In this paper, we present research experimental results about the different thickness T-joint welding of the high power continuous wave(CW) Nd:YAG laser for the secondary battery of a vehicle. Although the conventional method used for the secondary battery is a argon TIG welding, we utilize a laser welding to improve Tungsten Inert Gas(TIG) welding's weakness. The laser, which has a couple of advantage such as aspect ratio, low Heat Affected Zone(HAZ), good welding quality and fast productivity utilized in this work is a CW Nd:YAG laser. In order to observe laser welding sections, we used a optical microscope. Through the analysis of the metallographic, hardness, aspect ratio, and heat input, we obtained the desired data in condition of 1800 W laser beam power and 1.8 m/min and 2.0 m/min laser beam travel speeds. In order to compare electric resistances of the argon TIG welding and laser welding, we made an actual battery and the electric resistance of the laser welding is reduced by 40~45% comparing with the argon TIG welding.
This study deals with the development of an electrofusion welding machine that is capable of joining plastic pipes using a recently developed electrofusion fitting. This fitting has built-in conductive plastics that are used to weld the joint together as a heating element. In order to explain the mechanism of the new machine, 1) the resistance characteristics of the heating element were explained, 2) the method of electric welding that uses the electrofusion fitting was described, and 3) the method of power supply based on controlling the firing angle was explained. A control system for an intelligent electrofusion welding machine was proposed. This system has the ability to recognize the diameter of an electrofusion fitting using a lookup-table based on the difference of resistance curves according to fitting types, and it is able to weld the fittings regardless of the ambient temperature. A new algorithm was developed to control the power of electric welding through the recognition of feature points from the resistance curve of the heating element. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed welding machine, tests involving the welding of 16 mm- and 20 mm-type fittings were carried out. Examining the welding results, we concluded that the proposed welding machine will offer high productivity and reliability in the field of electrofusion welding.
The lightness of components required on marine and shipbuilding industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, fatigue failure phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology takes an important part on current industries. In this study, it is investigated about endurance and fatigue crack propagation rate of according to welding methods such as SMAW, FCAW and SAW commonly used for welding structures in present. Endurance limits carried out highly in the order of SMAW, FCAW, SAW and fatigue crack propagation rate out lowly in the order of SMAW, FCAW, SAW. By these results, it is needed to use SMAW welding method for welding structures with small welding capacity and FCAW, SAW methods for large welding structures after consideration about economic gains and operation efficiency of welding. Fatigue crack propagation rate is more affected by strength of welding materials than endurance limit of welding materials according to welding methods.
Since the 1990's, European shipbuilding industries introduced hybrid welding process in order to decrease thermal distortion of welded joints in passenger shipbuilding. In this study, we investigated effects of hybrid welding parameters on the toughness of weld metal using DH36 steel in order to obtain more sound welds in passenger shipbuilding. Type of leading process, joint gap distance and chemical composition of consumables were considerably correlated with the toughness of weld metal. Especially, the toughness was considerably increased with high-Ti containing consumables. In addition, hybrid welding speed increased by using plasma cut edges, the oxides layer of which increased absorption efficiency of laser beam.
Bulk metallic glasses(BMG) with good mechanical properties have problems that engineering application fields have been limited because of limitation of the alloy size. In order to solving this problem, the friction welding of BMG has been tried using the superplastic-like deformation behavior under the supercooled liquid region. The apparatus for friction welding test was designed and constructed using pneumatic cylinder and gripper based on a conventional lathe. Friction welding have been tried to combination of same BMG alloy and crystalline alloys. The results of welding test were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, measurement of hardness and mechanical properties test. In order to obtain the optimized welding test conditions the temperature of friction interface was measured using Infrared thermal imager.
In manufacturing, process automation and parameter optimization are required in order to improve productivity. Especially in welding process, productivity and weldablity should be considered to determine the process parameter. In this paper, optimization methodology was proposed to determine the welding conditions using the objective function in terms of productivity and weldablity. In order to conduct this, welding experiments were carried out. Tensile test was performed to evaluate the weldability. Neural network model to estimate tensile strength using the laser power, welding speed, and wire feed rate was developed. Objective function was defined using the normalized tensile strength which represented the weldablilty and welding speed and wire feed rate which represented the productivity. The optimal welding parameters which maximized the objective function were determined.
In order to obtain desired arc welding performance, we already developed an arc welding robot system that enabled coordinated motions of dual arm robots. In this system one robot arm holds a welding target as a positioning device, and the other robot moves the welding torch. Concerning to such a dual arm robot system, the positioning accuracy of robots is one important problem, since nowadays conventional industrial robots unfortunately don't have enough absolute accuracy in position. In order to cope with this problem, our robot system employed teaching playback method, where absolute error are compensated by the operator's visual feedback. Due to this system, an ideal arc welding considering the posture of the welding target and the directions of the gravity has become possible. Another problem still remains, while we developed an original teaching method of the dual arm robots with coordinated motions. The problem is that manual teaching tasks are still tedious since they need fine movements with intensive attentions. Therefore, we developed a 3-dimensional vision guided robot control method for our welding robot system with coordinated motions. In this paper we show our 3-dimensional vision sensor to guide our arc welding robot system with coordinated motions. A sensing device is compactly designed and is mounted on the tip of the arc welding robot. The sensor detects the 3-dimensional shape of groove on the target work which needs to be weld. And the welding robot is controlled to trace the grooves with accuracy. The principle of the 3-dimensional measurement is depend on the slit-ray projection method. In order to realize a slit-ray projection method, two laser slit-ray projectors and one CCD TV camera are compactly mounted. Tactful image processing enabled 3-dimensional data processing without suffering from disturbance lights. The 3-dimensional information of the target groove is combined with the rough teaching data they are given by the operator in advance. Therefore, the teaching tasks are simplified
Aluminum alloy which is one of the light materials has been tried to apply to light weight vehicle body. In order to do that, welding technology is very important. In case of the aluminum laser welding, the strength of welded part is reduced due to porosity, underfill, and magnesium loss. To overcome these problems, laser welding of aluminum with filler wire was suggested. In this study, experiment about laser welding of AA5182 aluminum alloy with AA5356 filler wire was performed according to process parameters such as laser power, welding speed and wire feed rate. The tensile strength was measured to find the weldability of laser welding with filler wire. The models to estimate tensile strength were suggested using three regression models and one neural network model. For regression models, one was the multiple linear regression model, another was the second order polynomial regression model, and the other was the multiple nonlinear regression model. Neural network model with 2 hidden layers which had 5 and 3 nodes respectively was investigated to find the most suitable model for the system. Estimation performance was evaluated for each model using the average error rate. Among the three regression models, the second order polynomial regression model had the best estimation performance. For all models, neural network model has the best estimation performance.
This study was conducted to evaluate worker exposure to welding fume in automobile body shop and to evaluate metal components by type of welding. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Average concentrations of total welding fume without and with ventilation were $5.2mg/m^3$ and $2.49mg/m^3$, respectively. Thus, the average reduction rate of total fume by ventilation was 52.1 %. 2. The highest fume concentration was indicated at shielded arc welding, followed by $CO_2$ gas welding, argon arc welding, and spot welding in order of decreasing concentration. 3. Average respirable fume concentrations without and with ventilation were $2.97mg/m^3$ and $1.64mg/m^3$, respectively. 4. Further analysis of welding fume indicated that total fume consisted of $Fe_2O_3$, ZnO, Mn, Pb, and CuO, in order of decreasing amount. Combined effect of metals was below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)Threshold Limit Values (TLVs).
Lap joint welding conducts low carbon steel plates using a 2.0kW continuous wave Nd:YAG laser beam. The specimen is composed of thin plate of 20 sheets. Process Variables contain two controlled parameters of the laser power and the welding speed. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the lap welding, the welding quality of the cut section, stain-stress behavior, and the hardness of the welded part are investigated. The weld width difference between the top and the bottom because the welding speed is increased. The reason, cooling rate is decreased because of fast welding speed. When the heat input is higher, larger volume of the base metal will melt and the welding heat has longer time to conduct into the bottom from the top. The microstructure and tensile properties of the joints are investigated in order to analyze the effects of heat input on the quality of laser welded specimen. From the results of the investigation, We observe that welding quality is good for the laser power of 1800W, and laser welding speed from 1.8m/min to 2.2m/min.
