This study examined the welding residual stress and fracture toughness of 78mm thick steel electro gas welding (EGW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) welded joints by numerical analyses of the thermal elasto-plastic behavior and fracture toughness(KIC). The residual stress, fracture toughness characteristics and production mechanism on the welded joints were clarified. Moreover, the effects of the welding process (EGW and FCAW) on the welding residual stresses and fracture toughness of welded joints were evaluated. The results showed that the new welding process (EGW) appears to be an effective substitute for the existing welding process (FCAW) in a thick steel plate with high strength.
Due to the numerous environmental factors, cracks and corrosion are frequently occured especially in old steel bridge, which deteriorate the structural integrity; thus bring about the problems of structural safety of the steel bridge. Therefore, repair and reinforcement are required for the damaged structure. the replacement repair welding method is spotlighted for its brilliant features, i.e. it can be achieved without incurring traffic dislocation. the method cuts the damaged parts and replaces them with new steel plate by welding under live loads. However, the mechanical behavior of the welded joints under cyclic loads due to the traffic which passes along bridge is not clarified. In this paper, the fatigue strength of the replacement repair welded joints was investigated in order to improve reliability in the repair welded joints of old steel bridge.

Recently, steel structures have been increasing because of its brilliant features. In general, cracks and corrosion are produced due to the numerous environmental factors in steel structures. However, the validity of repair method for the damaged steel structures has not been fully verified because of its lack of safety and reliability after application. Moreover, repair method by welding inevitably involves cutting and welding processes and reliability for the safety during the processes has net been established yet. Therefore, this study carried out experiments on the fatigue strength of repair welded joints of old steel bridge to investigate the fatigue characteristics in the repair welded joints. Fatigue tests were conducted by 250kN capacity MIS with the frequency of 5Hz under amplitude loading. From the results, it is known that fatigue strength grade of the repair welded joints was satisfied with C grade which specification requires.
A series of fatigue tests have been performed on the non-load carrying fillet welded joints in order to quantitatively assess the fatigue characteristics due to the grindings and TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding treatments. From the results of fatigue tests, it has been shown that the fatigue strengths at $2{\times}106$ load cycles were improved in the case of the grinding sand TIG welding treatments, and we could know that it is satisfying fatigue strength prescribed in fatigue design standard in general. Besides, from the results of fracture mechanics approaches, the geometric shape correction factors were the most dominant factors in the initial fatigue crack growth, but as the fatigue crack develops, the finite plate correction factor were became the most dominant factor, and the fatigue life on non-load carrying fillet welded joints could be relatively exactly estimated by using the relations between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor obtained from finite element analysis and existing proposed formulae.
To investigate how the fabrication and repair of socket welded joints could be used to enhance fatigue resistance under vibration condition, experimental test data of installation conditions that potentially influence fatigue strength were analyzed with the S-N curve. It was found that the decreasing fatigue strength of stainless steel socket welded joints was attributed to the effect of high heat input of welding process. The effect of welding method, slip-on gap and radial-gap conditions on fatigue strength was insignificant. The test data of repair technique application, 2 × 1 leg length and of socket weld overlay, clearly showed higher fatigue strength but there was a limitation for higher stress region because of the weld toe crack.

In reinforced concrete structures, the joints of ordinary rebars are usually lap joints, which are bound by binding wires with rebars, and mechanical joints by couplers. In domestic design standards (concrete design code), welded lap joints are restricted for ordinary rebars, but overseas standards allow welded lap joints of ordinary rebars through pre-heating. This study investigated the domestic and international standards/criteria and evaluated the fracture strength by performing the tensile test on the lap welded joint of SD400 grade rebars, which is used the most in the construction sites. The weld length of the specimen for weld lap joints is based on the minimum weld length (8d) given in the KS standard (KS B ISO 17660-1). According to AWS D1.4, the preheating temperature was set to $150^{\circ}C$ for D19 and below, and $260^{\circ}C$ for D22 and above. In the test results, the tensile strength of rebars with welded lap joints exceeded the required strength (125% of the yield strength) according to the concrete design code. To analyze the effect of preheating, the tensile strength of the welded rebars after preheating was not significantly different from that of the welded rebars without preheating. The carbon equivalent content (Ceq) of the rebars used in the test was 0.45% or less. Under AWS D1.4, no preheating is required if the carbon equivalent is less than 0.45%. All specimens with a welded lap length of 8d failed by a bar fracture. The effect of preheating was confirmed to be insignificant due to the low carbon equivalent of the rebar.
The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of welded joints on the Zircaloy-4 resistance upset welding for HWR(Heavy Water reactor)fuel rods. To estimate the characteristics of welded joints, the various tests were performed on the test coupons systematically with a wide range of each welding parameters in terms of a tensile test, burst test, knoop hardness test and metallography. Major results obtained in this study are as follows: 1. The tube and machined with 120.deg. projection was the reliable weld joint design for the nuclear fuel rod end cap welding. 2. As the weld current and the amount of upset increased linearly with increasing welding main heat input, it could make an estimate of their variation in accordance with the phase shift control. 3. It was found that an increase in squeeze force has an effect on the upset contour of welded joint because the amount of upset were increased by the change of squeeze force.
Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structural material for the railroad cars and the commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet and plug type joint, it is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of gas welded joints. And also, the influence of the geometrical parameters of gas welded joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. the ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged in the ${\sigma}-N_f$ relation with the maximum stress at the edge of fillet welded joint.

In this study, fatigue strength of load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints were evaluated using a new method proposed by Yamada, for geometric or structural stress in welded joint, that is, one-millimeter stress below the surface in the direction corresponding to the expected crack path. Validity of the method is verified by analyzing fatigue test results for load-carrying cruciform welded specimens has different size of weld toe radius, leg length and plate thickness reported in literature. Structural stress concentration factor for 1mm below the surface was calculated by finite element analysis for each specimen respectively. When compared to the basic fatigue resistance curve offered by BS7608, the one-millimeter stress method shows conservative evaluation for load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints.
In this study, non-load-carrying fillet welded joints fabricated using EH grade-steel are evaluated with the structural stress approach. The thickness effect was investigated by a study on welded steel joints with thickness ranging from 25 to 80mm. As-welded joint for main plate thickness of 25 to 80mm, the fatigue strength is reduced gradually. On the other hand, in case of main plate thickness of 25 to 80mm, the structural stress concentration factor increases gradually. As a result, for structural stress approach, thickness effect is not required for correction. Based on these results, a new evaluation fillet welded joint for fatigue design purposes has been proposed FAT 125.
