  • Cruciform sections are an appropriate option for columns of orthogonal moment resisting frames for equal bending strength and stiffness about two main axes and the implementation is easier for continuity plates. These columns consist of two I-shaped sections, so that one of them is cut out in middle and two generated T-shaped sections be welded into I-shaped profile. Furthermore, in steel moment frames, unbalance moment at the beam-column connection leads to shear deformation in panel zone. Most of the obtained relations for panel zone strength derived from experimental and analytical results are on I-shaped columns with almost thin flanges. In this paper, a parametric study has been carried out using Finite Element Method (FEM) with effective parameters at the panel zone behavior. These parameters consist of column flange thickness, column web thickness, and thickness of continuity plates. Additionally, a mathematical model has been suggested to determine strength of cruciform column panel zone and has been shown its accuracy and efficiency.

  • Laser beam welding is more advantageous compared to conventional methods. Titanium/Aluminium dissimilar alloy thin sheet metals are difficult to weld due to large difference in melting point. The performance of the weldment depends upon interlayer formation and distribution of intermetallics. During welding, aluminium gets lost at the temperature below the melting point of titanium. Therefore, it is needed to improve a new metal joining techniques between these two alloys. The present work is carried for welding TI6AL4V and AA2024 alloy by using Nd:YAG Pulsed laser welding unit. The performance of the butt welded interlayer structures are discussed in detail using hardness test and SEM. Test results reveal that interlayer fracture is caused near aluminium side due to low strength at the weld joint.

  • This paper presents the experimental studies of the flexural behavior of steel-concrete composite beams. Herein, steel-concrete composite beams were constructed with a welded steel I section beam and concrete slab with different material strength. Four simply supported composite beams subjected to two-point concentrated loads were tested and compared to investigate the effect of high strength engineering materials on the overall flexural response, including failure modes, load deflection behavior, strain response and interface slip. The experimental results show that the moment capacity of composite beams has been improved effectively when high-strength steel and concrete are used. Comparisons of the ultimate flexural strength of beams tested are then made with the calculated results according to the methods specified in guideline Eurocode 4. The ultimate flexural strength based on current codes may be slightly unconservative for predicating the moment capacity of composite beams with high-strength steel or concrete.

  • Among welded structure bogies in use for high speed freight car, a part of bogies manufactured in 1999 and 2000 have found problems that crack occurs in its end beam. In case of a freight car the difference of weight between empty and loading conditions are worse than in case of a passenger car. Moreover its brake system is tread brake without second suspension system. Cracks of end beam is supposed to be due to loading by brake system rather than vertical loading by freight. These cracks can make brake system useless and may be a cause of derailment in the worst case. In this study, we have proposed a simple torsion-free brake shoe holder hanger to remove torsion of hanger bracket which was supposed to be one of causes of cracks and performed finite element analyses. Also static load test was applied in torsion free brake shoe holder.

  • In is well recognized that the ultrasonic method is one of the most common and reliable nondestructive testing(NDT) methods for the quantitative estimation of defects in welded structures. However, NDT techniques applying for adhesively bonded joints have not been clearly established yet. In this paper, the detection of interface crack by the ultrasonic method was applied for the measurement of interface crack length in the adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam(DCB). The optimum condition of transmission coefficients and experimental accuracy by the ultrasonic method in the adhesively bonded joints have been investigated. The experimental values are in good agreement with the computed results by boundary element method(BEM) and Riplings equation.

  • For the conventional welding method, the high heat transfer makes the crystallization of the work material unavoidable. Whereas the laser is able to weld the amorphous metal without a crystallized zone, because heat transfer is limited withn a very small restricted volume. In this paper, the possibilities and the limits of the laser welding in a deep frozen environment by liquid nitrogen were studied to utilize the advantageous properties of amorphous metal foils. The author investigated, after laser welding in a deep frozen environment with a solid state laser (Nd:YAG-laser), the achievable strengths and the influences of the laser beam parameters on the strengths.

The welding parameters which affect the weld nugget and the torque values have been also compared. The effect of the torque strength of end-plate welding using by the resistance welding and the laser beam welding has been studied and optimum conditions of Zircaloy-4 end-plate welding have been found. Futhermore, micro-structures and micro-hardness of the resistance welded specimens have been also compared.

  • Steel structural elements with web-tapered I cross section, are usually made of welded thin plates. Due to the nonrectangular shape of the element, thin web section may be obtained at the maximum cross section height. The buckling strength is directly influenced by lateral restraining, end support and initial imperfections. If no lateral restraints, or when they are not effective enough, the global behaviour of the members is characterized by the lateral torsional mode and interaction with sectional buckling modes may occur. Actual design codes do not provide a practical design approach for this kind of elements. The paper summarizes an experimental study performed by the authors on a relevant number of elements of this type. The purpose of the work was to evaluate the actual behaviour of the web tapered beam-columns when applying different types of lateral restraints and different web thickness.
