The conditions of measurement for the determination of bulk density were evaluated to assess the bulkiness of 8 kinds of forage. The bulkiness of the forages was determined with 4 different sizes of forage samples with 7 different pressure application under air-dry and wet conditions. The dry bulk density (DBD) curvilinearly regressed with the pressure applied. The particle size of the samples and kinds of forage used in the present study did not affect changes in values of DBD determined under pressures over $20g/cm^2$ up to $200g/cm^2$. The values of the wet bulk density (WBD) increased as an increment of particle size, but were not always regressed on the particle size of the 8 kinds of forage. The DBD determined on 8 mm particles showed a higher correlation coefficient with neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents. The DBD may be a useful tool for the assessment of NDF in forage, when it is determined under condition of a pressure of $100g/cm^2$ or over with a particle size of 8 mm. The WBD may not be utilized for the direct measurement of the physical characteristics of forage, but may be required a thorough consideration on water solubility of forages. Further studies are needed to clarify the DBD contribution to the prediction of forage intake by ruminants.
MultiSensor Core Logger (MSCL) is a useful system for logging the physical properties (compressional wave velocity, wet bulk density, fractional porosity, magnetic susceptibility and/or natural gamma radiation) of marine sediments through scanning of whole cores in a nondestructive fashion. But MSCL has a number of problems that can lead to spurious results depending on the various factors such as core slumping, gas expansion, mechanical stretching, and the thickness variation of core liner and sediment. For the verification of MSCL data, compressional wave velocity, wet bulk density, and porosity were measured on discrete samples by Hamilton Frame and Gravimetric method, respectively. Acoustic impedance was also calculated. Physical property data (velocity, wet bulk density, and impedance) logged by MSCL were slightly larger than those of discrete sample, and porosity is reverse. Average difference between MSCL and discrete sample at both sites is relatively small such as 2224 m/s in velocity, $0.02-0.08\;g/\textrm{cm}^3$ in wet bulk density, and 2.52.7% in porosity. The values also show systematic variation with sediment depth. A variety of factors are probably responsible for the differences including instrument error, various measurement method, sediment disturbance, and accuracy of calibration. Therefore, MSCL can be effectively used to collect physical property data with high resolution and quality, if the calibration is accurately completed.

Sediment physical properties (compressional wave velocity, grain density, dry bulk density, and wet bulk density) are correlated to the paleoenvironmental parameters (coarse fraction, oxygen isotope, and planktonic foraminifera fragmentation) to reveal the possible interrelationship in the latest Quaternary sediments of the Ulleung Basin, the East Sea of Korea. Laboratory determinations of physical properties and paleoenvironmental parameters have been conducted on four piston core sediments. There are slight differences in the physical properties between glacial and interglacial period sediment sections. This is due to the large fraction of coarse grains of volcanic and terrigenous sediments relative to carbonate sediments. However, dry bulk density as an indicator of carbonate abundance in pelagic environment shows higher values at the lower part of cores, reflecting deeper CCD in the glacial period. Changes in velocity also relatively parallel to those in sediment coarse fraction, number of planktonic foraminifera, and wet bulk density. Therefore, we suggest that high-resolution physical properties may be used as a valuable tool for paleoenvironmental interpretation in the Ulleung Basin.
LCR meter를 이용하여 high frequency C-V를 측정한 후 North Carolina State University California Virtual Campus (NCSU CVC) 프로그램을 이용하여 Flatband Voltage를 구한 후에 Conductance Method를 측정하여 Dit를 측정하였다.
To reduce shrinkage and the possibility of fracture during ambient pressure drying, it is of great importance to increase the strength and stiffness of the wet gels. In this paper is presented the strengthening and stiffening of wet silica gels prepared from sodium silicate (water glass) as well as properties of the corresponding xerogels. By washing gels containing different initial silica contents in water solutions at elevated pH, a maximum in shear modulus of ~4 MPa was obtained. The maximum stiffness enabled xerogels with bulk density of 0.28g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ to be made regardless of silica content and washing conditions. However, by aging the wet gels in a solution providing fresh monomers to the gel network, a shear modulus of 20 MPa was obtained after 27h. By this method monolithic xerogels with a density down to ~0.2g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ was prepared. The results are compared to alkoxide based gels.
Compressional wave velocity (Vp), shear wave velocity (Vs), elastic and physical properties, and electrical resistivity for two core sediments obtained from Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) were measured and computed. The sediments consist of homogeneous mud (mostly silt and clay) with shells and shell fragments. As a result, the mean grain size is uniform ($7.5-8.5{\Phi}$ throughout the core sediments. However, physical properties such as wet bulk density and porosity show slightly increasing and decreasing patterns with depth, compared to the mean grain size. The compressional (about 1475 m/s in average) and shear wave (about 60 m/s in average) velocities with depth accurately reflect the pattern of wet bulk density and porosity. Electrical resistivity is more closely correlated with compressional wave velocity than physical properties. The computed Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratios are relatively higher (more than 10) and lower (approximately 0.002) than Hamilton's (1979) data, respectively, suggesting the typical characteristics of soft and fully water-saturated marine sediments. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio in soft and unconsolidated sediments is not likely sufficient to examine lithology and sediment properties. Relationships between the elastic constant and physical properties are correlated well. The elastic constants (Poisson's ratio, bulk modulus, shear modulus) given in this paper can be used to characterize soft marine sediments saturated with seawater.
In this study, various types of Jumchi Hanji were made to develop shroud materials as a new use for Hanji. The properties of Hanji (basis weight, thickness, apparent density, bulk, tensile strength, wet tensile strength, elongation ratio, tear strength, bursting strength, and folding endurance) are measured. In all cases, Jumchi Hanji had a higher thickness, lower apparent density and higher bulk than Hanji because pores in the intervals of mulberry fiber are composed of bulk. So, it is considered to carry a value as a textile material. As for the results of the strength analysis of Jumchi Hanji, Jumchi technique enhances 25% of elongation ratio, which is regarded the most important role in textiles and 35% of bulk. Moreover, it was shown that it enhanced overall strength. In conclusion, it implies the possibility of applying it as a shroud material. Jumchi Hanji is thought to have enough potential to be developed as a material to carry the characteristics of Hanji in the textile market.
