  • The rolling-stocks used in conventional line have suffered wheel problems due to lack of adaptability with track. These brought out severe wheel wear and inefficiency of wheel maintenance. Especially, tight wheel maintenance criteria have caused waste factors of wheel machining, these increases rolling-stock maintenance costs. Thus, this study was started to Propose the wheel maintenance plans to improve maintenance efficiency in respect to wheel maintenance process in rolling-stock workshop.   • The surface of railway wheel tread in wheel-rail system can not be free from wear because of various circumstance such as railway condition, maintenance condition, weather condition, characteristics of wheel surface's geometrical shape, and vehicle suspension's structural characteristics etc. Therefore, the research on wear reduction and maintenance method are very important to ensure the safety of railway vehicle, to improve car comfort and to decrease maintenance cost. In this study, the wear rates of railway wheel have been periodically measured in terms of the running distance of Electrical Multiple Unit which have been currently operated and the microstructure transformation of wheel tread using replication method have been performed. The results show that the relations between the flange wear and tread microstructure are depended on running distance and it will supply basic data on wheel maintenance.

  • In this study, we have analyzed the optimum control of wheel for coach car in maintenance process to grasp the problem relating to this coach's wheel exchanged. So, these problems brought about decrement maintenance cost. This study were deliberated to solve problems concerning maintenance process of wheel exchanged and wheel specification in rolling stock workshops of KNR. Here, we describe some results.

Optimisation of Rolling Stock Wheelset Life through Better Understanding of Wheel Tyre Degradation

  • Since the 1990's the fleet of the Dutch Railways showed a dramatic decrease in wheel tyre life. This lifetime reduction led to an unacceptable increase in life cycle costs. Therefore Lloyd's Register Rail has proposed to NedTrain to investigate the possibilities of improving the wheel tyre life. Three improvements were determined as most promising and relatively easy to achieve: - Profile optimisation for Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) reduction - a new wheel profile has been developed with a better resistance against rolling contact fatigue of the wheel tread. The profile has been implemented on single deck intercity trains and shows an increase in wheel tyre life of 30%. - Selection of improved wheel tyre materials - combining information from literature and experiences of manufacturers five alternative wheel tyre materials have been selected and are now being tested in practice. - Optimisation of the maintenance strategy - an alternative, preventative maintenance regime has been developed. With this Scraping regime, during short term maintenance every wheel is reprofiled. Higher mileages are reached and savings on life cycle costs up to 50% and more have been achieved. Unplanned maintenance goes down with $30{\sim}60%$. The results from field tests, using a reference group for comparison, and preliminary results after implementation show that the increase in wheel tyre life that is achieved with this project is significant. The results will continue to be monitored using the asset management tool 'Wheel Watch', that was specially developed for this project and is also described in this paper.

  • Many kinds of rolling-stocks that have various control methods are being operated by Seoulmetro which is a history of a city railroad rolling-stock. Seoulmetro is being faced with a wheel management comparing of other lines with a perpendicular wear of wheel and a side damage, and so on, by operating several cars at a loop line. This is causing maintenance expenses increase and deteriorating a fusibility of rolling-stock, for it has an effect on a rolling-stock using. A cutting pattern of wheel and a wear form affect the expected span of a wheel. A wheel cutting cause is classifed into cutting for reprofiling of a flange wear of wheel and for removing every kind defect which originates from wheel wear. In this study, Seoulmetro exhibit a stable rolling-stock use method and a reasonable management method of wheel, analysing wheel exchange condition and cutting management of wheel.

ARS를 이용한 2바퀴 로봇의 자세 제어에 관한 연구 (A Study on Pose Control for 2 wheel Robot using ARS)

  • In this paper, configuration control for the Horizontal Maintenance of the 2 wheel robot has been studied using ARS(Attitude Refrence System). The 2 wheel robot technique is getting attention and there have been many researches on the seg-way since the US. Using its 2 freedom, a 2 wheel robot can move in various modes and Our robot performs goal reaching ARS.2 wheel robot fall down to the forward or reverse direction to converge to the stable point. Kalman Filter is normally used for the algorithm and numerous research is progressing at the moment. To calculate the attitude in ARS using 2 axis gyro(roll, pitch) and 3 axis accelerometers (x, y, z). In this paper we present a two wheel robot system for an autonomous mobile robot. This paper realized the robot control method which is much simpler but able to get desired performance by using the ARS control.

  • Train wheels are the most important part of the high-speed rail system with supporting body, running stably and safely. Wheel exchange and fix plan is computed by the worker who managing entire Train Maintenance Process based on his know-how so that this system is losing its reliability and accuracy. And predicting of the wheel's lifetime is absolutely difficult matter because of uncertainty between trains like mileage of the type of trains, condition of operation, curve section and wheel's cutting pattern. Therefore workers always used to hold many wheels. For this reason, the cost of stock is soar when the level of stock was normal. If the stock is sufficient, the cost of stock will rise. On the other hand, If the stock is deficient, we would have trouble that the plan of the train maintenance process will be failed. Thus this paper aimed at application that "Wheel Managing System" which is able to predict wheel's life-cycle and demands under the RIMS(Rolling-Stock Information Maintenance System) with analysing wheel exchanging and cutting status considering economical or stable aspects.

  • Radio frequency identification, or RFID, is a generic term for technologies that use radio wave to automatically identify people or objects. UHF RFID technology is used for everything from tracking goods within their supply chain, working in process and for other applications. If RFID is applied in wheel scanner that is a important equipment to measure a diameter, width, height of wheel, efficiency in maintenance will be improved because of checking data in real-time. In domestic technology, capacity of wheel scanner technology as well as RFID are less good than foreign goods there a up to current day a point of read range, anti-collision, a tolerance. Therefore, sturdy on the development of wheel scanner using RFID technology to measure wheel in maintenance of rolling stock was carried out in this paper.

  • Mechanical force acted on the rail wheel causes excessive wear and increases the maintenance cost. The present paper proposes newly designed wheel profiles in order to reduce the contact stress. Numerical analysis on the stress distribution of wheel-rail contact stress is carried out using ABAQUS, a commercial finite element code. The result of KNR1/40 conical wheel is compared to those of the proposed wheels, all of which are arc wheel profile type.

  • Railway wheel/rail contact conditions have an influence on dynamic behavior of rolling stock. If there are problems of incompatibility between wheel and rail, damages like wheel wear, wheel spalling, rail wear, etc are occurred. Especially wheel and rail profiles are important factor of vehicle curving performance, so compatibility study between wheel and rail has to be carried out preferentially, In this study, we have analyzed the compatibility between wheel and rail of KNR conventional line to improve the maintenance efficiency of wheel and rail. Thus we showed the results relating to wheel/rail geometric contact, vehicle running performances as the change of wheel/rail combination.
