This study shows the result of the survey conducted for male adults who had to use wheelchairs. The objectives of this study are to develop and improve the clothes for the disabled people and to make those garments put into practice. For this purpose, the survey was conducted at first so as to understand the situation of the disabled peoples wearing clothes and the garment demands. This survey is to suggest the suited form of the pants they want. The result of the study is as follows. 1) The average age of the subjects was 38.4 years old. They have used wheelchairs for 12 years on the average. Most subjects two limbs were paralyzed because of the acquired spinal paralysis. 60 percent of them were wearing the urine bags all the time. The average size of the pants they purchased was 39 inches, which means that their waist and abdominal circumstance were very big. 2) Regarding the situation of wearing habits, although the subjects usually purchased ready-to-wear, most of them are very dissatisfied with them. Especially, they considered the size as their main dissatisfaction. The main concern for buying garments was how comfortable and mobile they are while wearing them. They also needed outdoor garments. Lastly, they looked forward to the shop specialized in the garments for disabled people. 3) The functional pants for adult men using wheelchairs had the same zipper as that of general pants. The waist belt was made of rubber to reduce the pressure on waist and to cover 2 inches (5 cm) of waist circumference. Also it should be made to secure each button within the belt in accordance with size. Finally, it was designed as formal wrinkled pants that had pockets within the reach of hands when the disabled used wheelchairs.
In this paper, we propose a system for controlling the seat of the electric wheelchair depending on the slope of the terrain in real time by using the ATmega smart control based on the board. Smart control board includes a gyro sensor, an acceleration sensor and Tilt sensor, when the electric wheelchairs pass slope of the terrain, they use three sensors to identify terrain configuration in real time. We also applied the Complementary Filter in the gyro sensor and acceleration sensor, so the electric wheelchairs know the exact terrain by solving the interference during the movement. Based on this, the noise power wheelchair due to the movement will be reduced, the seat continues reliably movement without being vibration. In this paper, providing an application on the smart phone platform for the convenience of users who are not familiar with how to use electric wheelchairs, they can easily control wheelchairs. Control platform of the smart phone is able to monitor the electric wheelchair in real-time, with regard to pressure prevention, help the slope of the seat to be arbitrarily controlled.

Until recently, the primary users of wheelchairs were people with lower body disabilities. However, the number of patients recovering from accidents or surgery, as well as the number of elderly people using wheelchairs, is constantly increasing. This study examined the design and manufacture of standing and gait assist wheelchairs that assist temporary gait disturbed patients to take rehabilitation training and elderly people to engage in walking exercise. A kinematic analysis was used to select a drive motor and design a four-bar linkage mechanism for lifting the backrest vertically. Using a multibody dynamic simulation, detailed design was performed taking into consideration the spatial motion and partial interference, and the necessary push force and stroke of the linear actuator were also calculated. To ensure structural safety, the von-Mises equivalent stresses of the upper and lower brackets of the linear actuator were verified through a finite element analysis. The manufactured wheelchair was shown to operate successfully as intended, using the developed controller for the drive motors and linear actuator.

As the ageing population grows around the world, the demand for electric wheelchairs, an important mobility assistance device for the disabled and elderly, is gradually increasing. Therefore, a number of studies related to intelligent wheelchairs are actively underway to improve safety and comfort for wheelchair users. However, previous collision avoidance studies for intelligent wheelchairs have concentrated on collision avoidance methods with the shortest distance and by only changing either velocity or heading angle, rather than considering the forces exerted on the user. If a collision avoidance algorithm that does not consider these forces is applied to an intelligent wheelchair, there is a possibility of an accident due to falling as wheelchair users are generally disabled and elderly people. In this paper, we propose a collision avoidance algorithm which minimizes the forces exerted on a wheelchair user by minimizing the variation of the wheelchair's velocity and heading angle when the sizes, positions, velocities, and heading angles of a wheelchair and a moving obstacle are known.

With the recent acceleration of an aging society, the use of wheelchairs is increasing, and wheelchair accidents are also increasing. However, despite this situation, the domestic wheelchair market is lacking in deveolpment of additional functions to prevent wheechair collisions and falls. Therefore, this paper aims to design and implement intelligent smart wheelchairs equipped with functions such as stair wheels and automatic illumination sensor headlights that allow wheelchairs to automatically avoid obstacles, notify interlocking applications when falls are detected. Accordingly, it is expected to increase the convenience of wheelchair users and prevent frequent wheelchair accidents.
This paper describes a motored wheelchair that is suitable for disabled persons. A distinguish feature of our wheelchair is that a closed link mechanism is introduced. This link module changes conventional motored wheelchairs to computer controlled ones. It means that using intelligent functions of the computer, conventional motored wheelchairs can be navigated like an intelligent robot. Three examples of intelligent navigation functions are demonstrated. The first one is a motored wheelchair controlled by the head movement of the operator. The second one is a motored wheelchair with the image processing. Last one is a motored wheelchair with the remote sensing function.
This paper describes a new cooperative strategy for two wheelchairs to climb a step. These two wheelchairrobots are connected with a simple linkage mechanism between the rear of one wheelchair and the front of another. Two wheelchair robots climb a step one after the other. In this research, We did not use a method by Which a robot lifts up and supports its weight using any special actuator but a method of handling the robot's moment of rotation by the force of the link which come from the assisting robot. This method is especially influenced by the height of the two robot's link positions. So we study this method from the viewpoint of changing the two-link positions....

As the number of people with gait disorders increases, the demand for using wheelchairs increases and the area of a ctivity for people with disabilities expands, thereby they increasing the demand for riding comfortability in various driving environments. Therefore, this study is to develop an entry-level active suspension system that apply to wheelchairs and to evaluate its usability. The suspension applied in this paper consists of a coil spring, a shock absorber, a control module to control the strength of the shock absorber, and a road surface condition monitoring system. A wheelchair occupant secures the riding comfort by adjusting the coil strength of the shock absorber in 12 steps according to various road conditions. Therefore, the mechanical properties were evaluated through the structural analysis of the suspension system, and the tendency toward the magnitude of the road surface vibration attenuated according to the rigidity of the suspension through the vibration test was attempted. In conclusion, as a result of structural analysis of the suspension system, stress in a range lower than the yield strength of the material was generated, and the vibration test showed the effect of attenuating the vibration generated from the road surface when the stiffness of the suspension was adjusted.

This study investigated the degree of inconvenience in existing ready-made clothes and clothing preferences through a survey of 197 wheelchair-bound males in order to provide preliminary data for the development of a suit that considers the physical characteristics and requirements of the disabled in wheelchairs for improved quality of living and positive interpersonal relations. Among the survey respondents, the 30s to 40s age group was the largest at 71.6%. The most common type of disability was myelopathy at 72.6%. Also 59.9% of respondents had a job and ongoing external and social activities. As for the duration of wheelchair use, 10-20 years was the longest at 40.6%. It was found from the survey that respondents felt inconvenienced with existing clothes and changing pants was most inconvenient. Most experienced having their clothes altered due to the difficulty in finding well-fitting ones; consequently, the length of pants was the most altered item because pants are based on the size of a standing man and there exists a discrepancy in length due to the atrophy of the legs of the disabled. They preferred one style in general for clothing preferences as well as common design and details as well. However, they preferred a style with a short front and long back due to a discomfort in jacket length. A short length was the most complained about pants item.
