Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) was welded through a combination of a diode laser and CNC. Laser beam passed the transparent PC and was absorbed in an opaque ABS. Polymers were melted and welded by absorbed and conducted heat. Experiments were carried out by varying working distance from 44mm to 50mm for the focus spot diameter control, laser input power from 10W to 25W, and scanning speed from 100 to 400mm/min. The weld bead size and the specimen cross-section were analyzed, and tensile results were presented through the joint force measurement. With focus distance at 48mm, laser power with 20W, and welding speed at 300mm/min, experimental results showed the best welding quality which bead size was 3.75mm and the shear strength was $22.8N/mm^2$. Considering tensile strength of ABS is $43N/mm^2$, shear strength was sufficient to hold two materials. A single process was possible in CNC machining processes, surface processing, hole machining and welding. As a result, the process cycle time was reduced to 25%. Compared to a typical process, specimens were fabricated in a single process, with high precision. By combining two operations processes developed process gained 50% more efficiency.
In order to investigate the hot cracking phenomena of the Inconel 690 overlay welds, the hot cracking test(modified Varestraint test) was performed by varying augmented strain and welding speed in GTAW. A total of five kinds of specimens was used in the hot cracking test. The specimens used were two kinds of one layer specimens that were composed of just Inconel 690 deposited metal and three kinds of double layer specimens that were composed with as upper part of Inconel 690 weld metal and lower part of SA508 cl.3 or STS 309L. The main results are as fo11ows: In the welds composed of just Inconel 690, as the augmented strain was more increased and the welding speed was more decreased, the extent of cracking was more increased. And these cracks were mainly solidification cracks, and liquation cracks were also observed partially in HAZ. And hot cracking susceptibily of Inconel 690 welds by using filler metals containing Nb were higher than that of the welds with Nb free. The hot cracking susceptibility of Inconel 690 weld metal was increased with dilution of SA 508 cl.3 and STS 309L, and the influence of SA 508 cl.3 was higher than that of 575 309L. The results of calculation of $TSC\Delta$ and $TLC\Delta$ in Inconel 690 weld metal changed by dilution with base metal or neighboring welds were agreed well with the results of hot cracking test in this study. Therefore, it was expected that the hot cracking was considerably decreased or prevented by using proper welding conditions such as lower heat input, filler metals, base metal and neighboring welds.
During fabrication of deck house block in passenger ships, the problem of unexpected large deformation and distortion frequently occurs. In this case, line and spot heating method were widely used to correct the distortion of thin plate structure. Spot heating was especially used for the case under 5mm thickness. Few papers are available on the working conditions of spot heating method but only little information on deformation control. In this study, evaluation was carried out on the temperature distribution of spot heating methods using FEA and practical experiments for various heating time. IIn FEA, heat input model was established using Tsuji's double Gaussian heat input mode (Tsuji, I., 1988). This model was verified by comparing with experimental data. Also radial shrinkage and angular distortion due to spot heating were determined and compared with experimental results. Thermo elasto-plastic analysis was performed using commercial FE code, MSC/MARC. Radial shrinkage and angular distortion were measured using 3D measuring apparatus. Based on these results, simplified analysis model for deformation by spot heating was established.

This paper examines the characteristics of butt welding joint shrinkage for shipbuilding and marine structures main plate. The shrinkage strain of butt welding joint which is caused by the process of heat input and cooling, results in the difference between dimensions of the actual parent metal and the dimensions of design. This, in turn, leads to poor quality in the production of ship blocks and reworking through period of correction brings about impediment on improvement of productivity. Through experiments on butt welding joint's shrinkage strain on large structures main plate, the deformation of welding residual stress in the form of I, Y, V was obtained. In addition, the results of experiments indicate that there is limited range of shrinkage in the range of 1 ~ 2 mm in 11t ~ 21.5t thickness and the effect of heat transfer of weld appears to be limited within 1000mm based on one side of seam line so there was limited impact of weight of parent metal on the shrinkage. Finally, it has been learned that Shrinkage margin needs to be applied differently based on groove phenomenon in the design phase in order to minimize shrinkage.
In this study, the transient temperature distribution of welded zone was analyzed by Finite Element Method for the optimal design of weldment. This study was carried out for the steel plate 8mm thick, 100mm wide, 100mm long that butt weld. The weld was made with a heat input of 2,250 joule/cm(arc current : 180 amperes ; arc voltage :25 volts ; and arc travel steed : 0.28 cm/sec). In the analysis of temperature, cooling in the welded zone by the conduction between materal was almost completed at 600 sec when a unique temperature field was formed. after this, the material was gradually cooled by the heat transfer to the circumference. In the early phase the temperature in base metal zone is little changed. but after the rise in temperature the whole area is cooled gradually.
In order to clarify hot cracking phenomena occurred in Inconel 690 welds and it's prevention, in this study, the cracking behavior and the influence of welding variables on cracking in Inconel 690 overlay welds on Mn-Ni-Cr-Mo steel(SA 508 cl.3) for pressure vessel were investigated by using mock-up test. The main results are as follows: The cracks in Inconel 690 overlay welds were mainly generated near the start and the end part of welding beads adjacent to STS 309L welded outside of Inconel 690 welds. Most of the cracks showed typical solidification crack, and also it was assumed that there was possibility of liquation cracking in HAZ. The existence of Nb constituents or concentration of Nb was recognized on the fracture facets of the solidification cracks in the welds by SMAW. Therefore Nb was considered to be the main factor of the solidification cracking. As the weld heat input was more increased and the weld bead length was longer, the extent of cracking was more increased. Moreover the extent of cracking was considerably decreased by changing of welding sequence to the start and the end part of welds. Hot cracking in welds by GTAW was considerably decreased as compared with that of SMAW. And cracks were well generated in the Inconel 690 overlay welds adjacent to 575 309L welds. This means that the hot cracking susceptibility of Inconel 690 welds was largely varied by chemical components and/or compositions of filter metals, base metals and neighboring welds.
A study was made to examine the characteristics of base metal and stress relief cracking(SRC) of heat affected zone(HAZ) for HY-100 and Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steels. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulate the SRC/HAZ. The details of mechanical properties of base plate and SRC tested specimens were studied by impact test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The specimens were aged at $650^{\circ}C$ for HSLA-100 steel and at $660^{\circ}C$ for HY-100 steel and thermal cycled from $1350^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ with a cooling time of $\Delta$t_${800^{circ}C/500^{circ}C}$=21sec. corresponds to the heat input of 30kJ/cm. The thermal cycled specimens were stressed to a predetermined level of 248~600MPa and then reheated to the stress relief temperatures of $570~620^{\circ}C$. The time to failure$(t_f)$ at a given stress level was used as a measure of SRC susceptibility. The strength, elongation and impact toughness of base plate were greater in HSLA-100 steel than in HY-100 steel. The time to failure was decreased with increasing temperature and/or stress. HSLA-100 steel was more susceptible to stress relief cracking than HY-100 steel under same conditions. It is thought to be resulted from the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase by dynamic self diffusion of solute atoms. By the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase, the differential strengthening of grain interior relative to grain boundary may be greater in the Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steel than in HY-100 steel. Therefore, greater strain concentration at grain boundary of HSLA-100 steel results in the increased SRC susceptibility. The activation energies for SRC of HSLA-100 steel are 103.9kcal/mal for 387MPa and 87.6kcal/mol for 437MPa and that of HY-100 steel is 129.2kcal/mol for 437MPa.
Precipitation hardening nickel base alloys strengthened by intermetallic compounds are extensively used to manufacture on the components of the hot section of gas turbine engines. To ensure structural stability and maintenance of strength properties for a long time, nickel alloys are normally subjected to complex alloying with elements to form ${\gamma}'$(gamma prime). Such alloys have a limited weldability, are normally welded in high temperature. However, laser welding have a merit that applies in room temperature as easy control of welding parameter and heat input. In this study, $CO_2$ laser welding is applied on STS304 plate with good ductility and precipitation hardening nickel base alloy (GTD111DS) used blade material. Also, several welding parameters are applied on powder, power and travel speed. There are no cracks in Rene 80 and IN 625 powder when STS304 plate is used. But IN 625 powder has no cracks and Rene 80 have some cracks in welds with GTD111DS substrate. Adjusting of welding parameter is tried to apply Rene 80 having a good strength compare to IN 625. In the result of adjusted welding parameter, optimized welding parameters are set with low power, low feed rate and high welding speed. Tensile strength of GTD111DS substrate with Rene 80 powder is same and over than the one of base metal in room temp and high temp($760^{\circ}C$).
The Charpy impact toughness of the heat affected zone (HAZ) of electro gas welded 390 MPa yield strength grade steel, manufactured by a thermo mechanically controlled process, was investigated. The effects of added Nb on the toughness of the steel and the factors influencing scatter in toughness are discussed in the present work. It was observed that adding Nb to the steel led to the deterioration of HAZ toughness. The presence of soluble Nb in the HAZ increased its hardenability and resulted in a larger amount of low toughness bainitic microstructure. Microstructural observations in the notch root area revealed the significant role of different microstructures in the area. In the presence of a larger amount of bainitic microstructures, the HAZ exhibited a lower Charpy toughness with a larger scatter in toughness. A softened zone with a lower hardness than the base metal was formed in the HAZ. However, theoretical analysis revealed that the presence of the zone might not be a problem in a real welded joint because of the plastic restraint effect enforced by surrounding materials.
Hastelloy X in this study was applied in jet engine F-15 air fighter as shroud to isolate the engine from outer skin. After 15 years operation at elevated temperature the mechanical properties decreased gradually due to the precipitation of continues second phases in the grain boundaries and precipitated inside the grain. The crack happened at the edge of the shroud due to the thermal and mechanical stress from jet engine. Selective TEM analysis found that the grain boundaries consist of $M_{23}C_6$ carbide, $M_6$ Ccarbide and small percentage of sigma(${\sigma}$) phase. Furthermore, it was confirmed the nano size of ${\sigma}$ and miu (${\mu}$) phase inside the grain. In this study, it was investigated the microstructure of the degraded shroud component and HAZ of repair welded shroud. In the HAZ, it was observed the dissolution of the $M_{23}C_6$ carbides and smaller precipitates, the migration of the undissolved larger $M_{23}C_6$ carbide and $M_6$ Ccarbide. It is also observed the liquation due to the simply melt of the segregated precipitates in the grain boundaries. Interestingly, the segregated second phases which simply melt in the grain boundaries more easily happened at higher heat input welding condition. High temperature tensile test was done at $300^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$. It was obtained that the toughness of welded sample is lower compare to the non-welded sample. The solution heat treatment at $1170^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes was suggested to obtain a better mechanical properties of the shroud. The high cycle fatigue number of the repair welded shroud shows a much lower compare to the shroud. In addition, the high cycle fatigue number at room temperature after solution heat treatment was almost double compare to the before solution heat treatment under 420-500MPa stress amplitude. However, the high cycle fatigue number of repaired welded sample was shown a much lower compare to the non- welded shroud and solution treated shroud. One of the main reasons to decrease the tensile strength and the high cycle fatigue properties of the repair welded shroud is the formation of the liquid phase in HAZ.
