  • This study aimed to provide fundamental data for enlargement strategy of Ramsar site through the analysis of designation properties about 22 sites which has been registered for 20 years since Yongneup (Mt. Daeam) was designated as the first Ramsar site in Korea. Designation properties were analyzed on the basis of Ramsar Information Sheet and ecological properties was mainly analyzed in relation to designation criteria. Designation of Ramsar wetland was concentrated before and after Changwon Congress in 2008 and in terms of area 11 sites are below $1km^2$ and 5 sites are above $10km^2$. The average number of applied designation criteria was 2.86 and Criterion 2 (threaten species), Criterion 1 (representativeness and rareness of wetland type) and Criterion 3 (biodiversity) are mainly applied. In terms of protection species, internationally recognized species were 18 species on IUCN redlist, 12 species on CITES and 13 species on CMS, and nationally recognized species were 76 species on endangered species designated by Ministry of Envirionment, 83 speceis on national redlist and 71 speceis on endemic species respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the basis information for ecological conservation and restoration of Jangdo wetland conservation area through the survey of vegetation diversity and spatial distribution characteristics. Syntaxonomic account of plant communities were carried out field survey by Z.-M. school method at 14 sites and relationship analysis between plant community and environment variables with Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA). Based on the floristic composition, all the plots were classified into xeric and hydric type and arranged in seven plant communities. Spatial distribution of plant communities is determined primarily by the soil moisture condition and amount of organic matter. Hydric vegetation is around 8% ($7,337m^2$) of the protected area and distributed swamp forest of dominating willows under 18 years. Proliferation of willows are recognised extended from edge to centre after in 1990's caused by fallow and control of livestock grazing on wetland. Jangdo wetland will have to readjust the protection boundary because wet meadow zone and swamp forest have been distributed outside the protection area.

  • The increase of rice productivity, the decrease of rice demand, aging farmers, and the market-opening of rice along with the domestic and international conditions changes have been led to the increase of the abandoned rice paddy fields. Such abandoned rice paddy fields have been left in many areas and most of them have become wetlands. The purpose of this study is methodology of selection to the wetland for development in the abandoned rice paddy fields along with surroundings. The selection of habitat suitability index assessment study to conservation and restoration was done through hydrology, wild animals habitation, wetland vegetation, outside disturbance, and natural purification capacity assessment. In addition, the same method was applied to assessment items and standards for both the restoration site selection and the type of restoration. Both assessment items and standards were applied to the sites, drawn on the maps, and overlayer for the comprehensive map, and then the wetland suitability index was applied to the suitable site. The development technique was applied to 10 sites near the Banwol Stream watershed in Gunpo, Gyeonggi province. The selection of conservation, restoration, and the optimal sites can lead to not only the biodiveristy increase in agricultural or semi natural areas but also to the establishment of ecological networks in national level.

  • This study attempted to characterize and compare wetland conflicts in Korea and United States, which caused serious social and environmental effects. First of all, such 3 different survey methods as open-ended questionnaires, Likert-type and ranking questionnaires were adopted for 5 selected study sites in Korea and 12 cases in the U.S. in order to understand and measure these effects. 53 subjects were contacted for open face-to-face interviews in the U.S. and 258 in Korea and overall 567 disputants were for other questionnaires. Analyses of survey results revealed that disputants involved in the wetland conflicts had developed different concept of conflict frames. The study also identified the reframing is the key for conflict resolution Based on these results, a idea of public mediator was suggested to resolve and mediate conflicts.

  • We suggested several implications by examining geochemical properties of sediments in Simjeok, Jangdo, and Hwaeomneup mountain wetlands which are natural preservation areas. Geochemical properties of wetland sediments show that all wetlands were included in the type of fens, but their distribution patterns were different from one another. We classified three sub-groups of sediments using the two step cluster analysis on the ratio of exchangeable cations. Wetland sediments can be grouped into Ca-dominated, Mg-dominated, and K-dominated types. Simjeok wetland have Ca-dominated sediments, while the sediments of Jangdo wetland indicate the Mg-dominated and Ca-dominated characteristics. Hwaeomneup wetland is composed of K-dominated sediment mainly. Different properties in the ratio are affected by various environmental factors such as geological, pedological, and vegetational settings. Because these geochemical properties will be affected by climate change and human impacts, these will be environmental indicator in mountain wetlands and be used in wetland management. This scheme can be used for classification of mountain wetlands. Therefore, we should work on geochemical properties of wetland sediments and classification schemes based on geochemical properties not only to widen understanding in geomorphic system or ecosystem of mountain wetlands but to conserve mountain wetlands properly.

  • Estuarine wetland, where freshwater meets saltwater, is a transitional ecosystem that is valuable ecologically for a variety of reasons, such as feeding and breeding sites for birds, fish, and wildlife. However, research on the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of estuarine wetlands in Korea is rare. As a fundamental basis for wetland conservation, this study quantified the wetlands in three major estuaries, and evaluated the temporal dynamics of the wetlands since the 1910s. In particular, this study classified the wetland types into mud flat, sand, and emergent-plant types, and estimated the change of each wetland type, using topographic maps produced in the 1910s, 1970s, and 2000s. The wetlands in both the Han and Youngsan River estuaries have declined since the 1910s, but the rate of wetland decline was relatively low before the 1970s, compared to that since the 1970s. The impact of human activities, such as the Youngsan Watershed Comprehensive Development Project and the construction of estuary barrages, has disrupted the estuary cycles and destroyed huge amounts of wetland in the Youngsan estuary. By contrast, estuarine wetlands have been preserved in the small Gahwa estuary, and provide a variety of habitats for plants and wildlife. A special management strategy for wetlands should be established as soon as possible.

  • Wetlands can transform or remove pollutants from water body, such as nitrogen, phosphate, and organics. Many researches were conducted in relation to uptake process by aquatic plants in wetlands. However, water purification processes in wetlands are the results of physical, chemical and biological, especially microbiological reactions. As such, understanding on microbial processes is of great importance. In this study, we used pondor marsh-type wetland microcosms for investigating the water purification capacity and microbial functions, namely, extracellular enzyme activities, nitrification and denitrification. In a pond system, removal efficiencies of $NO_3{^-}$ and $PO{_4}^{3-}$ were 96% and 100 % respectively, while those in a marsh system were 94%, 100% respectively. These high removal efficiencies appeared to be caused by high adsorption ability to soils and microbial functions in wetland.

  • Constructed wetlands have widely been employed to improve water quality, but only a few studies have assessed removal efficiencies of cations in pond-type and marsh-type wetlands comparatively. This study conveys removal efficiencies of cations in those types of wetlands. High removal efficiencies of $NH_4{^+}$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ were observed, which appeared to be related to plant uptake and soil absorption. In contrast, release of $Ca^{2+}$ was distinctive in pond-type wetland of which mechanism is yet to be revealed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the flora and vegetation in wetland of Mueuido. The forest vegetation was classified into 2 communities group (Utricularia bifida-Eriocaulon sikokianum and Alnus japonica) and 6 communities (Rhynchospora chinensis, Phragmites communis, Molinia japonica, Ischaemum crassipes, Quercus serrata and Pinus rigida-Miscanthus sinesis). Resources vascular plants were composed of 30 families, 53 genera, 50 species and 8 varieties, totaling 58 taxa. Among the investigated resources plants, Utricularia bifida and Utricularia racemosa were rare and endangered species. The special plants based on floral region by Ministry of Environment were 5 taxa; V rank species 2 taxa, II rank species 1 taxa and I rank species 2 taxa. A naturalized plants was 1 species of totaling 290 species appeared in South Korea. The Life-form were Hydatophytes (20.7%), Geophyte (19%), Microphanerophytes (19%), Hemicryptophytes (17.2%), Nanophanerophytes (17.2%), Chamaephytes (5.2%), Therophytes (1.7%). In marsh-type wetland of Mueuido, we predict that bog-type swamp, where various type of swamp plants are distributed, is starting to be formed based on the fact that Utricularia bifida and Utricularia racemosa, insectivorous plants, are dominant and sphagnum also is found. Along with the notion, there are reportedly found serious damages around wetland by human being and we have to prepare protection plans against it.

  • This study was carried out on 455 forest wetlands of south Korea for which an inventory was established through value evaluation and grade. Correlation analysis was conducted to find out the correlation between the types and grades of forest wetlands and 23 evaluation factors in four categories: vegetation and landscape, material circulation and hydraulics·hydrology, humanities and social landscape, and disturbance level. Through the improvement of types and grades of forest wetlands, it is possible to secure basic data that can be used in setting up conservation measures by preparing standards necessary for future forest wetland conservation and restoration, and to found a systematic monitoring system. First, between the type of forest wetland and size and accessibility showed a positive correlation, but the remaining items were analyzed to have negative or no correlation. In particular, it was found that there was no negative correlation or no correlation with the grades of forest wetland. Moreover, it was found that there was a very strong negative correlation with the weighted four category items. Thus, it is judged that improvement is necessary because there is an error in the weight or adjust the evaluation criteria of the value evaluation item, add an item that can increase objectivity. Especially, in the case of forest wetlands, the ecosystem service function due to biodiversity is the largest, so evaluation items should be improved in consideration of this. Therefore, it can be divided into five categories: uniqueness and rarity (15%), wildlife habitat (15%), vegetation and landscape (35%), material cycle·hydraulic hydrology (30%), and humanities and social landscape (5%). It will be possible to propose weights that can increase effectiveness.
