This paper proposes an integrated approach, which is independent of specimen geometry and loading type, for predicting the fatigue life of spot welded specimens. We first establish finite element models reflecting the actual specimen behaviors observed on the experimental load-deflection curves of 4 types of single spot welded specimens. Using finite element models elaborately established, we then evaluate fracture parameter J-integral to describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type on the fatigue life in a comprehensive manner. It is confirmed, however, that J-integral concept alone is insufficient to clearly explain the generalized relationship between load and fatigue life of spot welded specimens. On this ground, we introduce another effective parameter $J_e$ composed of $J_I$, $J_{II}$, $J_{III}$, which has been demonstrated here to more sharply define the relationship between load and fatigue life of 4 types of spot welded specimens. The crack surface displacement method is adopted for decomposition of J, and the mechanism of the mixed mode fracture is also discussed in detail as a motivation of using $J_e$.
Frame composed of concrete-filled steel tubular columns and I-shaped steel beam has been researched in order to development reasonable connection details. The present paper describes the results of an experimental program in four different connection details. The connection details considered include through-bolt between I-shaped steel beams and concrete-filled steel tubular columns and two details of welded connections. One of the welded connection details is stiffened by angles welded in the interior of the profile wall at the beam flange level. The specimens were tested in a cruciform loading arrangement with variable monotonic loading on the beams and constant compressive load on the column. For through-bolt details, the contribution of friction and bearing were investigated by embedding some of the bolts in the concrete. The results of the tests show that through-bolt connection details are very ductility and the bearing is not important to the behavior of these moment connections. The angles welded in the interior of the profile wall increase the strength and stiffness of the welded connection detail. In addition, the behavior curves of these connections are compared and some interesting conclusions are drawn. The results are summarized for the strength and stiffness of each connection.

In this paper, different evaluation methods of Hot Spot Stresses (HSS) have been applied to four different welded structure details in order to compare them and to illustrate their differences. The HSSs at failure-critical locations were calculated by means of a series of finite element analyses. There was good overall agreement between calculated and experimentally determined HSS on the critical locations. While different methods and procedures exist for the computation of the structural hot-spot stress at welded joints, the recommendations within the International Institute of Welding (IIW) guideline concerning the 'Hot Spot Stress' approach were found to give good reference stress approximations for fatigue-loaded welded joints. This paper recommends and suggests an appropriate finite element modeling and hot spot stress evaluation technique based on round-robin stress analyses and experimental results of several welded structure details.

This study is on the constant-current stress corrosion test, related to the load stress, in both the welded and non-welded zones of high tensile strength steel that is used for natural gas transmission. The surface corrosion pattern of the welded zone of API 5L-X65 specimens for natural gas transmission showed general corrosion and narrow pitting, and the pitting was increased with load stress. Initially, the average relative electrode potential and the average relative current of the high tensile strength steel, used for natural gas transmission specimens, were decreased rapidly, and the average relative electrode potential was higher and the average relative current was lower in welded zone, compared to base metal. The average relative electrode potential was decreased with load stress, and the average relative current was somewhat increased by increasing the load stress. The corrosion rate was less in welded zone, compared to base metal, and the corrosion rate was decreased by increasing the load stress.
This paper deals with investigating experimentally the effects of PWHT on the weld quality such as strength, toughness, hardness and micro-structure of the welded joints in friction welding of torsion bar material SUP9A bar to bar. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) It was certified that the condition of the post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) for the friction welded joints was very satisfactory because both strength and toughness of the joints were improved as almost same as those of the base metal or better by the PWHT. 2) The peak of hardness distribution of the friction welded joints can be eliminated by PWHT, resulting in being almost equalized at the weld interface, the HAZ(heat affected zone) and the base metal. 3) The micro-structure of the base meta., HAZ and weld interface(WI) of friction welded joints welded at the optimum welding condition consists of the same sorbite structure obtained by PWHT and fined sorbite at WI, resulting in increasing toughness as well as strength, and no micro structural defect has been found at the friction welded zone.

The effect of post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) of SCM440 steel was investigated with parameters such as micro-Vickers hardness, corrosion potential, polarization behaviors, galvanic current, Al anode generating current and Al anode weight loss, etc. Each hardness of three parts(HAZ, BM, WM) by PWHT is lower than each of as-welded parts. However, hardness of WM area was the highest among those three parts in case of both PWHT and as-welded. Corrosion potential of WM part was the highest among those three parts and WM area was also acted as cathode without regard to PWHT. The magnitude of corrosion potential difference among three parts by PWHT was larger than that of three parts of as-welded, and corrosion current by galvanic cell of these three parts by PWHT was also larger compared to as-welded. Therefore, it is suggested that corrosion resistance property of SCM440 steel is decreased by PWHT than as-welded. However, both Al anode generating current and anode weight loss were also increased by PWHT compared to as-welded when SCM400 steel is cathodically protected by Al anode.

Sheet or plate bending is one of the most important industrial metal forming processes. And considerable attention has been focused on gaining a better understanding of many of bending characteristics. One of defaults in bending process is the springback. In this study, the springback characteristics of tailor-welded strips in U-bending process was investigated. Furthermore, not only the relationships between the springback and the process variables such as the geometry of the tools and thickness combination of workpiece but also the heat effect which affects the springback due to welding process was experimentally considered. First, tailor-welded strips are joined by the laser welding process and consisted of two types of thickness combinations of the SCPI sheet, 0.8t${\times}$1.2t and 0.8${\times}$1.6t to investigate the effect of different thickness combination on the springback. Secondly, two different directionally welded strips, one was welded along the centerline of the strip-width and the other was along the centerline of strip-length, were adopted to compare the effects of the location of weld line on the springback. And three punch profile radii of 3, 9, and 15 m were used. Some cases of the experimental results were simulated by using a commercial FEM code, PAM-STAMP to compare the experimental results to the analytical ones.

According as the members and inner and outer plates of the automobile body structure have been thinned their thickness and have become high strength, each part of the body structure has been put more severe stress condition. Therefore, it has been increasingly required to improve the fatigue strength of the spot welded structures. As one of the improving methods for such problem, the author had previously proposed the method of alleviating stress concentration at nugget edge of the spot weld part and improving its fatigue strength [1]. But, because fatigue strength of the spot welded lap joint is influenced by its geometrical and mechanical factors, welding condition and etc., there needs a quantitative and systematic estimation method of them. In this report, by considering nugget edge of the spot weld part of the spot welded lap joint subjected to tensile load to the ligament crack, fatigue strength of various spot welded lap joints was estimated with the stress intensity factor (S.I.F.) K which is fracture mechanical parameter. It is known that evaluation of fatigue strength of the spot welded lap joint by the stress intensity factor (S.I.F.) K is more effective than the maximum stress $(\sigma_{ymax}$) at edge of the spot weld part on the center line of width of the plate.
The U-draw bending operation is known as a representative test method for springback evaluation of sheet metals since the sheet in U-draw bending operation undergoes stretching, bending and unbending deformations occurred at the stamping process. In this study, a simplified approach was proposed for predicting springback and side-wall curls of tailor-welded blank in U-draw bending operations, using moment-curvature relationships derived for sheets undergoing stretching, bending and unbending deformation. Two different welded strips were adopted to compare the effects of weld-line locations on the springback. One (type A) was welded along the centerline of the strip-width and the other (type B) was welded along the centerline of the strip-length. To investigate the effect of different thickness combination on the springback, the tailor-welded strips were joined by the laser welding process and consisted of three types of thickness combinations of sheets, SCP1 0.8t * SCP1 1.2t, SCP1 0.8t * SCP1 1.6t and SCP1 0.8t * TRIP 1.0t. Some calculated results by the simplified formula were compared with experimental results.
