Redistribution of residual stress and its effects during fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region in weldment are investigated. Tests are performed by using welded CCT specimens of structual rolling steel (SS400) and it makes fatigue crack propagate from tensile residual stress region. For this study tension-tension loading type is selected by external loading condition and magnetizing stress indicator is used correctly to measure redistribution of residual stress according to fatigue crack growth and number of loading cycles. From this result, it is proved that redistribution of residual stress is mainly consist of residual stress released by fatigue crack growth. When fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region residual stress are redistributed and it makes fatigue crack growth rate largely increase. Fatigue crack growth rate is low in case of redistributed residual stress compare with initial distributed residual stress.
Recent keywords of the heavy industries are large-scale structure and productivity. Especially, the sizes of the commercial vessels and the offshore structures have been gradually increased to deliver goods and explore or produce oil and natural gas in the Arctic. High heat input welding processes such as electro gas welding (EGW) have been widely used for welding thick steel plates with flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), especially in the shipbuilding industries. Because high heat input welding may cause the detrimental effects on the fracture toughness of the welded joint and the heat affected zone, it is essential to obtain the sufficient toughness of welded joint. There are well known that the fracture toughness like CTOD, CVN, and KIC were very important factors in order to secure the safety of the structures. Furthermore, the welding residual stress should be considered to estimate the unstable fracture in both EGW and FCAW. However, there are no references on the welding residual stress distribution of EGW and FCAW with thick steel plates. Therefore the welding residual stresses were very important elements to evaluate the safety of the welded structure. Based on the measurement results, the characteristics of residual stress distribution through thickness were compared between one-pass electron gas welding and multi-pass flux-cored arc welding. The longitudinal residual stress in the multi-pass flux-cored arc welding is tensile through all thicknesses in the welding fusion zone. Meanwhile, longitudinal residual stress of EGW is tensile on both surfaces and compressive at the inside of the plate. The magnitude of residual stresses by electron gas welding is lower than that by flux-cored arc welding.

The problem of welding stresses and fatigue behavior is the main concerns of welding research fields. The residual stresses and distortion of structures by welding is exert negative effect on the safety of mechanical structures. That is, expansion of material by high temperature and distortion by cooling during welding process is caused of tensile and compressive residual stresses on welding material, and this residual stresses reduce fracture and fatigue strength of welding structures. The accurate prediction of residual stress and relaxation due to loading and post weld heat treatment of weld zone is very important to improve the quality of weldment. In this study, a finite element modeling technique is developed to simulate the relaxation of residual stresses due to loading and post weld heat treatment of weld zone. The accuracy of finite element models is evaluated based on experimental results and the results of the analytical solution.

Because welding residual stress is formidable result in electric resistance spot welding process, and it detrimentally affect to fatigue crack initiation and growth at nugget edge of spot welded la p joints, it should be considered in fatigue analysis. Thus, accurate prediction of residual stress is very important. In this study, nonlinear finite element analysis on welding residual stress generated in process of the spot welding was conducted, and their results were compared with experimental data measured by X-ray diffraction method. By using their results, the maximum principal stress considered welding residual stress at nugget edge of the spot welded lap joint subjected to tension-shear load was calculated by superposition method. And, the $\Delta$P- $N_f$ relations obtained through fatigue, tests on the IB-type spot welded lap joints was systematically rearranged with the maximum principal stress considered welding residual stress. From the results, it was found th2at fatigue strength of the IB-type spot welded lap joints could be systematically and more reasonably rearranged by the maximum principal stress($\sigma$1max-res considered welding residual stress at nugget edge of the spot welding point.

Since the pre flex beam is fabricated by welding, the precompressive stresses that should occur over the concrete pier are diminished by the welding residual stresses. Therefore the welding residual stresses must be relieved during the fabrication. So the analysis and examination of the accurate welding residual stress distribution characteristic are necessary. On this study, accurate distribution of welding residual stress of preflex beam is analyzed by finite element method.
Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. And it is well known that volume expansion due to phase transformation could influence in the case of welding of high tensile strength steels on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. In this study, we investigated the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress through experiment. And three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis is conducted to compare the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress in high strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) with analytical results which is not considering the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation. According to the results, the extents of welding residual stress relaxation due to phase transformation in the case of welding of POSTEN60, POSTEN80 are 0.85 $\sigma$/$\sigma$$\sub$Y0/, 0.75$\sigma$/$\sigma$$\sub$Y0/, respectively.

According to previous research, welding-induced residual stresses in steel structures can significantly affect the fatigue behaviour. Usually, high tensile residual stresses up to the yield strength are conservatively assumed at the weld toes. This conservative assumption can result in misleading fatigue assessments. Thee welding-induced residual stresses need be known in advance for a reliable fatigue assessment, which becomes possible to an increasing extent by numerical welding simulation. In this study, a fatigue Analysis technique for steel structures with welding induced residual stress is presented. First, We calculate the history of temperature according with welding process. Secondly, residual stress with a welding thermal history was evaluated by non-linear thermal stress analysis and lastly, fatigue strength is estimated with modified Goodman equation which can consider the effect of mean stress level.
A new reduction method of residual stress in welding joint is proposed where welded metals are shaken during welding. By an experiment using a small shaker, it can be shown that tensile residual stress near the bead is significantly reduced. Since tensile residual stress on the surface degrades fatigue strength for cumulative damage, the proposed method is effective to reduction of residual stress of welded joints. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by the response analysis using one mass model with nonlinear springs.
