In power generation systems a variety of structural components typically operate at high temperature and pressure. Therefore a life assessment methodology accounting for gradual creep fracture is increasingly needed for these components. The most critical defects in such structure are generally found in the form of semi-elliptical surface cracks in the welded tubular joints. Therefore the analysis of a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate or a shell is an important problem in engineering fracture mechanics. On this background, via shell/line-spring finite element analyses of such surface cracks in the welded T and L joints under various loadings, we investigate J-integral along the crack front We first develop T and L joints auto mesh generation program providing ABAQUS input file composed of shell/line-spring finite elements. We then further develop a T and L joints life assessment program based on the experimental creep crack growth law and auto mesh generation program in a graphical user interface format Finally the remaining life of T and L joints for various analytical parameters are assessed using the developed life assessment program.

The strain distribution on a welded aluminum alloy transition joint produced by a static tensile load has been measured using a moire method combined with photoelastic coating method. The test specimens were made of aluminum alloy 6061-T6 and 2014-T6 butt welded with ER-4043 filler metal, and were post welded heat treated (solid solution heat treatment 502.deg. C 70min.) and precipitated (artificial aging 171.deg. C 600min.) to cause an abrupt change of mechanical properties between the base metals and weld metal. The photoelastic epoxy rubber was cemented on the specimen grating which had been reproduced on the specimen surface by using an electropolishing. The measurements were compared with strains computed by Finite Element Analysis. The following results were abtained. (1) The maximum strain were distributed along the center line in the transverse directiion of the weld metal. (2) The strain gradient along the fusion line increased approaching the V-groove tip and the maximum value was observed at a quarter of width from the V-groove tip. (3) The moire method combined with photoelastic coating was proved very useful for real time strain measurement in the welded aluminum alloy transition joint.
A study on friction welding of carbon steel bar (SM45C) to chrome molybedenum steel bar(SCM4) is examined experimentally through tensile test, hardness test, microstructure test and fatigue test. so, this paper deals with optimizing the welding concitions and analyzing various mechanical properties about friction welds of SM45C to SCM4 steel bars. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) For friction welded joints of SM45C to SCM4 steel bars, the total upset(U)increases linearly with an increase of heating time ($t_{1}$) till 6s. 2) The determined optimum welding conditions are heating time ($t_{1}$)2s, upsetting time($t_{2}$), 3s, heating pressure($p_{1}$), 4kgf/$mm^{2}$(39.2MPa), upsetting pressure($p_{2}$, 8kgf/mm$^{2}$(78.4MPa) and rotating speed(N), 2, 000rpm when the total upset(U) is 3.4mm, resulting in a computed relationship between the joint tensile strength .sigma.$_{t}$ (kgf/mm$^{2}$and the total upset U(mm); .sigma.$_{t}$ =$0.21U^{3}$ - $3.38U^{2}$ +17.03U + 66.00 3) As the elongation is increased more and more, the fracture position becomes away from weld interface and the fractures are similar to those of SM45C. Fracture is taken place on SM45C side. 4) The weld interface of two dissimilar materials is mixed strongly, and the heat affected zone is about 2.0mm at SM45C while about 2.7 mm at SCM4 side. Therefore, the welded zone and heat affected zone are very narrow, comparing with those of the joints welded by the other welding methods. 5) The fatigue strengths at N=10$^{6}$ cycles of SM45C, SCM4 and friction welded joints are 23kgf/$mm^{2}$, 33kgf/$mm^{2}$(220.5 MPa), and 22.5kgf/$mm^{2}$(220.5MPa) respectively, and fracture at friction welded joint takes place at the side of SM45C. 6) The hardness of the friction weld interface is 3 times higher than that of base metal. 7) Fatigue strength of friction welded joint is higher than that of base metal. 8) Notch sensitivity factor of friction welded joint is lower than that of base metal.
In the T-joint welding, the complete penetration joint which is obtained by groove welding with edge preparation is generally required thor the safety and reliability of structures but this way have the some defects such as increase of working time, consumed welding electrode quantity and large welding deformation. If there is no probrem, in the strength, T-joint welding without edge preparation will be profitably understood in the economical and welding deformation side. In this paper, we performed the finite element analysis to understand the characteristics of welding residual stresses on two models, complete penetration joint have the edge preparation and incomplete penetration joint without edge preparation, respectively. Especially, we observed the relation between welding residual stress distributed on the notch of gap in the root and external force in the incomplete penetration joint without edge preparation.

A study on friction welding of stainless steel bar(SUS431) to chrome molybdenum steel bar(SCM21) was accomplished experimentally through analysis for relations among friction welding conditions, tension test, hardness test, microstructure test and acoustic emission test. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1. Through friction welding of SUS431 bar to SCM21 bar, the optimum welding condition by considering on strength and toughness was found to be the range of heating time of 3-5 sec when the number of rotating speed of 2000rpm, heating pressure of 10kg/$mm^2$, and upsetting time of 4 sec. 2. Quantitative ralationship was identified between heating time($T_1$, sec) and tensile strength (${\sigma},\;kgf/mm^2$) of the friction welded joint and the relation equation is $\sigma$=52.62$T_1{^{0.06}}$. 3. Through AE test, quantitative relationship was confirmed between heating time($T_1$, sec) and total AE(N, counts) during welding, and the relation is computed as follows ; N=30413.6$e^{0.06T1}$. 4. It was confirmed that the quantitative ralationship exists between the tensile strength of the welded joints and AE cumulative counts. And the relation is computed as the following ; ${\sigma}$=16.37(ln N)- 116.4. 5. When ONZ=36500-41500 counts by $OT_1Z$=3~5sec, it was identified by experiment that the range of welded joint tensile strength is 55.6-57.7kgf/$mm^2$/ whose joint efficiency is more than 100%, and it was experimentally confirmed that the real-time nondestructive quality(strength) evaluation for the friction welded joints could be possible by acoustic emission technique.
This paper described the ultimate strength and deformation limit of welded T-joints in cold-formed square hollow sections. Previous studies showed that the strength of a T-joint still increases with increasing deformations at a ratio of branch width to chord width (${\beta}$) of below 0.8. Therefore, the strength at a certain deformation (chord flange indentation) limit can be regarded as the ultimate strength of a T-joint. The chord flange failure modes were investigated for the ratio of branch width to chord width (${\beta}$) and the ratio of chord width to chord web thickness (B/T). Experimental results including tests done by Kato proposed a deformation limit of 3%B for $16.7{\leq}B/T{\leq}41.6$ and $0.27{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}0.8$. The strength formula of CIDECT and other researchers were compared with the test results. Finally, the strength formula based on yield-line theory was proposed.

Submarine and deep sea diving structures are generally designed based on their ultimate strength. Fatigue strength at welded joint must be also taken into account because working stress is increased due to the increasing of diving depth and using high yield steel. The pressure hulls of submarine are subjected to fluctuating compressive loading. But in addition to the calculated stresses, high residual tensile stresses at welded part have to be considered. The state of stress level of pressure hull is tensile at surface and compressive at deep diving depth. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the crack initiation and growth at the weld toe of T welded joints of HY-100 steel plate under constant amplitude loading. It is also investigated the phenomenon of the fatigue failure and test methods. Fatigue tests have been using real scaled local structural models of full penetration T-welded joint, which is a part of the cylindrical shell structures reinforced by ring stiffeners. Several load ratios under constant amplitude loading are considered in the tests. Crack initiation and growth characteristics are examined based on the beach marks of the cracked section of the test specimens. A design stress-life curve including the design formula is suggested according to tested data.

T-joint and hopper knuckle joint models are typical welded joints in ship structure, which are very susceptible to fatigue damage under service condition. Fatigue test and fracture mechanical analysis were performed on these joints to find out characteristics of fatigue behavior. Unified S-N curve was developed from the test results of these two types of joint using hot spot stress concept, and also propagation life was also estimated using Paris' crack propagation law. Residual stress effect on propagation life was considered in calculating propagation life, as was done with thermo-elasto-plastic FE analysis and residual stress intensity factor calculation. Fatigue life of similar kinds of welded joint could be predicted with this unified S-N curve and fracture mechanical analysis technique.
As the industrial society develops rapidly, the weight reduction and high strength are gradually demanded. In case of the welded joint for the rolling stock which receives the repeated load, the fracture can be easily occurred. However, the durability and fatigue characteristics can be improved if the shot peening technique is applied. The optimal peening process should be applied to the metal surface because the over peening can lower the durability of parts. Thus, the fatigue characteristics and Fractography of welded A6061-T6 alloy for a rolling stock were studied in the paper. The optimal peening condition and Fractography were examined. The experimental result show that over peening can lower fatigue life caused by micro crack, fold and incrustation. The fatigue life of welded A6061-T6 was tremendously improved.
A study has been conducted for an optimal processing and an apparatus for manufacturing a laser welded tube for one-body formed bumper beam. The tube dimensions used in calculation were the thickness of 1.4 mm, the diameter of 105.4 mm and the length of 2000 mm. The tube was formed of a cold rolled high strength steel plate(tensile strength of 600 MPa). The two-roll bending method was the optimal tube forming process in comparison with the UO-bending method, the bending method on the press brake, the multi-step continuous roll-forming method and the 3-roll bending method. Monitoring of the welding quality was conducted and the seam tracking along the butt-joint lengthwise to the tube axis was also examined. The longitudinal butt-joint was welded by using a $CO_2$ laser welding machine equipped with a seam tracker and a plasma sensor. The $CO_2$ laser tube welding machine could be used for precise seam tracking and real-time monitoring of the welding quality. As a result, the developed laser welded tube could be used for a one-body formed automobile bumper beam.
