Welding technology plays an important role in the fabrication of structure, and this has led to an increasing attention in the use of high quality advanced welding technology such as power beam welding, friction stir welding, and laser-arc hybrid welding, etc. At the same time, welding can influence various factors in the performance of plant and equipment, and corrosion behaviour of weldment has been one of the major issues for both welding and corrosion research engineers. The aim of this paper is to give a short survey of the recent technical trends of welding and corrosion behaviours including the electrochemical corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and corrosion fatigue in connection with the welding materials, welding process, and welding fabrication.
As the size of containership increased over 14,000TEU, thick steel plate with high strength has been used. The plate thickness increased over 70mm and yield strength of the steel plate was around $47kg_f/mm^2$. Many researchers reported that the thick welded plate has low crack arrest toughness. They noticed the crack arrest ability is dependent on the plate thickness. In other words, brittle crack propagates straightly along the welded line and make abrupt fracture in the thick plate which causes low $K_{ca}$. In this study, the other factors, especially welding heat input, to cause low crack arrest toughness was investigated for thick steel plate welds. EH grade steel plates were used in this study and 50 to 80 thick plates were tested to confirm thickness sensitivity. Electro gas welding (EGW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) were adopted to prepare the welded joints. Temperature gradient ESSO test was performed to measure $K_{ca}$ values with the variation of welding variables. As a result of this study, regardless of plate thickness, welding heat input to cause welding residual stress around crack path is a key factor to control the brittle crack propagation in welded joints.

Generally, porosity which was formed by pyrolysis of the primer is usually generated in the weld metal in respect of increase of the welding speed. in order to analyze the cause of porosity generation, this study was performed using FCAW(flux cored arc welding) process for three kinds of inorganic.zinc primer. in addition the evaluation by influence of welding method on porosity generation is conducted to compare between FCAW and MAG(metal active gas) welding with the same inorganic zinc primer. As the result of this investigation, not only primer of lower organic binder and zinc but also FCAW process than MAG in fillet welding have been verified the excellent resistance to the porosity generation for horizontal fillet welding.
Gas nitriding is a surface hardening process where nitrogen is introduced into the surface of a ferrous alloy. During fusion welding of nitrided carbon steel, the nitride inside weld metal is dissolved and generates nitrogen gas, which causes porosities - blow holes and pits. In this study, several laser welding processes such as weaving welding, two-pass welding, dual beam welding and laser-arc hybrid welding were investigated to elongate the weld pool to enhance nitrogen gas evacuation. The surface pits were successfully eliminated with elongated weld pool. However blowholes inside the weld metal were effective reduced but not fully disappeared.
Various welding processes are now available for end cap closure of nuclear fuel element such as TG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, magnetic resistance welding and laser welding. Even though the resistance and TIG welding processes are widely used for manufacturing commercial fuel elements, they can not be recommended for the remote seal welding of a fuel element at a hot cell facility due to the complexity of electrode alignment, difficulity in the replacement of parts in the remote manner and a large heat input for a thin sheath. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser system using optical fiber transmission was selected for Zircaloy-4 end cap welding inside hot cell. The laser welding apparatus was developed using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser of 500 watt average power with optical fiber transmission. The weldability of laser welding was satisfactory with respect to the microstructures and mechanical properties comparing with TIG and resistance welding. The optimum operation processes of laser welding and the optical fiber transmission system for hot cell operation in a remote manner have been developed The effects of irradiation on the properties of the laser apparatus were also being studied.
On this research, laser welding technology for manufacturing automobile body is studied. Laser welding technology is one of the important technologies used in the manufacturing of lighter, safer automotive bodies at a high level of productivity; the leading automotive manufacturers have replaced spot welding with laser welding in the process of car body assembly. Korean auto manufacturers are developing and applying the laser welding technology using a high output power Nd:YAG laser and a 6-axes industrial robot. On the other hand, the robot-based remote laser welding system was equipped with a long focal laser scanner system in robotic end effect. Laser system, robot system, and scanner system are used for realizing the high speed laser welding system. The remote laser welding system and industrial robotic system are used to consist of robot-based remote laser welding system. The robot-based remote laser welding system is flexible and able to improve laser welding speed compared with traditional welding as spot welding and laser welding. The robot-based remote laser systems used in this study were Trumpf's 4kW Nd:YAG laser (HL4006D) and IPG's 1.6kW Fiber laser (YLR-1600), while the robot systems were of ABB's IRB6400R (payload:120kg) and Hyundai Heavy Industry's HX130-02 (payload:130kg). In addition, a study of quality evaluation and monitoring technology for the remote laser welding was conducted. The welding joints of steel plate and steel plate coated with zinc were butt and lapped joints. The quality testing of the laser welding was conducted by observing the shape of the beads on the plate and the cross-section of the welded parts, analyzing the results of mechanical tension test, and monitoring the plasma intensity and temperature by using UV and IR detectors. Over the past years, Trumf's 4kW Nd:YAG laser and ABB's IRB6400R robot system was used. Nowadays, the new laser source, robot and laser scanner system are used to increase the processing speed and to improve the efficiency of processes. This paper proposes the robot-based remote laser welding system as a means of resolving the limited welding speed and accuracy of conventional laser welding systems.

To evaluate the applicability of dissimilar joining between Mg and Al alloys in automobile manufacturing process, solid state joining processes such as magnetic pulse welding(MPW), friction stir welding(FSW) and friction spot joining(FSJ) were attempted successfully. MPW process has been concentrated mainly on round section tube to tube and tube to bar welds. AZ31 Mg alloy has been successfully welded to pure Al A1070 as well as to Al alloy A3003. While, for friction stir welding of dissimilar sheet joints, AZ31B/A6061 with the thickness of 2mm were used and a square butt joint with a good quality was obtained at the conditions of 0.8mm/sec of travel speed and tool rotation speed of 850rpm. The maximum tensile strength of 179 MPa, which was about 80 % of the Mg base metal tensile strength, has been obtained. Finally, friction spot joining was attempted to make a dissimilar lap joint between AZ31(0.8mm) and A6061(1mm), while the joint exhibited the same level of tensile shear strength as that of similar Mg joint.
The aim of present study is to investigate the effect of welding parameters and heat treatment conditions on the formability of the $CO_2$ laser welded silicon steel sheet. It was found that there is optimum range of the heat input ($0.6{\sim}0.7kJ/cm$) and gap distance ($0.125{\sim}0.150mm$) for the high tensile strength and the avoidance of the fracture in weld metal. Also, it was essential fur the improvement of formability to perform pre- and post-welding heat treatment which cause the uniform mixture of base metal and welding consumable.
