In most African urban areas, Particulate Matters (PM) concentration exceeds by far the WHO limits. In these areas, plants can play a key role in removing particles. In this study, we evaluated three ornamental species (Jatropha interrigima, Ficus benjamina, Barleria prionitis) used in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Leaf-encapsulated saturation isothermal remnant magnetisation (SIRM) were measured and the relationship between PM captured and leaf wettability were done. The sampling were performed at roadsides and Parks. Firstly, Leaf-encapsulated and total leaf SIRM were quantified and the wettability was determined by drop contact angles (DCA). Secondly, the relationship between leaf SIRM and wettability was found. Results showed that leaf SIRM was two to ten times higher at roadsides than in Parks. Total leaf SIRM was also higher on mature leaves in Main roads suggesting a particle accumulation in leaves over time especially in waxy species (Ficus benjamina). This species encapsulated other than 20% of total leaf SIRM. All tested species were highly-wettable ($40^{\circ}$ < DCA < $90^{\circ}$). Thus, Jatropha interrigima with its leaf trichomes and F. benjamina with its leaf waxes were more wettable. A significantly positive correlation was found between wettability intensity and leaf SIRM.
Experiments were performed to find out the effects of simulated acid rain(SAR) of pH 4.0 or pH 2.5 for 12 weeks on stomatal resistance, wettability and anatomical changes in Quercus acutissima and Ginkgo biloba seedlings. As a control, distilled water with a pH 6.5 was also sprayed. Stomatal resistance of Q. acutissima and of G. biloba remarkably increased after exposure to SAR. SAR increased the wettability of Q. acutissima leaves measured with water blue solution and of G. biloba leaves measured by leaf contact angle method. Anatomical changes in the leaves of Q. acutissima affected by SAR were the partial damage of epidermis and parenchymatous cells. Scanning electron microscopical observation showed that the number of trichomes in the leaves of Q. acutissima treated with SAR markedly decreased and the erosion of epicuticular wax was significant. No distinct damage was found in the G. biloba leaves at pH 4.0, while epidermis and vascular tissue were collapsed at pH 2.5. No significant alteration of surface structures in this tree species was observed.

This study described the test results to evaluate the effect of fines content on the wettability of sandy soil composed of hydrophobic soil particles. Wettability was evaluated using the contact angle obtained from the water drop test results for Jumunjin standard sand and sandy soil containing fines content. The test results showed that the wettability of sandy soil composed of sand and fine-grained soil changed depending on the hydrophobic level and fines content. The influence of fines content on the wettability of sandy soil was analyzed. It was found that 1% and 3% hydrophobic sandy soil with 5% fines content decreased by 94.4% and 32.4%, respectively, compared to the contact angle of standard sand. In addition, the contact angle reduction ratio for sandy soil with a 5% hydrophobic level and a fines content of 5% and 10% were 24.4% and 37.3%, respectively. In other words, the wettability of the soils should be evaluated considering the fines content to predict the behavior of contaminants, because the fines content has a significant impact on the value and increase/decrease ratio of the contact angle of sandy soil
In this research, the effects of the concrete superplastizers on the wettability of cement particle and concrete strength were studied. The wettability of the cement particles strongly depended on the type of the superplastizer. When the superplastizer had a higher wettability with the cement particles, it revealed a good fluidity of the concrete mortar and a higher concrete strength. Non-ionic superplastizers (polycarboxylic type) had a relatively good performance on the mortar fluidity and concrete strength properties compared to anionic superplastizers (lignosulfate, sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde, sulfonated melamin formaldehyde). It was observed that the blending of the polycarboxylic and the lignosulfate type concrete superplastizers resulted in synergistic effects on the concrete mortar fluidity and concrete strength properties.

The exterior structures of natural organisms have continuously evolved by controlling wettability, such as the Namib Desert beetle, whose back has hydrophilic/hydrophobic contrast for water harvesting by mist condensation in dry desert environments, and some plant leaves that have hierarchical micro/nanostructures to collect or repel liquid water. In this work, we have provided a method for wettability contrast on metals by both nano-flake or needle patterns and tuning of the surface energy. Metals including steel alloys and aluminum were provided with hierarchical micro/nanostructures of metaloxides induced by fluorination and a subsequent catalytic reaction of fluorine ions on metal surfaces in water with various ranges from room to boiling temperature of water. Then, a hydrophobic material was deposited on the structured surfaces, rendering superhydrophobicity. Plasma oxidization induces the formation of superhydrophilic surfaces on selective regions surrounded by superhydrophobic surfaces. We show that wettability contrast surfaces align liquid water within patterned hydrophilic regions during the condensation process. Furthermore, this method could have a greater potential to align other liquids or living cells.

This paper introduces the partial melting process for solder application and characterization of its possibility using off-eutectic Pb-Sn alloy. In order to show that the liquid phase in the semi-liquid state maintains the wettability as the single-phase liquid, the wetting balance test are conducted with varying temperatures and compositions. The results are then compared with the surface tension of liquid, both measured and calculated, to examine the correlation. The results from this investigation indicate that the partial melting can yield satisfactory solder joints as long as the liquid phase acquires sufficient chemical activity. At a condition where the partial melting is effective, a direct correlation between the wettability and the surface tension is found to exist. All alloys are found to show a reasonable wettability in semi-liquid state.

In this paper, we have studied with regard to the use of lasers for modifying the surface properties of silicon in order to improve it's wettability and adhesion characteristics. Using an Nd:YAG pulse laser, the wettability and adhesion characteristics of silicon surface have been developed by an Nd:YAG pulse laser. It was found that the laser treatment of silicon surfaces modified the surface energy. In the result of wetting experiments, by the sessile drop technique using the distilled water, wetting characteristic of silicon after the laser irradiation shows a decreased value of the contact angle. In case of the laser treated silicon surface, laser direct writing of copper lines has been achieved by pyrolytic decomposition of copper formate films$(Cu(HCOO)_2{\cdot}4H_2Q)$, using a focused $Ar^+$ laser beam$(\lambda=514.5nm)$ on the silicon substrates. The deposited patterns were measured by energy dispersive X-ray(EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and surface profiler($\alpha$-step) to examine the cross section of deposited copper lines and linewidth.

The electrolyte wetting phenomena occurring in the electrode of lithium-ion battery was studied using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Recently, lithium-ion batteries are being mixed with small particles on the active material to increase the capacity and energy density during the electrode design stage. The change to the mixing ratio may influence the wettability of electrolyte. In this study, the changes in electrolyte distribution and saturation were investigated according to various mixing ratios of active material. We found that the variations in mixing ratio of active material affect the wetting mechanism, and result in changes to the wetting speed and wettability of electrolyte.
It is well known that the graphite flakes become spherulite, when a suitable amount of nodulizing element, such as cerium or magnesium, is added to the cast iron. The change of graphite from flake to nodular shape improves not only the tensile strength but the ductility as well. However, the mechanism of spheroidization of graphite in cast iron has not yet been clearly understood, and various theories proposed by a number of investigators were such that it may be due to the special nucleation effect, prevention of flake formation by the adsorption of magnesium vapour on the graphite surface or file surface free energy difference between plain graphite and magnesium-adsorbed graphite. Regardless of the speculations of spheroidizing mechanism of the graphite in the cast iron, the final phenomenon comes to the conclusion that it may be due to the lack of wettability between graphite and iron matrix. In order to collaborate this fact through an experimental method, the authors have constructed a vacuum arc furnace for the wettability measurement as its first step. Our study and experiments were then directed to the comparison of the wettability between iron and graphite on the two cases (namely, the one where magnesium was preliminarily coated on the graphite surface and the other not coated), by means of contact angle measurements. The result was such that a significant difference of the contact angles has been shown between the above two cases. indicating the spheroidization of graphite which might have resulted from the lack of wettability between magnesium-adsorbed graphite and iron matrix.
