Growth and Nutrient Utilization in Buffalo Calves Fed Ammoniated Wheat Straw Supplemented with Sodium Sulphate

  • Ten male buffalo calves (aged 6-8 months, average body wt. $88.5{\pm}0.5kg$) were divided into two groups of five animals in each. All the animals were fed on urea-ammoniated wheat straw (4% urea, 50% moisture) along with concentrate mixture (50:50 on DM basis). In addition animals in group II were given sodium sulphate to see the effect of sulphur on the utilization of nitrogen added through urea-ammoniation. This feeding practice continued for a period of 120 d, during which fortnightly body weights were taken to assess their growth rate. A metabolism trial was conducted after 90 days of feeding to know the digestibility of nutrients and their balance. Results revealed no significant difference in the intake of DM and other nutrients in two groups. The digestibility of DM, OM, EE, NDF, ADF and cellulose was alike in animals fed ammoniated straw and ammoniated straw+sodium sulphate supplemented group, whereas the digestibilities of CP and hemicellulose was significantly (p<0.01) more in group I and II respectively. There was no significant difference in intake of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus in 2 groups. Similarly, the balance of these 3 nutrients was positive and statistically alike in two groups. Intake and excretion of sulphur through faeces and urine was significantly (p<0.01) more in group II than in group I. Inspite of higher excretion of sulphur through faeces and urine in group II, the sulphur balance was significantly (p<0.05) more in group II than in group I, probably due to significantly (p<0.01) higher intake of sulphur in this group. There was no significant difference in total body weight gain or average daily gain between two groups, indicating that addition of sodium sulphate did not have any positive effect on these parameters. Similarly the intake of DM, DCP and TDN were also alike in two groups. The DCP and TDN values of the two diets were 8.0, 60.4 and 6.8, 56.6% respectively. Feeding cost/unit gain was alike in both the groups.

Feeding Acacia saligna to Sheep and Goats with or without the Addition of Urea or Polyethylene Glycol

  • The objective of the research was to investigate the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or urea supplementation in sheep and goats fed a basal diet of Acacia saligna and wheat straw. The 3 dietary treatments were: (1) Control: ad libitum A. saligna+ 400 g/d wheat straw (95% DM) (basal diet); (2) Basal diet+50 g/d PEG 4000; and (3) Basal diet+1% (on a DM basis) urea sprayed onto the straw and A. saligna 30 min prior to feeding. All animals maintained live weight, regardless of the dietary treatment. All sheep readily consumed the A. saligna in preference to straw. In sheep both DMD and OMD were higher (p<0.05) where PEG was included in the diet compared to the other two treatments. Contrary to findings by other researchers there was no significant difference in DMI, DMD or OMD between sheep and goats in corresponding treatment groups. All animals were in positive N balance. For both sheep and goats, rumen ammonia concentrations were increased with the use of either urea or PEG. In these groups the maximum ammonia concentrations exceeded 50 mg/L, considered the minimum required to maximise microbial growth. This threshold, however, was exceeded only for a period of 8-11 h. Of those measured, rumen ammonia levels were generally the highest at 4 h post feeding. None of the measurements of rumen ammonia for the control group approached 50 mg/L. It is unclear how and why feed intake and live weight were maintained when rumen ammonia levels were often sub-optimal.

  • 난지(暖地) 세립질(細粒質) 2모작(毛作) 논에서 유기물(有機物)(볏짚, 퇴비(堆肥), 밀짚) 장기연용시(長期連用時)(14.28년(年)) 토양이화학성의 실태와 지력질소(地力窒素) 발현양상 그리고 작물(作物)(수도(水稻), 옥수수)의 질소 흡수(吸收)와의 관계에 대해서 조사분석(調査分析)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 유기물연용(有機物連用)에 의(依)해 작토시(作土尸)이 깊어지고 용적밀도(容積密度)의 감소(減少), 공극률(孔隙率)의 증가, 고상률(固相率)의 저하(低下), 기상률(氣相率)의 증가가 인정(認定)되었음. 2. 유기물연용(有機物連用)에 의(依)해 전탄소(全炭素)의 년간(年間) 평균증가량은 1~14년간(年間) 볏짚연용시(連用時) 0.0371%, 퇴비(堆肥)는 0.0407%였으나 15~28년(年) 볏짚연용(連用)은 0.0007%, 퇴비(堆肥)는 0.014%였다. 그리고 전질소함량(全窒素含量)은 1~14년간(年間) 볏짚연용시(連用時) 0.0025%, 퇴비(堆肥)는 0.0038%였고, 15~28년간(年間) 볏짚연용(連用)은 0.0014%, 퇴비(堆肥)는 0.0024%가 증가하였음. 3. 유기물연용(有機物連用)에 의(依)해 암모니아 아미드태질소(態窒素)는 밀짚28년연용(年連用), 아미노당태질소(糖態窒素)는 퇴비(堆肥)28년연용(年連用) 그리고 아미노산태질소(酸態窒素)는 볏짚14, 28년연용(年連用), 미동정질소(未同定窒素)는 관행(慣行)에서 높았음. 4. 담수배양(湛水培養) 온도별(溫度別) 가급태질소(可給態窒素) 발현량은 $30^{\circ}C>25^{\circ}C$=포장매설온도(圃場埋設溫度)의 경향(傾向)을 보였으나 시약추출법(試藥抽出法)보다 발현양이 적었음. 5. 작물(作物)(수도(水稻), 옥수수)의 질소흡수량(窒素吸收量)은 담수배양법(湛水培養法)과 시약추출법중(試藥抽出法中)에서 M/15인산완충액(燐酸緩衝液)(pH7.0)으로 추출(抽出)한 가급태질소량(可給態窒素量)과의 상관관계가 높았음. 6. 백미(白米)의 수량(收量)은 관행(慣行)에 비(比)하여 볏짚28년연용(年連用)에서 17%, 퇴비(堆肥)28년연용(年連用)12%, 볏짚14년연용(連用) 11%, 밀짚28년연용(年連用) 7%가 증가되었음.

NUTRITIVE EVALUATION OF FOURWING SALTBUSH IN GROWTH AND DIGESTIBILITY TRIALS WITH HARNAI LAMBS IN UPLAND BALOCHISTAN

  • Twenty-four Harnai lambs 6 to 7 month old, weighing $16{\pm}2kg$ were used in a completely randomized design in growth and digestibility trials to study fourwing saltbush ratio supplemented with cotton seed cake. The animal were divided at random into three groups of 8 animals each. Three iso-nitrogenous (10.5% CP) experimental rations (1, 2 and 3) containing wheat straw + lucerne hay (24:76); fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) + cotton seed cake (71:29); and wheat straw + cottonseed cake (41:59); respectively, were allotted to each group randomly. All the animals were taken out for grazing in a dormant native range for about 3 hours in the afternoon during the growth trial. The growth trial lasted for 8 weeks followed by a digestibility trial. At the end of 8 weeks lambs on ration 3 had gained significantly (p<0.10) more weight compared to those on rations 1 and 2 which maintained their body weight. The crude protein digestibility of the fourwing saltbush based ration was comparable with the other two treatments (71 vs 70 and 71%). However, the digestibility of dry matter (41%), acid detergent fibre (13%) and neutral detergent fibre (22%) of this ration was significantly lower (p<0.10) than the other two diets. The results suggest that lambs can be maintained on fourwing saltbush during winter without significant loss in body weight with 30% extra protein concentrate supplementation.

Influence of Different Supplements on the Commercial Cultivation of Milky White Mushroom

  • Calocybe indica, known as milky white mushroom, grows and cultivated in the sub-tropical and temperate zones of South Asia. We investigated the most suitable supplements and their levels for the commercial cultivation of milky white mushroom. Rice bran, maize powder, and wheat bran with their different levels (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%) were used as supplements to evaluate the yield and yield contributing characteristics of C. indica. Primordia initiation was observed between 13.5 and 19.3 days. The results indicated that the 30% maize powder supplement was effective for producing viable fruiting bodies. The maximum diameters of the pileus and stalk were observed with 30% maize powder. The highest biological and economic yield and biological efficiency were also obtained with 30% maize powder as a supplement. The results indicate that increasing the supplement level resulted in less biological efficiency, and that 30% maize powder was the best supplement level for rice straw substrate to cultivate milky white mushrooms.

Utilization of Sunflower Crop Residues as Feed in Small Ruminants

  • Sheep and goats in Pakistan have not been able to produce to the best of their potential. This may primarily be attributed to under feeding and malnutrition. Ranges have been depleted due to overgrazing and mismanagement and are not in position to feed the existing small ruminant population. To overcome the shortage of good quality fodder and balanced feed supply, the alternate means like cereal straws and other crop residues are being commonly used. Sunflower crop residues like stalks and heads provide a good quality forage for livestock. These crop byproducts are rich in crude protein and lower in crude fibre. Their inclusion in the diet of small ruminants at 20, 30 and 40 percent levels in ration has shown significantly (p < 0.05) increased feed intake and weight gain. Daily feed intake was 1,130, 1,180 and 1,750 g for sunflower crop residue, soybean crop residue and wheat straw, respectively, when added at the rate of 20 percent in the ration. The drymatter digestibility of sunflower, soybean crop residues and wheat straw was also comparable. The maximum performance of the animals was observed at the 20 percent level of inclusion of sunflower crop residue in the diet.

  • Macrophomina phaseolina균(菌)을 이용(利用)하여 살균제 Triadimefon의 밀 품종 Kharchia와 Lal Bahadur에 있어서 수확후의 잔류량을 조사한 결과 살포식물의 밀짚에서는 Triadimefon이 검출되었으나 밀 종자에서는 검출되지 않았다. 잔류량 조사를 위해 개발된 박층(薄層) 크로마토그라피에 의하여도 동일한 결과를 얻었다. 기주체내에서 Triadimefon은 Triadimenol로 전환되었다.

  • 섬유소계 바이오매스는 전분질계 바이오매스에 비해 리그닌이 많아 전처리가 필수적으로 요구된다. 섬유소계 바이오매스를 전처리하기 위한 용매인 에탄올은 효소당화(enzymatic hydrolysis)에 저해가 되는 물질을 분별하기 쉬우며, 증류를 과정을 통해 쉽게 재사용이 가능하다. 침출식 전처리 공정은 반응기 내에서 연속적으로 성분을 분별하여 고-액 분리가 용이하며 향후 스케일업에서도 유리하다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 장점들을 활용하여 대표 섬유소계 바이오매스인 옥수수대(corn stover)로 전처리를 진행하였으며 해당 공정을 밀대(wheat straw)와 거대억새(miscanthus)에 적용하여 추가적인 바이오매스의 적용 가능성을 확인하였다.

  • 국내산 고간류의 영양학적 평가는 매우 중요하다. 본 연구는 압력센서를 이용하여 국내산 고간류의 가스발생량과 반추위발효산물과의 상관관계를 비교하고자 실시하였다. 가스발생량 측정장치는 압력센서, AD board, LED 모니터 및 real-time graphics가 설치된 컴퓨터로 구성되었다. 가스발생량과 건물소화율은 지수방정식 Pt = a + b ($1-e^{-ct}$)을 기초로 추정하였다.초기 가스발생량은 볏짚이 가장 높았으며 보리짚, 밀짚순이었다. 시간당 분해상수는 3.8, 2.5, 2.5%$h^{-1}$로서 볏짚, 보리짚, 밀짚순이었다. 전체 휘발성 지방산은 초기 12시간에 유의한 차이가 있었지만 배양 72시간 이후의 농도는 세 처리구에서 비슷한 결과를 나타냈다. 가스발생량과 건물소화율의 상관지수($r^2$)는 0.76-0.83으로 밀접한 관계가 있었으며 또한 휘발성지방산과 가스발생량의 상관지수는 0.91-0.98로 매우 밀접한 관계가 있었다. 따라서 가스발생량, 건물소화율 및 휘발성 지방산의 단일상관관계는 고간류의 in vivo 소화율에서도 유사할 것으로 보인다.

EFFECT OF SUPPLEMENTING UREA MOLASSES MINERAL BLOCK LICK TO STRAW BASED DIET ON DM INTAKE AND NUTRIENT UTILIZATION

  • Twelve male crossbred calves of 18 months of age were divided into two groups of six each. Animals in both the groups were fed wheat straw ad lib. However, animals in group II had free access to urea molasses mineral block (UMMB) lick. Straw DM intake (kg/100 kg B. Wt. and $g/w^{0.75}\;kg$) was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in group II ($1.95{\pm}0.06$; $75.55{\pm}1.79$) as compared to group I ($1.27{\pm}0.08$; $48.77{\pm}2.43$). Straw DM digestibility coefficient was not significantly different in groups I and II. However, DOMI (kg/100 kg B. Wt.) was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in group II ($0.986{\pm}0.05$) as compared to group I ($0.615{\pm}0.03$). Digestibility coefficient of DM, OM and CP were significantly higher in group II as compared to group I. However, digestibility coefficients of EE, CF and NFE were non-significantly different between the two groups. Animals in group II exhibited significantly (p < 0.01) higher and positive N, Ca and P balances as compared to group I which exhibited negative balances. Total-N, ammonia-N and urea-N in the blood plasma of animals in group II were significantly (p < 0.01) higher as compared to group I.
