Wheelsets are an important component affecting the dynamic characteristics of railway vehicles. Research on wheelsets has been conducted for a long time. It is possible to generate the restoring force by the individual torque control of the left and right wheels in the independently rotating wheelsets (IRWs). Although this method solves the problems of conventional wheelsets, such as the solid axle wheelsets, the restoring force control must be added to the existing traction force control, and the restoring force requires a higher precision and quicker response than the traction force. In this paper, we study the robust control strategy of wireless trams with independently rotating wheelsets. The interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) and the controller with the actual scale wireless tram are designed to verify the torque control performance. Moreover, we propose an open loop control method to test and verify the traction and restoring force control algorithm of the IRWs.
On a conventional rail vehicle, passive primary suspensions stabilize wheelsets in the longitudinal and yaw direction. However, these suspensions reduce the natural curving ability due to the profile of the wheels. Stabilizing and steering of the wheelsets generate the conflict problems in design process. Therefore, most systems are designed to guarantee the stability in spite of decreased curving performance. As a result, severe wear of the wheels and rails occur on tight curves and squeal noise on curving is high. Active steering has been proposed to satisfy stabilizing and steering performance simultaneously. This paper describes the possibility investigation about the application of the active steering bogie for a urban railway vehicle. Vehicles run on an amount of tight curves at mid or low speed in urban railways. Thus, it is important to reduce the wear and squeal noise between wheels and rails. Simulations show that active steering can be reduce the wear and squeal noise significantly compared to conventional systems.
The wheelset, its functions and position under the train is the prime safety-critical component. Whether in design, qualification, manufacturing or maintenance, the wheels and axles have been the focus of special attention at SNCF for over 25 years and the French Railways are actively involved in various Research and Development work towards interoperability between the railways, railway reliability and running safety.

Lateral force of wheel is important parameter when we evaluate the safety of a railway vehicle on curved track. The lateral force of wheel is influenced by the steering performance of wheelsets. Generally, in passive type vehicles, the steering performance of wheelsets is influenced by the parameters like primary spring stiffness, wheel base, conicity of the wheel profile, etc. But, the steering performance of passive type vehicle has its limit. To overcome the limit of the steering performance of passive type vehicle, active steering technology is being developed. In this paper, we analyze the lateral force of wheel and the safety of the railway vehicle on curved track by adopting the active steering technology. As results of dynamic analysis for vehicle model equipped with active steering system, the lateral force of wheel is reduced and the safety is improved remarkably.
The wheelsets are one of most important component: damages in wheel tread and press fitted axle are a significant cost for railway industry. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to use this method because of its high viscosity and because its sensitivity is affected by temperature. Also, due to noise echoes it is difficult to detect defects initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing. It is necessary to develop a non-destructive technique that is superior to conventional NDT techniques in order to ensure the safety of railway wheelset. In the present paper, the new NDT technique is applied to the detection of surface defects for railway wheelset. To detect the defects for railway wheelset, the sensor for defect detection is optimized and the tests are carried out with respect to surface and internal defects each other. The results show that the surface crack depth of 1.5 mm in press fitted axle and internal crack in wheel could be detected by using the new method. The ICFPD method is useful to detect the defect that initiated in the tread of railway wheelset.
The problem of wheel tread defects has become a major challenge for the health management of high-speed rail as a wheel defect with small radius deviation may suffice to give rise to severe damage on both the train bogie components and the track structure when a train runs at high speeds. It is thus highly desirable to detect the defects soon after their occurrences and then conduct wheel turning for the defective wheelsets. Online wheel condition monitoring using wheel impact load detector (WILD) can be an effective solution, since it can assess the wheel condition and detect potential defects during train passage. This study aims to develop an FBG-based track-side wheel condition monitoring method for the detection of wheel tread defects. The track-side sensing system uses two FBG strain gauge arrays mounted on the rail foot, measuring the dynamic strains of the paired rails excited by passing wheelsets. Each FBG array has a length of about 3 m, slightly longer than the wheel circumference to ensure a full coverage for the detection of any potential defect on the tread. A defect detection algorithm is developed for using the online-monitored rail responses to identify the potential wheel tread defects. This algorithm consists of three steps: 1) strain data pre-processing by using a data smoothing technique to remove the trends; 2) diagnosis of novel responses by outlier analysis for the normalized data; and 3) local defect identification by a refined analysis on the novel responses extracted in Step 2. To verify the proposed method, a field test was conducted using a test train incorporating defective wheels. The train ran at different speeds on an instrumented track with the purpose of wheel condition monitoring. By using the proposed method to process the monitoring data, all the defects were identified and the results agreed well with those from the static inspection of the wheelsets in the depot. A comparison is also drawn for the detection accuracy under different running speeds of the test train, and the results show that the proposed method can achieve a satisfactory accuracy in wheel defect detection when the train runs at a speed higher than 30 kph. Some minor defects with a depth of 0.05 mm~0.06 mm are also successfully detected.
THE RAILWAY VEHICLE IS CONSISTS OF CARBODY, BOGIE AND WHEELSETS, EACH OF COMPONENTS IS CONNECTED WITH RIGID MASS, SPRING AND DAMPER. EACH OF COMPONENTS HAS TRANSLATION MOTIONS OF LONGITUDINAL (X AXIS), LATERAL (Y AXIS) AND VERTICAL (Z AXIS) DIRECTIONS, ROTATION MOTIONS OF X, Y, Z AXIS WHICH ARE NAMED ROLLING, PITCHING AND YAWING. THE VIBRATION MODE OF RAILWAY VEHICLE IS DIFFICULT TO FIND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF MOTION DURING THE OPERATION ON THE TRACK BECAUSE THESE HAPPEN TO INDEPENDENCE OR DUPLICATION MOTION CAUSED BY VEHICLE, WHEEL/RAIL AND TRACK IRREGULARITY ETC. IT IS NAMED AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION THAT THE VIBRATION, WHICH WAS PASSED THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SUSPENSION, IS AFFECTED TO THE PASSENGER WITHOUT DAMPING. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES AN EXPERIENCE EVALUATION TO FIND THE CAUSE OF AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION WHICH WAS HAPPEN AT OPERATING SPEED 60KPH ZONE DURING THE MAINLINE TEST.
Dynamics of railway vehicles are strongly influenced by the wheel/rail contact forces. Wheel/rail contact geometric characteristics are important parameters to determining wheel/rail contact forces. In general, geometric relations between wheel and rail are represented by nonlinear functions of the wheelset lateral excursion and the relative yaw angle. There are some analytical and experimental studies to show the influences of the wheelset lateral displacement on wheel/rail geometric relations. Recently radial steering bogie which is designed to have flexible yaw motions of wheelsets was developed to improve curve negotiation performance. The radial steering bogie makes it important problem to study the effects of wheelset yaw motion on wheel/rail geometric relations. This paper describes the method to analyze 3-dimensional wheel/rail contact geometry considering wheelset yaw motion and describes also some computer simulation results.

The Korean tilting train called Hanvit 200 was launched recently in Korea to improve train speed up to 200 km/h at conventional lines. In this paper, we propose a HILS system for simulations of mechanical braking of the Hanvit 200 train using actual ASCU, actual dump valves, Simulink, dSPACE board, and ControlDesk software. In the proposed HILS system, dynamics of wheelsets, bogies and car body, brake force generation, creep force generations are realized via mathematical models, and anti-skid logic is realized using actual components. The validity of the proposed HILS system is demonstrated via comparing results of real-time and off-line simulations.
The safety evaluations of railway wheelsets make use of the static fracture toughness obtained in ingot materials. The static fracture toughness of wheelset materials has been extensively studied by experiments, but the dynamic fracture toughness with respect to wheelset materials has not been studied enough yet. It is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fracture mechanics depending on each location for a full-scale wheelset for high-speed trains, because the load state for each location of the wheelset while running is different the contact load between the wheel and rail, cyclic stress in the wheel plate, etc. This paper deals with the fracture toughness depend on load rates. The fracture toughness depending on load rate data shows that once the downward curve from quasi-static values was reached, subsequent values showed a slow increase with respect to the impact velocity. This means that dynamic fracture toughness should be considered in the design code of the wheelset material.
