Gas metal arc welding(GMAW) is regarded as one of the best candidate for welding automation in industrial joining application. It is important to monitor the weld quality for the high performance weld automation. In GMAW, weld quality is closely related to arc stability especially. In this paper, arc light signal is measured and spectrum analyzed to the detect the variation of the weld quality. The FFT of the signal showed that the amplitude variance of FFT power spectrum was very large in poor weld process such as the decrease of weld bead width and height. The results show that it is possible to detect the weld defect position in weld process.
The injection molding is used in more than 70% of total production of plastic products. Weld line in injection molded part is one of the defects in injection molding process. Weld line deteriorates not only appearance quality but also mechanical property. In this study weld quality has been examined according to the injection processing temperature, materials and mold designs. We selected four different materials such as PA, PP, ABS and PS as experimental materials. Weld quality increased as injection processing temperature increases. It was more dependent on materials flow ability. As a result, weld quality incase of rectangular core is better than circular core.
This paper presents an on-line quality monitoring and control method to obtain a uniform weld quality in gas metal arc welding (GMAW) processes. The geometrical parameters of the weld pool such as the top bead width and the penetration depth plus half back width are utilized to assess the integrity of the weld quality. Since a good quality weld is characterized by a relatively high depth-to-width ratio in its dimensions, the second geometrical parameter is regulated to a desired one. The monitoring variables are the surface temperatures measured at various points on the top surface of the weldment which are strongly related to the formation of the weld pool The relationship between the measured temperatures and the weld pool size is implemented on the multilayer perceptrons which are powerful for realization of complex mapping characteristics through training by samples. For on-line quality monitoring and control, it is prerequisite to estimate the weld pool sizes in the region of transient states. For this purpose, the time history of the surface temperatures is used as the input to the neural estimator. The control purpose is to obtain a uniform weld quality. In this research, the weld pool size is directly regulated to a desired one. The proposed controller is composed of a neural pool size estimator, a neural feedforward controller and a conventional feedback controller. The pool size estimator predicts the weld pool size under growing. The feedforward controller compensates for the nonlinear characteristics of the welding process. A series of simulation studies shows that the proposed control method improves the overall system response in the presence of changes in torch travel speed during GMA welding and guarantees the uniform weld quality.
Generally, though we use the vision sensor or arc sensor in welding process, it is difficult to define the welding parameters which can be applied to the weld quality control. Especially, the important Parameters is Arc Voltage, Welding Current, Welding Speed in arc welding process and they affect the decision of weld bead shape, the stability of welding process and the decision of weld quality. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the unique relationship between the weld bead geometry and the combination of various welding condition. Due to the various difficulties as mentioned, we intend to use Fuzzy Logic and Neural Network to solve these problems. Therefore, the combination of Fuzzy Logic and Neural network has an effect on removing the weld defects, improving the weld quality and turning the desired weld bead shape. Finally, this system can be used under what kind of welding recess adequately and help us make an estimate of the weld bead shape and remove the weld defects.
Positioning the workpiece accurately and preventing the weld distortion, tack welding is often performed before main welding in the construction of welded structures. The weld bead size of the tack weld is determined according to the workpiece thickness, weld length, weld joint type etc. However, this tack weld deteriorates the final weld bead profile, so that the grinding process is usually adopted for the uniform weld bead profile. In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the fillet weld which was done over the tack weld. This method uses the response surface analysis in which the leg length and the reinforcement height of weld bead were chosen as the quality variables of weld bead profile. The overall desirability function, which was combined desirability function for the two quality variables, was used as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. From the result, it was revealed that a uniform weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.
Weld bead shape is an important measure for evaluation of weld quality. Many welding parameters have influence on the weld bead shape. The quantitative relationship between welding parameters and bead shape, however, is not determined yet because of their high complexity and many unknown factors. Fuzzy expert system is an advanced expert system which uses fuzzy rules and approximate reasoning. It is a vert useful tool for welding technology because is can process rationally the uncertain and inexact information such as the welding information. In this paper, the empirical and the qualitative relationship between welding parameters and bead shape are analyzed and represented by fuzzy rules. They are converted to the quantitative relationship by use of approximate reasoning of fuzzy expert system. Weld bead shape is estimated from the welding parameters using fuzzy expert system. The result of comparison between measured values of weld bead by welding experiments and the estimates values by fuzzy expert system shows a good consistancy.

A new method of on-line monitoring of spot weld quality is proposed by analysing weld votage signal. Weld voltage signal has been modeled by autoregressive model which is suitable for on-line modeling scheme, and order of the model is determined by F-test. From the chosen model, strength. Upon experimental results, it has been shown that fundamental frequency dispersion of weld voltage can be used as a good parameter like maximum thermal expansion in on-line monitoring of spot weld quality. Microcomputer implementation of the proposed monitoring method is also developed and presented.
Edge welding of thin sheets is very difficult because of the fit-up problem and small weld area In laser welding, joint fit-up and penetration are critical for sound weld quality, which can be monitored by appropriate methods. Among the various monitoring systems, visual monitoring method is attractive because various kinds of weld pool information can be extracted directly. In this study, a vision sensor was adopted for the weld pool monitoring in pulsed Nd:YAG laser edge welding to monitor whether the penetration is enough and the joint fit-up is within the requirement. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser provides a series of periodic laser pulses, while the shape and brightness of the weld pool change temporally even in one pulse duration. The shutter-triggered and non-interlaced CCD camera was used to acquire a temporally changed weld pool image at the moment representing the weld status well. The information for quality monitoring can be extracted from the monitored weld pool image by an image processing algorithm. Weld pool image contains not only the information about the joint fit-up, but the penetration. The information about the joint fit-up can be extracted from the weld pool shape, and that about a penetration from the brightness. Weld pool parameters that represent the characteristics of the weld pool were selected based on the geometrical appearance and brightness profile. In order to achieve accurate prediction of the weld penetration, which is nonlinear model, neural network with the selected weld pool parameters was applied.
The interpretation of the reaction mechanism is significant to produce the high quality welds and understand the welding processes. This investigation is important for the design of welding consumables and the selection of welding process parameters to develop the high quality welds. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of electrochemical reactions on the transfer of alloy elements between slag and weld metal during submerged arc welding During submerged arc welding weld metal composition is shown to be controlled by two reaction mechanisms in four reaction zones. The responsible reaction mechanisms are thermochemical and electrochemical reactions. The possible reaction sites are the melted electrode tip, the detached droplet, the hot weld pool immediately below the moving electrode, and the cooling and solidifying weld pool behind the moving electrode. The possible reactions in submerged arc welding at different zones of the process is schematically shown in Figure 1.
The NDT using ultrasonic is largely divided into A-Scan and C-Scan methods. Since A-Scan method is subject to subjective judgement by trained personnel, C-Scan method has been introduced, which presents the weld area in two dimensions by placing the transducers two dimensionally used in the A-Scan method. Therefore, it is necessary to develop equipment that can provide weld quality without the help of a welding expert and the presentation of effective C-Scan images. Thus, in this paper, the algorithms that express a low resolution 2-dimensional gray image formed by C-Scan method as a high-resolution color C-Scan image and automatically determine the weld quality from the generated C-Scan color image. The high resolution color C-Scan images proposed in this paper allow the exact shape of the weld point to be expressed, and an objective algorithm to use this image to automatically determine weld quality.
