In recent automotive industry, vehicle weight can be reduced by one-step forming of tailored blanks welded with two or more sheets of metal blanks. Mash seam welding shows an overlap joint, a much wider welding area, and heat affected zone(HAZ) than a laser welding. This paper deals with the forming characteristics of mash seam welded tailored blanks. Mash seam welded blanks of same or different thickness combinations were prepared, and tensile, hardness, erichsen, and dome stretching tests were done.
The conventional SCC(stress corrosion cracking) test methods have much difficulty in evaluating the SCC behaviors of the localized zone like HAZ, bond line and weld metal because of the specimen size. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to develop the new SCC test method of the welded zone by evaluating the SCC susceptibility on parent metal and various microstructures of the welded zone by SP(small punch) test method using miniaturized small specimen and SSRT(slow strain rate test) method(SP-SSRT). Besides, this study is to verify the efficiency of the SP-SSRT results through AE(acoustic emission) test which is a useful technique to monitor the microfracture processes of the material. From the results of SCC susceptibility, SEM observation and AE test, it can be concluded that the SP-SSRT test using miniaturized small specimen(10mm*10mm*0.5mm) will be a good test method to evaluate the SCC susceptibility on the local zone such as the welded zone.
The paper shows properties such as vickers hardness, yielding and ultimate stresses for the weld zone of the butt and the lap jointed specimens, and compare maximum loads, stress-strain curves, deformation appearance after guided bending test and fracture appearance for butt and lap jointed specimens. The research in this experiment also shows the weldability of the butt joint specimen is better than that of the lap joint specimen using FSW with $2mm^{t}$ aluminum alloy sheet in milling machine.

Recently, smaller and lighter products have become of interest in industry applications that increasingly demand thin plate joints of thickness 1.0 mm or less using friction stir welding. In this study, high frequency spindles that run at 3,500-6,500 rpm are introduced for thin friction stir-welded plates. Weldability tests are performed for the butt-joint method of Al5052-H32 alloy of 1.0 mm thickness under 3,500-6,500 rpm spindle revolution with 250-400 mm/min feed speed. An optical microscope was used to analyze the bid structure of the welded zone and stir zone. The tensile-strength and hardness of the welded zone were then measured.

FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding), SAW(Submerged Arc Welding), EGW(Electro Gas Welding), and three-pole SAW are applicable in manufacturing the offshore wind tower. In this paper, mechanical properties of these welded-joints for TMCP steels were evaluated in all above welding processes. The tensile strength of welded-joints for all the welding methods satisfied the standard guideline (KS D 3515). No cracking on weldment was found after the bending test. Changes of weldedments hardness with welding processes were observed. In a weld HAZ (heat-affected zone), a softened HAZ-zone was formed with high heat input welding processes (SAW and EGW). However, the welded-joint fractures were found in the base metal for all cases and small decrease in welded-joint strength was caused by a softened zone. The multi-pole SAW welds exhibited similar mechanical properties comparing to the one with one-pole SAW process.
The Charpy impact toughness of the heat affected zone (HAZ) of electro gas welded 390 MPa yield strength grade steel, manufactured by a thermo mechanically controlled process, was investigated. The effects of added Nb on the toughness of the steel and the factors influencing scatter in toughness are discussed in the present work. It was observed that adding Nb to the steel led to the deterioration of HAZ toughness. The presence of soluble Nb in the HAZ increased its hardenability and resulted in a larger amount of low toughness bainitic microstructure. Microstructural observations in the notch root area revealed the significant role of different microstructures in the area. In the presence of a larger amount of bainitic microstructures, the HAZ exhibited a lower Charpy toughness with a larger scatter in toughness. A softened zone with a lower hardness than the base metal was formed in the HAZ. However, theoretical analysis revealed that the presence of the zone might not be a problem in a real welded joint because of the plastic restraint effect enforced by surrounding materials.
Juwangsan area($107.4km^2$) has been designated as the twelfth National Park in 1976, because it has magnificent aspect and seasonally spectacular landscapes. Juwang valley($9,177.5m^2$) has been designated as Noted Scenery No. 11 in 2003, because it has the same topographical landscape as rock domes, rock cliffs, caves, waterfalls and plunge pools. The most spectacular landscapes are exhibited in the densely welded zone of the Juwangsan Tuff. The rock cliffs generated from vertical joints in the densely welded zone, in which there are the same many rock cliffs as Geupsudae, Haksodae, Sinseondae, Mangwoldae, Giam and Byeongpungbawi, three caves such as Juwanggul, Mujanggul and Yeonhwagul in the cliff. The cliffs and caves are landscapes that were generated from vertical joints in the densely welded zone, and the rock domes and waterfalls are landscapes of erosional vertical joint planes in the zone. The vertical joints are columnar joints formed during cooling of the Juwangsan Tuff. Therefore the topographical features cause the cooling columnar joints that are vertically intersected in the densely welded zone of the Juwangsan Tuff.

In this paper, thermite and gas pressure weldings have been used to join rails in-track and analyzed as functions of hardness and wear characteristics. The wear rate of thermite welded rail is low compared with that of gas pressure welded rail, which is tested in a pin-on-disk wear tester. The hardness of thermite welded materials is relatively high and narrowly distributed between three zones; welded part, thermally affected zone, and base matrix. Wear of a welded rail may be a major factor in railroad maintenance costs and failures at the rail-rail huh joint.

Friction stir welding using aluminum alloys has been widely applied for transportation vehicles because of the light specific weight, which can be used to obtain sound joint and high mechanical properties. This study shows the effects of rotation speed, welding speed, welding load, and tool shape on defect formation with extruded AA6005, which is used for railway vehicle structures of non-uniform thickness welded by friction stir welding using load control systems. Optical microscopy observations and liquid penetrant testing of each FSW joint were carried out in order to observe defect formation. Two kinds of defects, that of probe wear and that of lack of penetration in the bottom of the welded zone, were observed. In the case of using a taper shaped tool, the defect free zone is very narrow, within 100 kgf; however, in case of using a cylindrical shape tool, the defect free zone is wider.
