SCMH2 steel is widely used in the industrial members of car and tractor. This study focused on material properties and evaluation technology of the SCMH2 steel regarding the surface treatment followed by carburizing and nitriding, by means of impact test, hardness test. and fatigue test including HCF (high cycle fatigue) and VHCF (very high cycle fatigue). Drop weight impact tester (Instron, 9250 Hv) and Cantilever type rotating-bending fatigue tester (YRB200, 3150 rpm) were used to characterize the SCMH2 standard specimen before and after carburizing/nitriding. In order to understand those effects on fatigue characteristics and material properties, the fractured surfaces were carefully observed and analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscope) and EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy).
Ship Blocks are assembled by welding, and among them, welding between large blocks (Pre-erection stage) is used as feature of butt. In this process, local material has a experience of thermal cycle and become finally shrunk. As for inconsistency of shrunk weldments and adjacent regions, ship structure would be deformed locally and globally. Thermal distortion analyses are done for control of these processes, and methodologies capable of ship block size among them are using 2-D shell element in FEM. A shell element takes charge of plate, so it has its thickness which is important for angular distortion by welding. By the way, a butt-welding consists normally of several passes, and weldment thickness are different at each pass. If a calculated final one-time welding shrinkage is acting on the shell element whose thickness is same as it of plate, then deformation value must be underestimated. This research developed a methodology that total deformation after multi-pass welding can be analyzed by one time at shell element having original thickness of its plate. We use the SDB thermal distortion analysis method and verified by several experiment. The both experimental and analysis results showed good agreements.
The low frequency pulsed MIG welding process of new current waveform control to switch over unit pulse conditions (pulse current, pulse duration) in the fixed cycle was developed and its effect were investigated for aluminium and its alloy. By using this new welding process, the bead appearance having clear ripple pattern, such as TIG welding bead can be obtained and the gap tolerance of lap and butt welding joint can be expanded.
A literature review was conducted to gather informations available on the welding metallurgy of aluminum alloys, emphasized on characteristics in the heat affected zone(HAZ). Nominal metallurgical reactions that occur in aluminum alloys provide a basis for understanding aluminum welding metallurgy. However, welding reactions differ to some extent because of the relatively short times involved, and the non-isothermal heating excursed. For non-heat treatable alloys, welding primarily affects these alloys by annealing (recrystallization and growth) and to a less extent, changes in low temperature precipitates. In the case of heat treatable alloys, the resulting HAZ properties depend upon alloy composition, starting temper, heat input and post weld heat treatments.

Two High Tensile Strength Steel (EH47) plates with thickness of 70 mm were butt-welded together by multi-pass Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), also the hardness and welding residual stress were investigated experimentally. Based on Thermal-Elastic-Plastic Finite Element (TEP FE) computation, the thermal cycles during entire welding process were obtained, and the HAZ hardness of multi-pass butt welded joint was computed by the hardenability algorithm with considering microstructure evolution. Good agreement of HAZ hardness between the measurement and computational result is observed. The evolution of each phase was drawn to clarify the influence mechanism of thermal cycle on HAZ hardness. Welding residual stress was predicted with considering mechanical response, which was dominantly determined by last cap welds through analyzing its formation process.
The purpose of this paper is to propose a systematic method on the weld pitch design of a vehicle sub-frame considering the fatigue life of spot welding points. The input data, which perform the fatigue analysis on the spot welding nuggets, are obtained by both the dynamic analysis of the multi-body vehicle model passing through the virtual proving ground of a typical Belgian road and the quasi-static analysis with the finite element model of the vehicle sub-frame. By utilizing the life cycle data obtained from the fatigue analysis, the welding points to perform the pitch change are determined. The sensitivity analysis on the fatigue life of the welding points is carried out by using the three-level orthogonal array design, and through the results of the sensitivity analysis, the best combination on the welding pitch is determined. This study shows that as compared with the baseline design, the sub-frame redesigned by the proposed technique improves the fatigue life about 7 percent while reducing the number of welding points about 19 percent.
The aim of this experiment is to establish the method that obtains symmetrically two nuggets in microresistance series spot welding. The sheets of austenite stainless steel STS304 applied to various electronic parts were experimented by the inverter welding power source of polarity controllable type and by the twin head for left and right electrode force to be controlled separately. The experimental results were obtained as follows : 1) When series spot welding was carried out by DC 1 pulse as welding current with same electrode force at left and right, the asymmetry of nuggets was resulted from the larger nugget of the (-) pole because of the Peltier effect. The dynamic resistance of weld spot at left and right was appeared differently according to the growth of nuggets. 2) When AC 1 cycle by welding power source of polarity controllable type was applied, the nuggets were almost symmetrically formed. 3) In a twin head, if the electrode force of (-) pole was larger than that of (+) pole, the diameters of two nuggets became to same. It was confirmed that the dynamic resistance of (-) pole was decreased to the same level as it of (+) pole. 4) Although the forces of left and right electrode were same, and only DC 1 pulse was applied, symmetric nuggets were obtained if the conductivity of (+) pole was lower than it of (-) pole.
In this study, an electric resistance-heated surface friction spot-welding process was proposed and tested for the spot-welding ability of copper and aluminum dissimilar metal sheets using electric resistance heating and surface friction heating. This process has welding variables, such as the current value, energizing cycles, rotational speed, and friction time. The current value and energizing cycle can affect the resistance heat, and the rotational speed of the rotating pin and friction time influence frictional heat generation. Resistance heating before friction heating has a preheating effect on the Cu-Al contact interface and a positive effect on preventing friction heat loss during the friction stage. However, because resistance preheating can soften the copper sheet and affect the contact stress and friction coefficient, it has difficulties that may adversely affect frictional heat generation. Therefore, the optimal combination of welding variables should be determined through simulations and experiments of the spot-welding process to determine the effects of electric resistance preheating on the suggested process. Through this procedure, it is known that the proposed spot-welding process can improve the welding quality during the spot welding of Cu-Al sheets.
Conventional fracture test of resistance spot weld had been performed without consideration of paint baking process in automobile manufacturing line. This study was aim to investigate the effect of paint baking on fracture mode and load carrying capacity in fracture test for resistance spot welded 780TRIP steels. With paint baking cycle after resistance spot welds, peel tests and microhardness were conducted on the as-welded and baked samples. Resistance spot welds in AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steels) are prone to display partial interfacial fractures during fracture test or vehicle crash. Baking cycle increased the load-carrying capacity of the resistance spot welded samples and improved the fracture appearance from partial to full button fracture for the L-type peel tests. Specially, the differences in fracture appearance are apparent when the nugget size of spot welds is small enough to produce the partial interfacial fracture. The comparison of macrohardness and microstructure between as-welded and baked samples showed that there are no large difference in change the fracture mode. However, the results of the instrumented indentation test suggested that fusion zone and HAZ of baked sample have less tensile and yield strength and proves that the tempering effects are applied and enhanced the resistance to fracture on welds with application of baking cycle.
Thermal fatigue life of the automobile exhaust manifold is directly affected by the restraint force according to the structure of exhaust system and bead shape of the welded joints. In the present study, the microstructural changes and precipitation behavior during thermal fatigue cycle of the 18wt% Cr ferritic stainless steel weld heat affected zone (HAZ) considering restraint stress were investigated. The simulation of weld HAZ and thermal fatigue test were carried out using a metal thermal cycle simulator under complete constraint force in the static jig. The change of the restraint stress on the weld HAZ was simulated by changing the shape of notch in the specimen considering the stress concentration factor. Thermal fatigue properties of the weld HAZ were deteriorated during cyclic heating and cooling in the temperature range of $200^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$ due to the decrease of Nb content in solid solution and coarsening of MX type precipitates, laves phase, $M_6C$ with coarsening of grain and softening of the matrix. As the restraint stress on the specimen increased, the thermal fatigue life was decreased by dynamic precipitation and rapid coarsening of the precipitates.
