$ (40 nm)/Zn(HPB)q (20 nm)/$Alq_3$ (10 nm)/LiAl (120 nm). As a result, we obtained a maximum luminance of $15325\;cd/m^2$ at a current density of $997\;mA/cm^2$. The CIE(Commission International de l'Eclairage) coordinates are (0.28, 0.35) at an applied voltage of 9.75 V.

  • We report inverted white OLEDs fabricated by full wet processes. We utilized inverted structure OLEDs since the structure was better for the realization of full wet fabrication of OLEDs. It was found that the performance of inverted OLEDs is comparable to that of conventional OLEDs. In this presentation, we will discuss in detail a few important issues on the full wet fabrication of OLEDs.

  • We studied optical and electrical properties of two-wavelength white tandem organic light-emitting diodes using red and blue materials. White fluorescent OLEDs were fabricated using Alq3 : Rubrene (3 vol.% 5 nm) / SH-1 : BD-2 (3 vol.% 25 nm) as emitting layer (EML). White single fluorescent OLED showed maximum current efficiency of 9.7 cd/A, and tandem fluorescent OLED showed 18.2 cd/A. Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of single and tandem fluorescent OLEDs was (0.385, 0.435), (0.442, 0.473) at $1,000cd/m^2$, respectively. White hybrid OLEDs were fabricated using SH-1 : BD-2 (3 vol.% 10 nm) / CBP : $Ir(mphmq)_2(acac)$ (2 vol.% 20 nm) as EML. White single hybrid OLED showed maximum current efficiency of 7.8 cd/A, and tandem hybrid OLED showed 26.4 cd/A. Maximum current efficiency of tandem hybrid OLED was more twice as high as single OLED. CIE coordinates of single hybrid OLED was (0.315, 0.333), and tandem hybrid OLED was (0.448, 0.363) at $1,000cd/m^2$. CIE coordinates in white tandem OLEDs compared to those for single OLEDs observed red shift. This work reveals that stacked white OLED showed current efficiency improvement and red shifted emission than single OLED.

  • In order to realize full color display, two approaches were used. The first method is the patterning of red, green, and blue emitters using a selective deposition. Another approach is based on a white-emitting diode, from which the three primary colors could be obtained by micro-patterned color filters. White-light-emitting organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) are attracting much attention recently due to potential applications such as backlights in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) or other illumination purposes. In order for the white OLEDs to be used as backlights in LCDs, the light emission should be bright and have Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). For obtaining white emission from OLEDs, different colours should be mixed with proper balances even though there are a few different methods for mixing colors. In this study, we will report a white organic electroluminescent device using exciton diffusion length concept.

  • We developed highly efficient fluorescent dopants for full-color OLEDs. For blue, green and red OLEDs, current efficiencies of 8.7cd/A, 20.5 cd/A and 11.4 cd/A at $10mA/cm^2$ were achieved, respectively. Lifetime of the blue device was estimated to be 23,000hours at an initial luminance of $1,000cd/m^2$. Moreover, long lifetime over 100,000 hours was estimated in the green and red devices. Furthermore, we obtained a three-component white OLED by using these new fluorescent materials. This white OLED shows a current efficiency of 16.1cd/A with extrapolated lifetime over 70,000 hours at $1,000cd/m^2$, and more excellent color reproducibility for full-color displays with color filters and general lighting, compared to previous fluorescent white OLEDs.

  • White-emitting OLEDs have been prepared that provide emission close to 6500 K color temperature (D65) with exceptional stability and high efficiency. The combination of host and dopant materials offers significant improvement for full color displays, in terms of power consumption, with minimal changes in color and efficiency with current density. These features are important for fabricating RGB and RGBW full color displays using white OLEDs with color filters.

  • Tandem OLED structures formed by connecting two or more low-voltage electroluminescent units (stacks) are effective for achieving high efficiency at low current density as well as long operational lifetime. We have fabricated white emitting tandem structures with two or three low-voltage white-emitting stacks using transparent organic "PN"-type connectors. Three- stack white tandem structures with efficiency greater than 24 cd/A at D65 and operational stability of about 110,000 h. (extrapolated) at $1000\;cd/m^2$ have been demonstrated. With a stacked structure, the power consumption for displays using an RGBW format can be reduced by 25% compared to previously described formulations. We have also fabricated advanced white tandem structures where the color gamut (NTSC x,y ratio) has been improved to greater than 70% using standard color filters. The white OLEDs can also be used to increase the colorrendering index CRI (>80%), an important consideration for solid-state lighting.
