A Study on the Development of Fashion Accessary Product made with Korean Traditional Paper Hanji II - Focusing on analysis of the related references - (전통 한지를 활용한 패션 액세서리 상품 개발 II - 관련문헌 분석을 중심으로 -)

  • Korean traditional paper 'Hanji' made from the bark of the paper mulberry tree is a good handicraft material because of its high viscosity, durability, dyeability, toughness, flexibility, plasticity, and manipulability. Hanji has been used as a textile material such as cotton wool for protection and keeping us warm from cold weather. However, Hanji has many limitations, while other textile materials have many advantages of such as washability, being sunproof, and fast coloring. The purpose of this study is to review physical properties, formation ability, and dyeability of Hanji as a material of fashion accessary. The contents of this study are composed of 5 parts: 1. To introduce the necessities of this study, 2. To review a historical background of Hanji and to identify its physical characteristics as a fashion accessary material, 3. To review and to compare techniques such as bonding, quilting, knitting, creasing and holding, twisting, folding & braiding, paper pasting, coloring & cutting, and outwashing(?) in making Hanji fashion accessaries, 4. To review dyeing and finishing techniques to increase commercial value, 5. To identify the best fashion accessary materials made of Hanji. The most important characteristics of Hanji as a fashion accessary material are its toughness in a wet state, fast color fixing, and flexibility. Especially weaving and knitting are considered as the most desirable techniques to make fashion accessary products stronger and more practical.

Seed Germination, Seedling Growth, and Herbicidal Responses of Bidens tripartita L. (가막사리 (Bidens tripartita L.)의 종자발아, 유묘의 생장 및 제초제반응)

  • This study was conducted to investigate seed germination, seedling growth, and responses to herbicides of Bidens tripartita L. When the field-collected seeds were stored under a dry-room temperature, dry-low temperature, wet-low temperature, or dry-high temperature condition, no seeds were germinated in a growth chamber with 14 hr photoperiod up to 35 days after the storage. Exceptionally, however, some seeds stored under a wet-room temperature condition were germinated after 25 days of the storage. This might be due to the fact that the seed coats were damaged by fungi which developed during the storage. Seeds stored under a wet-low temperature condition (stratification) began to be germinated after 3 months of the storage and the germination rate increased with a prolonged stratification. Almost all seeds were germinated after 9 months of the stratification. These results suggest that the dormancy of B. tripartita L. seeds relate to the seed coat and thus several attempts were made to induce seed germination through damaging or weakening the seed coat. Freezing($-20^{\circ}C$), drying($100^{\circ}C$), or swelling($40^{\circ}C$) of the seeds was not effective to induce the germination. Treatments of concentrated sulfuric acid, $KNO_3$, or gibberellin to the seeds had no effect on inducing the germination. However, ethrel had a stimulatory effect on the germination of the seeds with an optimum concentration of 250ppm. A seed cutting was also effective to induce the germination, but seedlings from the seeds had cutted cotyledons. Germination of the stratified seeds varied with the temperature condition to which they were subjected, but not with light. The germination rate was the highest at 35 - $40^{\circ}C$. Although the seeds were not able to germinate under a submerged condition, seedlings after 2-leaf-stage exhibited better growth under a submerged or a subirrigated condition than under an upland condition. Among the herbicides tested, pyrazosulfuton-ethyl, linuron, and bentazone were found to be effective for controlling B. tripartita L., having more herbicidal effect with an earlier application.

  • 1. Object and importance of the research. The exports of plywood are increasing annually and it has ranked first in the world market because of the high quality product developed and manufactured using modern techniques. However, it is known that the exports of the other wood products, except plywood, is inactive because of their low quality. Accordingly, to increase the exports of various wood products investigations were carried out on kiln drying techniques to improve the quality of the wood. 2. The details and scope of the research Wet wood should be kiln dried before use to prevent various drying defects such as distortion, shrinkage etc, which would develop after processing, and also wet wood is not suitable for cutting, gluing and finishing. Therefore, the kiln drying properties of lumber from such species as Persimmon, Oak, Ramin and Meranti which are used in large quantity for manufacturing exporting wood products have been studied. Also the real state of kiln drying industry in Korea was investigated. 3. Results and proposal for practical use of the research 3. 1 Results of the research 3.1.1 The end checks and the time for drying from intial moisture content of about 40 percent to 5 percent moisture content in ovendry were investigated as Table 1. 3.1.2 The kiln dried results, for 30mm stock, which are presented by using kiln schedule Table 2 are as Table 3. 3.1.3 The kiln schedule for Persimmon which has a normal drying properties is given in Table 4. However, the persimmon which has easy checking properties should be air dried under a relative humidity of above 85% until reaching about 25 percent moisture content. 3.1.4 The kiln schedules for ramin, meranti and oak are given respectively as follows.   • Experiment were conducted to find out the effective drying method of citrus peel produced in Korea by varying the temperature of hot air, surface area of peels, peels from several citrus varieties and physicochemical treatment of the peel. 1. About $3{\sim}6\;days$ were required to reduce the moisture level of the peel from 70%(wet basis) to 20% at room temperature without forced convection. 2. Drying was speeded up until the temperature of hot air reached $60^{\circ}C$. Beyond that no significant increase in drying rate was observed. About 50 minutes were needed to reduce the moisture level (dry basis) to below 10% at $60^{\circ}C$ by forced convection 3. When the peel surface area was increased twice by cutting the peel into 256 fractions, the overall drying time (the time required to reduce the moisture level to 10%, dry basis) was shortened to 15 minutes from 50 mintes of the original peel. 4. No significant difference in drying rate was observed among the peels from several citrus varieties except Shaddock jabon and Citrus ponki tanaka, which dried more slowly than others. 5. Treatment of $Ca(OH)_2$ and the pressing of the peel before drying were effective in drying only when the initial moisture content was substantially higher.

Studies on the Sprouting Characteristics of Scirpus planiculmis and Storage Methods of Corm for the Herbicide Screening (새섬매자기(Scirpus planiculmis)의 출아특성(出芽特性)과 제초제(除草劑) 스크리닝을 위한 구경(球莖)의 보관방법(保管方法))

  • The sprouting characteristics of Scirpus planiculmis and storage methods of corm for the herbicide screening were investigated under both laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Sprouting and elongation of S. planiculmis corms were continued during storage at low temperature ($5^{\circ}C$) and wet condition. However, sprouting of corm was failed when the surface water was removed from the corm, and elongation was reduced by the treatment of 0.5-1.0% sodium chloride(NaCl) solution. Alternate temperature was more effective on the sprouting of S. planiculmis corm than constant temperature. Optimum temperature for the sprouting of S. planiculmis corm was alternation between $25^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$. Storage at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. or 14.7% dehydration made the corm of S. planiculmis to fail for sprouting. S. planiculmis corm was more tolerant to sodium chloride than Echinochloa crus-galli or Oryza sativa(Donginbyeo) seeds. Sprouting rate was decreased by cutting of the corm. Sprouting percent by vertical cuttings, horizontal cuttings, and vertical plus horizontal cuttings were 72, 56, and 28%, respectively.

Carbohydrate and lipid spectroscopic molecular structures of different alfalfa hay and their relationship with nutrient availability in ruminants

  • Objective: This study was conducted to determine molecular structures related to carbohydrates and lipid in alfalfa hay cut at early bud, late bud and early flower and in the afternoon and next morning using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT/IR) and to determine their relationship with alfalfa hay nutrient profile and availability in ruminants. Methods: Chemical composition analysis, carbohydrate fractionation, in situ ruminal degradability, and DVE/OEB model were used to measure nutrient profile and availability of alfalfa hay. Univariate analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis (CLA) and principal components analysis (PCA) were conducted to identify FT/IR spectra differences. Results: The FT/IR non-structural carbohydrate (NSCHO) to total carbohydrates and NSCHO to structural carbohydrate ratios decreased (p<0.05), while lignin to NSCHO and lipid CH3 symmetric to CH2 symmetric ratios increased with advancing maturity (p<0.05). The FT/IR spectra related to structural carbohydrates, lignin and lipids were distinguished for alfalfa hay at three maturities by PCA and CLA, while FT/IR molecular structures related to carbohydrates and lipids were similar between alfalfa hay cut in the morning and afternoon when analyzed by PCA and CLA analysis. Positive correlations were found for FT/IR NSCHO to total carbohydrate and NSCHO to structural carbohydrate ratios with non-fiber carbohydrate (by wet chemistry), ruminal fast and intermediately degradable carbohydrate fractions and total ruminal degradability of carbohydrates and predicted intestinal nutrient availability in dairy cows ($r{\geq}0.60$; p<0.05) whereas FT/IR lignin to NSCHO and CH3 to CH2 symmetric stretching ratio had negative correlation with predicted ruminal and intestinal nutrient availability of alfalfa hay in dairy cows ($r{\geq}-0.60$; p<0.05). Conclusion: FT/IR carbohydrate and lipid molecular structures in alfalfa hay changed with advancing maturity from early bud to early flower, but not during the day, and these molecular structures correlated with predicted nutrient supply of alfalfa hay in ruminants.

Effect of Some Additives for Yukwa (Popped Rice Snack) Quality Improvement and Process Modification Trials (유과 품질향상을 위한 첨가물의 효과와 공정 단순화 시도)

  • Some additives were applied to improve Yukwa(Popped rice snack) quality and process modifications were tested for cutting down soaking time and application of rice flour. Addition of soaked soybean (3%, w/w) to dough showed higher expansion rate and better physical properties with more acceptable quality by sensory evaluation of Yukwa. Baking powder, modified starch and alcoholic liquor, Mackeali(rice wine, turbid). Soju(distilled liquor) and Yakju(rice wine, clear), were no positive effect on quality of Yukwa but alcoholic liquor gave more fine texture than others. High temprature soaking $(60^{\circ}C)$ of rice for 3 hours which is near gelatinization temperature of rice starch. gave same quality of Yukwa comparing with long time soaking (12 hours) at room temperature. Extention of high temperature soaking (12 hours) did not improve the quality of Yukwa. The 100 mesh of rice flour by dry milling method was better in expansion rate and hardness than 40 and 80mesh but it was worse than ordinary wet milling. It was notified that milling method and milling mechines for Yukwa preparation should be studied in more detail.

  • APT (Ammonium paratungstate) is widely used in various industries such as metal cutting tools, drill bits, mining tools, and military inorganic materials. In order to produce high purity APT(S), an impurity purification step in an aqueous $Na_2WO_4$ convert $H_2WO_4$ solution is required. It is difficult to remove impurity Na of 200 ppm or less when $H_2WO_4(S)$ is prepared by adding HCl(Aq) to an aqueous solution of $Na_2WO_4$, which is a well-known conventional wet method. However, in this study, a more economical and efficient method of removing Na through electrodialysis using a cationic membrane was studied. A large amount of Na in aqueous solution of $H_2WO_4$ due to $Na_2CO_3(S)$ which was added to dissolve waste tungsten carbide drill and scrap was removed to 20ppm or less through electrodialysis process, and it was confirmed that the effect of Na removal was great when using electrodialysis.

Formation processes of low river terraces in Korea (우리나라 저위하안단구(低位河岸段丘)의 형성요인)

  • According to the change of stream power/resisting power relationship due to the crustal movement or the climatic change, most channel landforms which reflect the equilibrium state of fluvial system are eroded and a part of them is remained as a river terrace. In many rivers in Korea are extensively distributed the relatively younger low river terraces. But their accurate formation mechanism is not known. In this paper, the formation processes and the dating of low river terraces distributed in Nakdong River basin will be investigated. Stream power of the downward erosion was revived because the sea level fell down. So stream power was superior to the resisting power under the cool-wet climatic condition during the last glacial period. Thus the river bed was excavated deeply, so that low river terraces were built up. And many incised meander loops were cut during this period. But, when fluvial system did not have equilibrium over all reaches, the last glacial period ended and the sea level initiated to rise rapidly. The headward erosion from the fall of sea level during the last glacial period had kept up to Hagye Fall because of the cutting of incised meander loops. Deeply excavated valleys and abandoned channel of cut-meander in lower reaches of a stream were filled with sediments. Thus the longitudinal profile of the uppermost reaches reflect the last interglacial, the upper reaches the last glacial, and the middle/1ower reaches recent fluvial system. Therefore low river terraces have been formed since the last glacial period.

Effect of Application Time and Rate of Diquat on Preharvest Field Drying of Rice (작물건조제 Diquat의 벼 수확전처리 건조효과 및 이용성)

  • Most of the currently available rice threshers in Korea are of head-feeding type originally developed for threshing paddy at grain moisture content of 15 to 17% on wet basis. And prevailing rice harvesting system is swathing or cutting and bundling upright rice crop at a maturity stage of grain moisture content of ca. 28 to 20%, followed by transient natural drying in the field and threshing at grain moisture content of about 17%. The system often allows rather high field loss of rice both quantitatively and qualitatively. These necessitate use of a preharvest desiccant, and diquat has been registered recently as a rice desiccant. Aim of the present study is to determine the best time and rate of diquat application and to evaluate its utility as a rice desiccant under its optimal usage conditions in Korea. Diquat was not so effective for japonica rice varieties while it was very effective for the new varieties bred from indica x japonica crosses. The best time of application was the period from 2 days before to 3 days after physiological maturity of grain (moisture content of 28% w.b.) and the optimal rate was about 330g of diquat ion/ha. Applying diquat at the right time and rate dropped grain moisture to 15 to 16% (w.b.) within a week after treatment in contrast to that of 20 to 24% in untreated rice. Desiccation of rice crop with diquat resulted in 10 to 15% increase in grain resistance to shattering and significant reduction in percent green rice. However, there was no reduction in milled rice yield and percent whole kernel and was no change in the percent chalky rice and percent tinted rice. Diquat use appears highly desirable, if there is no residue problem which has not been studied in the present study.
